So Japan stopped getting Master System games after Bomber Raid in early '89, but of course there were many SMS games ported to Game Gear almost if not completely identically, so in a way Japan was still enjoying the SMS alongside many other countries via Game Gear, up to the mid '90s. I thought I'd publish a list of post-Bomber Raid SMS games that were ported to GG for Japan.
Roughly in order of release date, plus I've noted when I'm aware that the GG port differs a lot from the SMS: Columns(Oct. '90) Super Monaco GP G-Loc Dragon Crystal Psychic World Chase H.Q. Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse Rastan Putt & Putter(GG has completely different holes to SMS) The Lucky Dime Caper starring Donald Duck Sonic the Hedgehog Heavyweight Champ Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap Joe Montana Football Aerial Assault(different gameplay, music etc.) Olympic Gold: Barcelona '92 Ayrton Senna's Super Monaco GP II Smash T.V. Chuck Rock Batman Returns(slightly different levels and gameplay) Vampire: Master of Darkness AlienĀ³ Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Lemmings Wimbledon Championship Tennis Land of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse Tom and Jerry(has its own story, new level designs) Jurassic Park Ultimate Soccer Sonic the Hedgehog Chaos T2: Judgment Day Deep Duck Trouble Winter Olympics: Lillehammer '94 Buster Fight(SMS:Masters of Combat) Disney's Aladdin GP Rider(different graphics, gameplay etc.) FIFA International Soccer Zool The Incredible Crash Dummies The Lion King Ecco: The Tides of Time Legend of Illusion:Starring Mickey Mouse(eventually SMS ported to Brazil in '98) Baku Baku Animal(eventually SMS ported to Brazil in '98) Virtua Fighter Animation Sonic Blast(Dec. Aerial Assault is an entirely different game on GG. A couple of stages have the same background theme but the enemy waves, power ups, bosses and music are different. Although some of the music is lifted from Assault City, so there is a bit of SMS in there!
GP Rider is arguably a different game too, not just a graphical facelift. It contains a port of Super Hang On and gets its graphical style from that. Sure it has the grand prix mode, but without an AI opponent it's a different experience
