Hi Everyone,
I am really enjoying playing on the Master System however the difficulty curve mixed with lack of game saves really reduces the replay value in my opinion. I have looked about for an Action Replay however all those available on ebay are extremely expensive. I cant see any for sale anywhere else and suspect that the ebay value is pretty much the standard for purchasing one of these. Currently they are between £130 and £200 which is a bit beyond my means. I know it is possible to use cheats on emulators and i really should be storing my wares and using emulators to play the games however I just love using the actual hardware, even down to the blowing of the cartridge to get it working.
Is there anywhere that sells this item at a more affordable price or are there any other solutions?
Also wondering if there are any EU dealers / shops that ship to the UK without costing an arm and a leg. (sorry slipped that other ask in there but at least allows me to check other options for this).
Please let me know if im missing a trick and there is another device / repro that i could be using.
Was playing Wonder Boy in Monster Land last night, got quite far, got killed and lost the will to go all the way back to the start.
Thank you

Never blow in the carts lol! Q-tip with rubbing alcohol is much better. With the action replay, you may have to just wait it, hope to get lucky and find one cheaper. May take some time. There is another option if you’re looking to save games. I also prefer the actual hardware over emulation but there is an everdrive. With that, you are still playing on the actual console with the actual controller. With that, you can do save states. I definitely prefer the actual carts, but i also have an everdrive in case i start a game and know i dont have enough time to finish it, or also if its a difficult game and save states helps considerably. Check out Krikzz for the everdrive.

That seems an option thanks, still quite expensive but i guess these things are really niche.

Hi I go lucky and found a sms action reply in a box full of music tapes in a charity shop for 50p. The everdrive allows you to put in action replay cheats in it. However they are very desirable on eBay.
If you can wait I suggest that you save a search on eBay for a action replay to be notified straight away when one turns up.
You could put a wanted ad on this forum.

Was playing Wonder Boy in Monster Land last night, got quite far, got killed and lost the will to go all the way back to the start. Your problem is indicative of today's culture: attention spans have reduced considerably as people get bored sooner and sooner due to the sheer number of options for entertainment. Back in the day, a few master system games was all the video game entertainment some people had and if they got bored with them because they found them too hard, they would go and do something else like play outside, read a book or do something creative like make something from card, paper or glue. Today, there are so many forms of electronic entertainment that if people get bored with one, they can find another one very quickly. I'm not trying to patronise you, but if you find that you want to stop playing the games after dying once, perhaps retro-gaming isn't for you. Games were hard in those days and it was common for many people to have to play the same levels over and over again in order to reach the difficult parts just once to get 30 seconds' worth of practice. You're not going to complete a game like Wonder Boy in Monster Land first time. Doing the early levels over and over again will get you practice for the harder, later levels. It took me at least twenty goes, considering the annoying last level. Many times, you'll make it to the last boss on games and use all your lives just finding out how to hurt him! I remember when I first completed Captain Silver years ago (a favourite of mine), the fifth boss (Top Banana) frustrated me for days and days just finding out how to hurt him and I had to do the early levels again and again. The 'lack of saves' does not impact the replayability of the games negatively at all. It makes the games a challenge rather than a chore where we just complete the games and move on to the next like a machine. Devices like Action Replays and Game Genies were niche items. The only kids that had them usually had rich parents - most kids did without them (at least that's what I experienced). If you're finding SMS or other retro-games difficult, I would suggest just playing them on an emulator and using save states.

Totally get you. Time is obviously a factor for most adults. Also having so many games compared to the days when a game purchase was a huge deal , birthdays and Christmas normally. I would love nothing more than to have the time to master some of these games and in that replay value to me for some is lower than others. I find i will always go back to certain games despite the difficulty in the hope of getting that bit further. Its obviously down to personal optinion. For me lack of saves (or even continues)definately makes some games less atractive. Ill try wonder boy again on an emultor.
Never played captain silver and had to google that title, looks fun (reminds me a bit of monkey islands graphics wise).
Just need to find that game that catches my addictive side, have to say that I keep going back to Fantasy Zone and Sagaia (what a hidden gem that game is), I am completly rubbish at them though so much practice required!
