Well I'm here at last, slightly hung-over; just realising it was my turn this week, sorry guys!
Anyway my game of the week is.............
Battle Out Run which in my opinion beats the over Out Run games hands down. You play a bounty hunter in your trusty red Porsche, travelling all over the good ol' US Of A in order to catch various criminals.
No doubt this is inspired by Chase H.Q, but peeps BOR is faster and hell of a lot more fun to play. Anybody found the sms conversion of Chase H.Q a little dull? The graphics were very average and the music did little to make it anymore exciting.
With BOR however the music is very cool. You get a choice of four groovy, adrenaline pumping, heart stomping, foot tapping tunes, which all adds to the thrill of the chase. The graphics aren't exactly pushing the MS to the limit and the scrolling is a little flickery, but it's the gameplay that counts and Battle Out Run delivers this in abundance.
If playing for the first time, it immediately hits you the game isn't particularly easy (unlike many MS titles). Firstly this game is fast so it might take you sometime to get used to the controls. You've also got numerous computer vehicles to avoid, as well as oil spills and hay stacks. The computer cars can be annoying at times, constantly moving from left to right and it's often necessary to go onto the gravel to avoid them. However you usually end up hitting a road sign as a result which costs you time.
A great feature of this game unlike Chase HQ is the option to upgrade your car, you do this by driving into a moving truck, you know like in Knight Rider! Inside you can buy various goodies, such as a new engine, tyres, body and the all important nitro's. It all costs money though, to earn money you travel from city to city and try to stop the bad guy by smashing up their car in the quickest amount of time.
The levels obviously become more difficult, so you need to spend your money wisely or you may not have the speed or ramming ability later on.
Doing the same thing for 9 levels may sound a little dull, but it's unbelievable how addictive games like these can be. You know when the time just runs out and you only needed to whack the bad guys car once more to complete the level. It's that "I'll just have one more go" scenario.
Battle Out Run won't win any awards for originality, but if you want a fun game, which doesn't require much brain power and one you'll still be coming back to even after completion, you could do a lot worse than this cracker!
Highlight Of The Game: The excellent Mug Shots of each villain at the start of the level.
Shitelight Of The Game: Flickery background scrolling
Overall
Graphics: 7 Sound: 9 Playability:9 Life Span: 8

Sorry I meant the "other Out Run games" in my review and the word which we all know as being brown and smelly was changed to say nutse but you knew that anyway.
Bear in mind I'm still very drunk after my session in the pub, I just hope I didn't pick Super Tennis as my fav game.....

the game's OK, but the criminal portraits are awful.

Well it all boils down to personal opinion, I don't really rate Smurfs 2 or Double Hawk but thankfully everybody's different.
I mean the purpose of this thread is not to name Alex Kidd or Castle Of Illusion which everybody knows as being classics, but to put forward lesser known titles which people often overlook.
I mean if you give most games a chance, you will usually get some sort of enjoyment out of them. I actually got to like BTTF 2, well just a little...

Battle outrun is a great game , before road rash came along it was the only driving game i liked. the car upgrades are what i liked the best, i wasnt a fan of chase hq though - i have no idea why (although i did enjoy SCI strangly enough) the game is not without its trouble. i think it can be very difficult to dodge traffic on the road, the cars that are goin in the same direction as youself seem to ram into you at 100mph, trying their hardest to hit you. The music as you said phil, is good, i like

I've just blasted all the way through it tonight, and found it pretty enjoyable once I'd got used to the handling. The ultra-cheap computer cars were extremely frustrating at first, but things got much better with a couple of car upgrades and a nitro, and in no time I was weaving a dodging like a pro. It's certainly streets ahead of SMS Chase HQ. Great music, as others have said, although the sound effects were a little duff. I found it pretty easy sailing until Stage 7, where it got little harder. I needed 2 continues to finish it, though could probably improve on that if I get the chance to try again. Couple of minor quibbles - infinite continues again, combined with the fact that it was possible to pick a starting level upto Stage 8 (of 9) doesn't leave a huge amount of challenge or replay value. Good, but I wouldn't put it in the same league as the original OutRun. And why has the Stage 3 boss got sea-shells hanging from his ears?

I no longer own this game, it's one of many I stupidly got rid of when the Nintendo 64 came along, but this game stiff provided one memorable moment...
On my birthday in grade 6 we stayed up all night playing this game, like 8 hours straight of Battle Out Run, i never thought the game was great, but sleep deprivation and repeated exposure can change ones opinion. We never finished it in the night (We were all crap at it), but during the next day, still with no sleep, i sat down and played through it from start to finish.
Damn, now you've made me wanna track it down again!

And why has the Stage 3 boss got sea-shells hanging from his ears? First of all, he's a woman. Secondly, they're earrings.
