Hi there, Nik Thorpe at your service. 17 years old, and an argument at my favourite Sonic board left me in a rage about the perceived abundance of NES nostalgia online and a lack of such sites dealing with the Master System. I later found this perception to be true, but found this site on the way. I've been a loyal Sega fan since Sonic the Hedgehog burst onto the scene in 1991, at which point I was four years old and recovering from a nasty disease. As you can imagine, it was like nothing I'd seen before. The next year, my dad bought himself a Mega Drive, and my visits to his flat were the highlight of the week for a long time. I used to constantly pine over Mega Drives in store catalogues and also the Master System, but I thought at the time that Alex Kidd would be a boring character. However, playing it during the course of that year at a friend's house soon changed my mind. On my sixth birthday, December 23rd 1992, I opened my present and staring back at me was a shiny new Master System 2 with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in! The rest of the day was spent saying thank you to my mum, heh. The story gets better though: the next day I had the Christmas visit to see my dad, and the present I received? Sonic the Hedgehog! I was utterly thrilled, and although it wasn't quite what I was expecting (a straight port), I accepted it as a fantastic seperate Sonic adventure. Over the next few years I'd acquire many games, until summer 1997 when I received a Mega Drive. My MS playing habits subsided somewhat, compounded further by being given a Playstation for Christmas in 1998. I staunchly support Sega even now, and whilst my favourite system from their fold is the Dreamcast, the Master System will always have a very special place in my heart. I've got 85 Master System games, 2 MS2s (one with Alex Kidd, one with Sonic) and 2 light phasers. Currently, one of those Master Systems and about 14 of my games are currently with my younger cousin Charmaine, who needs a gaming fix too. I run both www.dreamcast-lives.tk and sonikteam.dyndns.org/nik/mastersystem, as well as being an admin at the Sonic Stuff Research Group (currently down due to bandwidth issues). I enjoy a good debate and am not afraid to air my views. Looking forward to some good discussion to come!

HI geishaboy here, I absolutly love the sms to bits, ive been playing them since before I could read, thats when alex kidd was the biggest title out. I dont actually own many games myself, I left them to my little brother who prefers the sms over his brand new playstation!
I live in new zealand in one of the larger cities. The sms was the one of the biggest consoles to come out in NZ ever. It was hugely popular, they even made a game! ("New Zealand story" I think it was called).
Anyway im glad I found this forum and I hope I can bring some good discussion to the place

Hi! I'm MaRkiSH, currently only 17 years of age and living in Perth, West Australia. You might remember that site I made but stopped updating ages ago. I might update it in the next 4 weeks, since I have a uni midsemester break. But then again I might just spend the whole break playing videogames.
On the 24th of October 1991, I awoke to see my older brother playing with his birthday present, a Sega Master System II. The game had a weird spaceship with wings flying around, and I distinctly remember him showing me how it grows legs when you go on the ground. That game, Fantasy Zone has been my favourite video game ever since. We got a whole bunch of Master System games after that; the first 3 Wonder Boy games, Asterix, Bank Panic, Ghost House... and so on. Some time later the Master System II seemed to stop working (it turned out just to be the AC adaptor if I recall), and I got a Nintendo 64 in 1997 and the Master System II went into the cupboard. I went to all sorts of Master System websites on the internet from 1996 onwards, so I never really forgot. I also downloaded many games to play on Massage (and later Meka), like Phantasy Star, which I hoped one day to own.
Fast forward to 1999, I'd moved to a place called Adelaide, which is a hole. I was in the car with my dad, and there was a Cash Converters on the side of the road, and I asked if we could go in. He said yes, and inside I found a Sega Master System I, which I'd only ever seen on the internet, never in the flesh. It was only $10 and I simply had to get it. I took it home and plugged it in and played Hang On for ages. Then I pulled out all our games, and my collecting of video games begun. Somehow despite being poor and a cheaparse, I managed to collect a fair few games. I now have at least 150 Master System games and a whole bunch of games for other consoles. I'm kinda sorta actively collecting, but I'm trying (and failing) to save my money. I still play video games quite regularly, though right now, Master System isn't nearly as high on the list as it should be.

