I must spread ill will over this game wherever I go. The truth must be known.

At least agree the bonus level is bunk.

At least agree the bonus level is bunk. There's two - bonus levels, and Flying Dragon family jewels (on display in said levels). Perhaps these are the same family jewels Mick inherits in Ghost House? I can't agree that such SMS cross-title synchronicity is bunk. More like pure genius on the part of the game designers...

I like Space Harrier, but I agree that the Master System port is nearly impossible to play. The game really requires a system that supports scaling. I'll just stick with my 32X version.

I sort of agree with everything here. Spare Harrier is a huge favorite of mine, but I'd never have the dedication to ever mount a serious front at actually finishing it. It is damn hard. It's a singular experience though that even while many clones have been made in its template, no game has ever really emulated the feel of just running and hovering in this fast moving world. Whenever I play it on the 32X it is such a rush. I own it on the Saturn too, but that version is way too touchy - the 32X is the way to go.
I occasionally play through the Master System version, but like Stan & Co. say, it can get really tough to know just what the hell is going on with all those blocky renderings. Still, it's fun to see in the same way a drawing of the Mona Lisa by your nephew is, a downgraded relic with a personality of its own. Kudos to SEGA for bringing over a few of the sounds too - there's always something a little magical about hearing them in 8-bit. GET READY!
But yeah, has anyone ever finished it? I've gotten a fair ways through, I think past the second bonus round. That was when I really tried to master the game. After a few dozen attempts after that though, it was pretty clear that you had to dedicate a life's worth of effort into truly memorizing every twist and turn to finally rap it. Is there anyone that we can crown the Space Harrier king? Show yourself!

Hello. I'm new to the board, and found this thread only because I'm trying to beat Space Harrier right now.
I'm given myself one run through a day to try to beat this game. 4 times I made it to the level 17 boss, and twice I made it to the final boss. I think I could have beat the game last night if I had 2 lives left when I got to the final boss. Only having one did me in.
The only tip I can give so far is to always keep moving. The enemies shots at you are direct, so if you keep moving around, they will never hit you. Just concentrate on dodging the towers.
Good luck everyone. (Even though I see this is an old thread so noone may even be playing this now.)

Yeah, this game is a lot like Panzer Dragoon wherein if you move all the time no matter how nonsensically, you'll do okay. The game just gets way too fast and crazy for me near the end, it would be chaos for me to try and finish it. I commend you on getting so far though...keep at it, I'd love to see another person who completed this game legitimately!

I like the game, but it's definitely NOT one of my top ten. I could only finish it using the continue cheats...otherwise, I would not be able to even pass through half of the game.
Why?
Collision detection is horrible. Frames of animation was desperately needed.
And Space Harrier 3D is only worse, at least for me.
Love the music, though.

I beat it today. Had a real good run at it, with 5 guys in the bank going into the last board, and I still almost choked. I don't think I'll ever beat that game without using at least one continue. It gets way too ridiculous at the end.
The ending was pretty weak, but what can you do. The game is 22 years old after all. Maybe I'll try Space Harrier 3d next. But I remember not liking it the last time I Played it.......
