This week, rather than pick one of my favorite games I am going to pick the first game played and bought for the SMS. Way back when I bought my SMS I had a choice of either an SMS or a NES. It is this game that made me opt for the SMS after playing it in the games store for ages. If it weren't for this game I would probably not be posted in this SMS forum today.
The game in question is:
You play Mickey, a guy with huge elf ears and a massive quiff, as he explores Dracula's haunted house. In each level you must recover the five precious stones that are being held by 5 different vampires. To do this you must punch or stab the monsters until you find a key. Next you have to find a coffin and kill the vampire inside to retreive the stone. Once all five are found you must find the exit door. Then repeat for every level.
The game has very good graphics for it's age. The backgrounds are detailed and very colorful. The sprites are resonably animated and well drawn with minimum amounts of flicker or slow down when things get busy. The only let down is the way that only the sky and wall graphics change colour when you go to a new level. The music for an SMS game is quite good. Rather catchy without getting annoying too quick and the sound effects fit in well with the game too. That is except for the effect that plays when Mickey walks. A constant high pitched bleep that should have been left out of the game.
I think this game is great. It is fun and has a good learning curve so it starts off easy before getting tougher without ever becoming frustating. There is plenty of things to keep you busy in the game such as fighting monsters, dodging arrows and knives, learning where the warp doors lead and finding the hidden power ups (such as jumping on five arrows in a row to become invincible). One major flaw with the game I feel is that there doesn't seem to be much variety in the levels the further you get into the game so it can get boring if played for long amounts of time.
Overall it isn't one of the best games for the system but I would like to see what you all think about it. Being the first game I got the SMS it was a great introduction to the system and kept me occupied for many an afternoon.
Top 5 currently most wanted games: 1. Alex Kidd The Lost Stars 2. Alex Kidd in Miracle World 3. Hang On (Card in box) 4. Great Soccer Card 5. Sports Pad Football Also any complete Mark III games.
I quite like this game actually. It has a naieve charm and like you say, the graphics are pretty good for the time. I have it on card only and it was the first card game I ever played, so it has some nostagic appeal in that sense. I'll get gaming.
This was one of my first games also, and I love it. Back in the day I could never finsh the last level, but whipped it out the other day and finsihed it with ease. Still this game is a lot of fun, and has some cool little things to do, like getting knives and using the lights to freeze everything up! Good choice!
I gave this an hour or two last night and it plays really well. The animation when you kill the Draculas is pretty cool, crumbling into the ground with the skull out and all. Does anyone know whether the cart and card versions are different?