Hello all ;D Shaun here. Some of you may know me from gamefaqs SMS boards (thats where I have seen markish, thanks for the info on the FM sound unit ). I wrote an FAQ about master system dual language games, it is in the gamefaqs SMS FAQ's section if anyone wants to check it out. Anyway, onto the SMS story. I have been an SMS owner since its first release in the US. I remember being the only kid on the block with one, everyone else had an NES. I owned an NES as well, but all of my time went into the SMS. So here I am, 25 now, and I finally own all of the US SMS titles, and about 30 games that were released in other countries. The most valued piece in my SMS collection is a Master System Super Compact Series Futbol. It was released in Brazil for the World Cup, and never released anywhere else, at anytime. It has a built in soccer game, and as all of you probably know, it is wireless like all the rest of the SMS super compact consoles. I have been told that it is the second rarest SMS console in the world, so I will be hanging on to it. Of course, I also own all the other stuff too, SMS I and II and another super compact system. Most of the accessories, but wouldnt mind more.

Respect. I'm transbot, from the north of England. I'm 22 and have pedigree when it comes to the sms - I've had the mark II power base since the age of nine, and though it's been through the wars incredibly it's still in perfect working order. I was looking for a cheap copy of Space Harrier (for the music as much as anything), and found this lovely little shrine. I see now that I'm not alone in believing there are lessons we can all learn from Kidd and his contemporaries...

To put a long story short: I was a Nintendo-only fan for the longest time. However, the cheapness that comes with age allowed me to buy a Genesis used a few years ago (2001?). One day, I happened upon Space Harrier II. I played the game, was taken in immediately. I knew I had to get Space Harrier I. And now, I have to get Space Harrier 3-D. ...And a working Master System, pending the nature o' replies to my Master Gear topic.

Hi I'm Alistair and I was born in '86 making me 18 now. I remember getting my Master System 2 for Chrismas one year after the Mega Drive had already been released, must have been about 92 I think. It came with Alex the Kidd built in and Sonic the Hedghog on cart. I got 2 games in the January Sale at What Everyone Wants, Tennis Ace and Assault City. I never had very many games at all. I got The Terminator from Currys sometime and I can remember saving up £12.99 to buy Streets of Rage from Argos. That was the last game I bought and shortly after I lost interest in the Master System as the games were becoming far less available.
I brought my MS out to play it occasionally and one time around 1999/2000 one of my sister's friend swapped some games with me for a while. I gave him Streets of Rage and Assault City for Moonwalker and Super Monaco GP. When we traded back he gave me Cyber Shinobi instead of Assault City claiming that it was mine. I never got it back, which was very dissapointing as I was so close to completing Assault City for the first time and I never liked Cyber Shinobi at all. Shortly after that my dog suddenly decided that my MS looked tasty. He chewed straight through one of the control pads next to the D-Pad and slightly cut the wire of the other. He also chewed the phono lead in half and, even worse, I found the Sonic the Hedehog cart - or what was left of it - in the back garden in a horrible state. That put an end to my Master System days... until last week.
A couple of my friends have bought a Snes recently which inspired me to take a look back at gaming history by trying out my master system again. I was surprised that both control pads still worked! I bought Golden Axe Warrior from ebay and have been playing that for a bit, and then just the other day I bought 5 more games including Phantasy Star, but they haven't arrived yet. I'm looking forward to getting a lot of enjoyment from my Master System now that games are so easily available on ebay. The Master System was my only console and it's the only one I need!

Hello my name is Phil and I'm 25. I don't know how many games I've got. I haven't 900, but I've got a few.
I first got a Sega Master System 2 in the summer of '93 with Sonic built in. I was amazed with the quality of the sound and graphics compared to my friends N E S. Well for someone who owned a spectrum it was a big step forward.
I soon added to my collection and would stand for ages in my local newsagents reading Sega Power, instead of buying it! By that time only a few game were mentioned, so I just looked to find the best buys.
I was gutted in the summer of '95 when I realized that Speedy Gonzales marked the end of new software.
But my enthusiasm soon picked up, cos at that time you could buy literally any MS game for about a tenner, so I went crazy, also picking up peripherals like the Light Phaser and Control Stick for £2.99 at Game.
January 1999 marked the last time I saw a new Master System game in the shops. Good old woolies was selling F1 Grand Prix for a whopping £29.99.
Did anyone buy it, Stan maybe??
Anyway 11 years later and I still love the MS, maybe not in the same way as I did as a kid, it was the best thing I could afford at the time, now it's more for nostalga....
