Hi fellow travellers!
I recently put my master system and games up for auction on eBay, whilst it was up I had a few messages from people who were eager to buy one game specifically, sonic 2. I was later told that it was a super rare variant, the yellow triangle on the top left indicated this, and then I found a picture of it on this website confirming its rarity.
What I need help with is pricing, as I want to get the best price possible for it obviously but I don't know where on earth to start as its so niche. I just don't really want to under sell myself as I am saving up for a wedding and need all the money I can, so if anyone knows how I can get an official value that would be most appreciated!
Thanks!

As it's such a rare game, it's impossible to give you a value as it's only worth what someone will pay on the day. As a loose guide you can expect a 3-figure sum for the game. The best way to achieve this is by taking lots of clear photos and advertise your auction on sites such as this one, SMS Power and RetroCollect. Start the auction at a low price and offer worldwide shipping to attract interest, then let it run its course - the game will find it's own value.

The last one to sell went to a member of this very forum via ebay for a price of just under £300 all in. You might get more, you might get less but as long as you let the right people know it's for sale (Posting a link to the auction on here would be a good idea) you should achieve a good price. It would also be a good idea to get verification of its authenticity (There are fakes about) by posting lots of pics on here so that we can ask questions and compare it to a known and verified copy.

There are two revisions of Sonic 2 regardless of the packaging, the easiest difference to check is do the level select to Gimmick Mountain, Act 1 - if there's a spring on the ground in the opening area, it's the revised version.
That might be the difference between the two carts you have there. The original version shipped in the standard sleeve design as well. At this point I don't think anyone's had the SMS2 variant from brand new but that sleeve design was definitely used in catalogues and store displays, the limited numbers around today are probably those display sleeves ending up as a replacement on a regular copy - so could be either original or revision depending on when that swap happened.

Top tip: the MPR number is unique to every variant, so as it’s the same these two games are identical. MPR-15159 is the earlier v0 variant. Also, the number starting 9242 means both games’ chips were manufactured in week 42 of 1992.
