And now up to the task is RetroReserve. On occasion I've spoken with this god of SMS gaming, I swear to god I have. And now, here he is, willing to take some time out of his godly day to choose an SMS game for us to play. I mean, does it get any more religious than that? Come on, tell me. As for the game, I leave our man from the skies to tell us all about it.....

P.S. only messing, no letters please. No worries, I thought it was funny and yes I do need to get a copy of Alex Kidd in Miracle World. Now onto business... As you may or may not remember for the last Game of the Week I chose my first ever SMS game which was Ghost House. This week I will carry on in the same trend by making the second game I ever bought the Game of the Week. I can't remember how many years ago I got this now but I got it from an independent games store in Leeds for £29.99 as a birthday present and I have yet to complete it. Ladies and gentlemen the Game of the Week this week is............ CAPTAIN SILVERIn this game you play as Jim who must travel through 6 levels (or 4 in the cut down US version) over a wide range of environments on a quest to find Captain Silver's buried treasure. Despite the age of this game the graphics are quite good. There is a large variety of backdrops from towns to pirate ships and jungles which are very detailed and colourful. The sprites are also well drawn with the only drawback being very basic animation. The dragon at the end of level 4 is quite impressive too as it takes up most of the screen. The music is okay. None of the track really stand out in my mind but they do suit the pirate theme of the game quite well. Back when I first got this game I thought it was great and played it as often as I could. Nowadays although I have better games for the SMS I still find myself playing it occasionally and still enjoy it. I do have trouble getting past Top Banana though at the end of level 5. I think I have only been on level 6 once before and I am determined to complete it over the next few weeks. I know it sounds lame but I still find it quite hard. The difficuly level is quite high on some levels as I find that the restricted movement on level 3 is quite challenging and it can sometimes be frustrating. Especially since you lose all your power ups when you die. Overall I think this is a great game, if a little slow paced for an action platformer, but I don't think that it appeals to everyone. Let me know what you guys think over the next week. And now I must take care of other godly matters

shoot yerself - how can anyone with a beating heart fail to fall for the charms of Captain Silver? I really love this one, but alas, it is a particularly abusive relationship. This videogame is so bloody solid, sometimes I just plain break down and cry - the old continue cheat ( up + 1 at Game Over) is an absolute necessity if you want to get anywhere in it without memorising each level. I think the only way to properly beat the game is to always know what's gona happen next, and where to put yourself to avoid getting hit once. Frustrating is certainly too mild a word. But despite all that, it is fabulous[/b] - and another great choice for The GotW®. The music is fantastic, the overall presentation is perfect, and if you ask me, it's right up there with Monkey Island and Pirates Gold, me hearties ;D

Captain Silver definitely shows its arcade heritage with the difficulty it presents to the player. I used to dislike this game when I first got it in the late 80s but 10+ years eventually changed my view on it. It's a challenging, solid action game with good graphics & sound. Even the control is good once you adapt to it (it's very quick especially with power-ups). Check my review: www.geocities.com/sabulente/cs.htmlGreat choice for GOTW!!!

I have memories of this game. I remember when my neighbor brought it home when SMS games were starting to go on sale. We always wondered why the manual showed bosses that didn't exist and mentioned levels that we never went through. I found out much later the true horror. All should play the PAL version, or be a true ass and replace an NTSC cart in box with a PAL one, trading the other to some unknowing fool. Now I must play this game again, I love it.

Brilliant choice. This game is definately an obscure gem that often gets overlooked. I remember my nan buying it for me when I was younger and remeber it being so hard (I had the PAL version). I think I only ever got past the cyclops once. I come back to it now every now and then give it a bash. I still find it so hard and can't complete it, but I can get further than I previously did. That one-hit kill thing is a bizzle. Still, nice game, well presented and quite good fun. Once again, nice choice.

Once i figured out how to kill the cyclops and the banana king, the rest of the game was a breeze. (banana dude; Duck attack, retreat) They cut ALOT from the game for the US version. Here's a little info: www.digitpress.com/reviews/captainsilver.htm

eh, it's alright. Very unforgiving (and I'm franky rubbish at it), it walks the challeneging/frustrating line pretty closely but just about stays on the right side. Don't think I've ever seen past the cyclops either, but I've got the day off today so I'll try giving it a decent bash...

I strongly suggest anyone who picks this game up to play ONLY the PAL version as it just feels so much more "complete" than the NTSC lameness. I use the continue code frequent and you can use it as much as you want so I strongly suggest that too. The movements of your character are a bit awkward since he doesn't seem to move fast enough or jump far enough at times, but it's easy to get used to. I don't like his movements that much, they're kind of choppy, but overall I think the graphics are kind of unique, they really achieve this odd sort of Victorian, late 1800s pirate paradise or something, I don't know how else to say it. The dragon boss is awesome. I have yet to make it to the end though, I'll try tonight.
