Resurrecting this thread, as I'm interested in people's thoughts on this. Every so often we see a thread pop up with someone selling their collection, and indeed even some of the biggest collectors on this forum from the past who a decade or more ago I never would have imagined selling what they worked so hard to build, eventually did just that. So what about any of you? Is selling your collection something you see yourself doing? I don't think I'll ever be able to see myself parting with mine.

I have so many filings and god memory’s from that little plastic box of an console 😁 I still got my very fist original sms2 at home. The memory from that toy store back in around 91-92 , when I stood with alle my kids money and looked at that console I had dreamed off, and just about to spend my own money on. That’s a really really big thing for a boy at 7-8yeas at that time.

Old thread now, but sadly, it looks like most of the threads are old here these days! Just wanted to say I was one of those guys who sold off a lot of my collection about 13 years ago now. It wasn't an easy decision, but It's difficult for me to regret selling given I sold my collection for a deposit on my first home to start a family. I never sold everything, I mainly sold off the games that I thought would fetch a higher price at the time. I never thought at the time that games would hit the crazy prices they now routinely go for. What's surprised me are the prices of popular games like Master of Darkness, Alex Kidd, Golden Axe Warrior etc. These games were always reasonably expensive because they were good games, but now it's just crazy, and unfortunately it really does take the fun out of the hunt. As my life is a bit more settled now, and finally have a dedicated game/storage room I'm enjoying playing and collecting again with my son. We've dug out my old collection out of the plastic boxes in the attic and I've started buying up some games again, but there are some that I could never justify paying the kind of money that most eBay sellers are asking for. I guess I just wanted to say that just because you sell up and it looks like the end just now doesn't meant it's over forever. With the perspective of time and change of circumstances who knows where your interests could take you in the future.

I sold my full collection around 3.5 years ago and prices have rocketed since then so they must be light years away now from what you sold yours for. Having said that i now have around 160 games again and im still finding the odd bargain. For example i picked up asterix and the great rescue for £13 complete! Its a £50 game now so im made up with it. Patience is key, I wait and wait until I see something at the right price. Only todayI got sonic chaos for £8.50 with a cheeky best offer. Its a game that regularly hits £20 on ebay. I reckon ill get a full collection minus the big hitters within about 2 years.

I've noticed that, there's still fairly priced stuff out there if you're patient and willing to go looking for it. It's just resisting the temptation, and staying away from eBay that's the problem. Those aren't real prices on that site anymore.

Update: I sold a small part of my collection (which I regret) but have added more titles back in recent days.

I have never thought about selling my Master System collection seriously. I think I would miss it far too much. I have many other for other systems, games and all sorts of other stuff I would sell if I needed the money. Especially now my games room is relatively neat and tidy and a good space for gaming. I love being able to look around at my Master System collection while gaming. I have mixed feelings about the current crazy prices - on one hand it’s nice that all my games are now worth far more than I paid but does that really matter if I’m not going to be selling.. in fact it would be bette if prices were back to early/ mid 2000 then I could buy more

I’m considering taking a long hard look at what I have and deciding what stays and what goes. My collection is currently in a storage unit (moved it there before lockdown). Once I have got to a point where the games room to be’s floorboards are back in place and the room is decorated, I can start to see what space I have. My games room will also be an office during the week so has to accommodate the space that the desk/monitors take up. I reckon that by selling the less sentimental stuff there will be plenty of space for little white boxes alongside a few bits of Sony and 360/xb1.

I wonder how many other people's collection/gaming rooms are doubling-up as offices just now during the Pandemic. I'm the same situation, and although the room has always been a multi-purpose room, I never had a desk and load of work crap in there before taking up valuable gaming space 😂. It is fun to go on conference calls and have everyone ask about your collection. Also discovered another retro gamer at work via this!

I've never thought about selling my SMS collection, but I have considered reducing the size of other collections i have less interest in like the PS2. Space is quite literally the limiting factor and in my case that space is shared with other things like Lego.
The problem is when I have looked at sets to reduce I can never decide on what should go. I mentioned the PS2 as I've no nostalgia for that system, but at the same time there are a lot of recommended games for the system. Sure there are some throw away titles, such as the sports, but I don't have a lot of those so that won't make a big difference.

I absolutely loved the PS2 when it came out probably because my memories of receiving some of the games as gifts are a lot more recent and at a point where I was in my teens have stuck out to me. But I think as collecting goes it’s hard to try and have a small collection without getting drawn in to the completionist side and the PS2 library is massive! Personally I sold off some incredible stuff and got pittance of today’s value. I think to retrospectively look back with regret is easy but I remember at the time I parted ways with the unique, niche and odd items I was probably in a rut and struggling financially. But can’t help think I wish I still had them haha
