It's that time of the week again, and PitPot has been retired to the GotW forum, leaving JellyCrystals to select the next candidate for appraisal.
Over to you!

ahh dez! As if I need more pressure! Mmm... fresh victims for my ever growing army of the undead.... Can you guess that this week I am reviewing.... Bram Stoker's Dracula - muhahaHAHAHahaha!! This is a little gem of a game I had never heard of until I got it in a "mixed bag" eBay special. Now I can't get enough. You are Jonathon Harker, on a mission through Count Dracula's lands and castle in search of your missus and on the way have to fight all manner of cursed ghouls, ghosties and screaming brides of Dracula. The creepy music is well suited to the eerie lighting of the game and the vampire theme is fits the tried and true platform format. Having hatchets and flaming brands at your disposal, they are excellent weapons and the range they have is not too far to be easy but not ridiculously short ranged either. The jump distance is also a decent length and the nasties are difficult to a point without being a walk in the forest. The life meter is great. None of this one-hit-and-you-are-dead business. And for those up for the challenge, you can tailor the difficulty and length of the game in the options menu. Al in all, a little cracker of a dark horse of a game. One of the best movie-to-game SMS adaptations. Oh, and no, the lead guy doesn't really look like Keanu Reeves... unless you really want him to

not bad, there´s a game i really enjoyed, i gotta admit it´s not my favorite of all time!! (i guess it isn´t yours either), but is a cool action game, where every aspect of the game is well taken care off.
... see, it´s cool!!! ;D (Carlito Caribean Cool)

Cool review. I noticed my local gamestation had it last time I was there; assuming it's still there, I'll buy it tomorrow.

I've been meaning to give this game a go. The NES version has probably the best 8-bit soundtrack of all time. Let's see what this one has to offer......

I tried the NES version based on your recommendation. To say it's "the best 8-bit soundtrack of all time" is a bit much. Jeroen Tel's done better (Cybernoid for C64, The Flash for SMS). The NES version does, however, win in the audio department against the SMS, though the SMS version seems to have more music (maybe) and that voice that says "Dracula" at the beginning. Graphically, the SMS wins. But otherwise, they don't seem that different from each other.

Well, I think it is. I can think of it right now. Love that song on the first level. Guess it's just me. At least admit the Silver Surfer's music is boss.

Actually, I've been playing this one on my SMS recently!
Cool game!
I've made it as far as the fire-ball spitting "dog" in the green castle in Normal mode (after the charging hell-hound boss). I need to give this some more play time, but I'm busy with a pet project of mine at the moment.

Well, I fooled around with this game last night. I really like this version. The music isn't that much below what the NES has to offer, the graphics are way better, your character doesn't turn around awkwardly (in the NES version, it's very odd, can't explain it), and, I noticed there are added bonuses that aren't present in the NES version. On the first level, once you get down into the bowels of evil, I noticed this room over to the right with this guy standing on top of a platform. I was like what in the world, I don't remember him. Thought you attack him but noticed that nothing was harming him so I went up and touched him and then he started walking back and forth. Reading the instructions, I see he is Dr. Van Helsing, and gives you a special weapon if you find him that is very powerful! Awesome! I thought that was really cool. I saw him again in the first part of the second round, but couldn't find a way to get to him. He's through this wall over to the right. It seems like you have to jump or you fall back down below, but every time I jump I hit my head on the ceiling. There doesn't seem to be a way to get over there. Anyone know?

Heh, I kept jumping after him at that spot Stan describes over and over... untill I realised that at the end of that stage, there's a block you stomp on that drops you down into the secret room

I only have this game for the Mega Drive. Are there some differences between the games? The MD version is nice, a nice platform game

I read a review somewhere that said the Gameboy, GameGear, and SMS versions were the same, the NES one was similar to the SMS/GG/GB (but not exactly the same), and hte Mehadrive/Genesis version was completely different.

Actually, I figured that out when I stuck the NES version in to see if I missed those rooms, which it turns out I did. Dr. Van Helsing IS in the NES version. Don't know why I didn't see him before.
