Hello everybody This may seem like an obvious choice but i really did try and find an alternative,i had to pick this game though.for a start it's prob over a year til i get to choose a game again. Anyway,my game of the week is Out run! This was the game that got me into video games and sms,i loved the arcade version and played it on the speccy and atari st as a child,it was only when i played it on a friends sms that made me want a sms,it was streets ahead of any other version and i asked for one the next christmas. Many of you have prob played it but if i get one person who hasn't to play it i'll be happy,it's pretty easy to complete so maybe you could post your best time or score (just for fun) Thanx for looking and i hope you like my choice, the best video game ever in my opinion

I have great memories of playing Out Run on the arcade machine, it was one of the original games they had in the 'Lagoon Leisure Centre' in Paisley where I used to go swimming a lot when I was a nipper! ;D Oh I used to love the sounds when I was going there with my family, the sliding doors to the entrance would open and the first thing you'd hear would be the music and fx from all of the arcade systems! I remember after finishing in the pool my brother and me would hurry to get dried and changed before our parents so that we could run through and play some of the games before we got dragged off home! More often than not, Outrun was one of the games we went for, I think because as you say, it wasn't so hard that your go would be over in 30 seconds! You actually got a good bit of play out of your 20p! Out Run was one of the first few games I picked up for the Master system back in the day, and later Out Run Europa. Both remained firm favourites of mine for many years. I agree that the Master system conversion of the game is actually pretty good, cerrtainly good for when it was released anyway. I'll stick it in the cart slot and give it a bash tomorrow I think!

Good man,the music and effects are cool,my fave tune is splash wave.i loved how you could select the music by turning the radio tuner, just like the arcade version.something that the 16 bit machine versions of that time didn't have

Really? I had no idea that the 16-bit versions didn't allow you to change the music via the radio! That's pretty bad! And I have to agree, the music from outrun is awesome.

Outrun on Amiga is a joke, as indeed were many of the arcade conversions for Amiga. I can't help but be a bit dissapointed with the sms version though, as I played Outrun Europa before it, and Outrun is pretty basic looking in comparison. Outrun 2 on xbox is the game I always wanted Outrun to be, looks stunning, perfect renditions of the classic tracks, and has the added bonus of drifting which really adds a whole extra dimension to the gameplay. My preferred way of playing Outrun on sms is the Japanese version with its FM tracks, 60hz speed and playing with the paddle controller - the handle controller might be even better, but I don't have one to try it with.

The FM music on this game is boss, but I have to say, load your guns, I've always preferred Rad Racer to this. I'm going to give it a go again, but there was something about the other that always drew me in. Chase HQ does more for me than this one.

Being able to choose your tunes and choose your paths, all with the comfort of your date in the front seat, is really what sets this game apart for me. It's all atmosphere, it's all cool. The fact that it's all from a pseudo 3D perspective really helps, too. This is definitely one of my favorite SMS games, and I think it's one of the most groundbreaking and unique games of its time. Great pick, and definitely one that's due. I've never played a game that's felt as effortless and suave as OutRun!

Great pick, a classic game no doubt. I think they did a pretty good job of the conversion from arcade to 8-bit. This game is reknowned for its fantastic music, it really is some of the best on the system (it got my vote for the SMS Awards). I love just slotting this one in and giving it a quick go every now then. The various routes and stages make this game different everytime you play and it's pretty challenging. The graphics are pretty good, I've always loved the Alps stage for some reason. No matter which route I take I make sure I go through that stage. Will give this a go and post a score later.

I also agree that this was a great translation from the arcade.
At the time this came out, you couldn't get better racing on a 8 bit system.
The graphics were amazing

Asa general rule, I don't like racing games. HOWEVER, I do have fond memories of playing outrun as a kid, not my favourite game, not on my top ten, but still fun to bust out and play every now and then
Good choice

Hmmm, my issues with this game:
1. Good music overall, I feel that it really fits the action and keeps me interested, especially in FM form. However, I find this game pretty damn lacking in the effects. Some better crash sounds, screeching or something would have made it awesome.
2. The controls are nice and responsive for the most part.
3. I hate how you go over hills and sometimes it moves to the left or right too quick and you end up hitting something.
4. This brings me to my major problem with it, there is like NO margin for error whatsoever. You can bump some of the cars a bit and still make it, but hit a tree or something once and you're done, you won't go any further. If this was late in the game, it makes sense. But the first damn lap? Give me a break, this is giving me a headache, I still can't get past the third lap because of crap like this. Playing for pure perfection is fine, but I expect that more towards the end of the game, not the start.

I never finished Shenmue II because I got stuck in the arcade playing Out Run... true story.
