As surely as day follows night, Sunday evenings mean it's time for the current game to retire and for a new GotW to be crowned in it's place. CRV cast new light upon Batman Returns in his first pick last week, and it's another debut choice now, this time from SaDistic...
Take it away!

And he's posted in two seperate threads today, but still nothing here...
If there's nothing by tomorrow morning I'll unleash a Random Emergency GOTW Choice to tide us over.

cannot upset the holy order.
when should we crack the glass on the emergency Game®? I mean, just panicking is no good at a time like this, we need to try and stay cool. Focus.

OK - still no sign of SaDistic, so I guess it's time to hit the Emergency Random GOTW button... *cue much grinding of gears* ... ... OK, this week's fill-in is to be... DESERT STRIKEBack in the mists of time, EA , believe it or not, were once a by-word for original and interesting games, and the Strike series was one of their last great hits before they realised the potential in just re-releasing the same-but-slightly-tweaked games every year. Debuting on the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991, it was an immediate success was promptly ported to a host of other platforms, including the Master System. To be quite honest, it's a while since I played the SMS version and I can't really remember how faithful it is to the original, but that's the nature of an Emergency Random GOTW. I'll have to dig it out tonight and take another look... (fear not folks, normal service shall be resumed next Sunday )

It was a decent port, the only significant difference I think is the graphics (no dunes in the desert, smaller sprites etc) while everything else remains. By itself it's a good game, the controls make good use of just the two buttons and the difficulty level is commendably high, forcing you to check the map, plan your moves and think ahead if any amount of progress is to be made. The lack of much music in the game can be a downside to it all, but I remember that just adding to the sense that you're out there in the desert alone and survival won't be easy.
