The changing of the guard this time means the changing of the 'Retro...'s' as RetroReserve makes way for Retrobob to introduce the Week 10 selection...

OK, too late (again). We've got a board full of nervous gamers awaiting the next fix, so I guess it's time to dust off the Random Emergency GotW-a-matic (c) again OK, by the highly scientific method of spinning around in a chair 3 times and throwing a rubber dart at my wall of games, I'm pleased to announced that this week's emergency stand-in is... Speedball 2 !!The game that made the Bitmap Brothers a household name in Europe thanks to the original Amiga/ST version, it also recieved a fine SMS conversion by Mirrorsoft. I must admit that I've somewhat neglected the SMS version in favour of the Amiga & Mega Drive iterations, but what better time to make amends than the present? "Get Ready" indeed...

Really good game, slightly flawed but good. Tough too, I can win the second division no problems, but winning the first division eludes me, even after 14 years. It's all about the roster trading. Incidently, this is the game I was thinking of doing for my week. Boo to you, sir.

This is one of the best sports games I have ever played. The combination of the action and team management is really sweet and makes for great replay, though I have never been able to finish the 1st drivision either, but 2nd is a walk in the park!

Well.. another game I dont't have. I was bidding on Speedball one on eBay (I had never heard of the game at all until I saw that!) but was snaked by 50c. Am I right in saying that it's based on the game/movie 'Rollerball'??

I don't think so, but I can see why you'd think that. Speedball 2. Been a few days, but I've been meaning to give it a run. Hope it's as enjoyable as the first one.

I never really got into the whole speedball thing. I'll give it a proper go this week and see what all the hypes about.
does everyone else's speedball have a purple cart sticker?

Great choice! Best choice!
I am a really big fan of the original Speedball and finished it for my first time last year. Judging from the screenies of the SMS version of Speedball 2 it looks nearly as good as it's 16bit counterparts!
Boy I am looking forward to grab this game. Like another here in the forum I have also been outbidded on eBay a couple of times for this game.

Been very much enjoying this one over the last few days - considering how "16-bit" the Amiga original appeared at the time, this really is a stellar conversion - sure, the graphics are toned down a little and the sound can't compare, but this packs in everything else and the all-important handling is more-or-less spot-on. As always, the first division is a real step-up from the second - I generally avoid spending much in the gym, and instead save it for star players. It's vital to get a quality centre-forward as soon as possible, and you really need an almost-full squad of them for the 1st division - no matter how strong your team is, there's going to be casualties against the likes of Super Nashwan & Fatal Justice. Other vital gameplay tips include geting a x2 score multiplier as soon as possible (and keeping it), and not neglecting the bonus stars along the side - with the multiplier, it's possible to rack up more points here than it is by scoring goals. And grab as much cash as is humanly possible. I could go on for ages about this game - it's amongst my all time favourites, but I'll leave it there and go play it a bit more instead It's actually the only reason I want a CD32 - the version on there was THE finest incarnation of Speedball 2 (ignoring the sub-par PSX remake). psycho fox - yeah, all copies have purple labels, AFAIK.
