Is it possible to piece together a complete ntsc collection of sms games? How many members have accomplished this? I'm asking because my father collects baseball cards and he asked if I could complete a master system set, my favorite system as a young lad. I know it's difficult, but does anyone think it's possible?

I would say 'yes' but it's getting harder or at least costlier. I managed to complete my ntsc collection of 114 games in about two years. Granted I already had about 30 games from my childhood. I would say I even managed to get half of the set "free" by buying bigger bundles and lots and reselling the doubles individually. I guess technically I never had a "complete" set as my Golden Axe Warrior does not have the UPC sticker, but I did manage to a find Sonic UPC hidden in a bundle and Buster Douglas at a fair price. Adding in the rereleases will of course add considerable time and money.

I'm currently trying to complete the full NTSC set and am just 9 games short. It's taken me about 2 years to get to this point and I would estimate it will take another 6 months to complete the set (Patience and persistence are key). During the time I've been collecting (12 years in total), I've noticed a HUGE rise in prices for the Master System on all continents(I'm UK based) and things show no signs of slowing. I would guess that most of the good stuff is in the hands of the die hard collectors who just don't sell (Years ago, it seamed like every other month a collector would spill their load all over ebay but this is a very rare occurrence these days). It can be done but unless your lucky enough to be quite wealthy, it's gonna take time and lots of it!

First, decide what you're goal is. All the titles or all the games. There is a handful (11? 12?) that have re-release variants, and some of them are outrageously expensive. Also, there is 4 games, sonic, strider, spiderman, golden axe warrior that are considered by some to be US releases. I dont. They are imports that have US upc stickers on them, and those are pricey too. Some get them, some dont. I have all the titles, which is good for me. I have a few of the re-releases but theres others ill never spend the high amount of $$ on. My strider has a sticker and my golden axe warrior has half a sticker but i have no desire to break the bank for the sonic one. I have the game, no sticker, fine with it. I dont consider those US games.

I definitely hard to do right now with the prices. When i got the rare ones 5 years ago, i got 'buster douglas' for $200, one sold for $500 a few months ago. My power strike was $70, its $150 plus now. Making the bubble will burst and prices wil drop?

Hey~ I'm new here, but similar to another poster up above, I'm also somewhat close to completing the US NTSC set (just 8 games CIB + 2 manuals left to go) but honestly still pretty far away because at least 4 or 5 of the games that I'm missing seem to only pop up every few months even on eBay lately (Buster Douglas, the UPC games minus Golden Axe Warrior, and also King's Quest seems a lot more rare than I thought it was.) I agree that it seems like I will complete it eventually, but particularly for Buster Douglas and the UPC games I may need to be willing to overpay a bit if I don't want it to take forever. My advice if you're really serious about it is to always keep a look out for those, because they will take by far the longest to track down, and also to focus on rare games in general (Dick Tracy, Ghouls 'n Ghosts, and R.C. Grand Prix are a few I have that seem pretty rare in my experience and may go under new collectors' radar.) A lot of the expensive games that many people know about, like Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Alf, and Power Strike, really don't seem overly rare to me. I feel like I see those pop up quite frequently on eBay.

I would go by the UPC bar code, so the variants would not be included in a full set, but the US sticker games would have to be there for a complete set. I'd say a complete set of games would be worth 3000 or so, just the carts maybe half that price.

OP it is doable. Even in the US you have to be diligent and on the lookout for deals. It's getting tougher and tougher to find nice condition CIB games...at least in my area (which is actually quite large). Unfortunately a mint/CIB Buster Douglas set me back a few bucks...many years ago when I was able to locate one. Waiting for those last few to pop up may be your biggest constraint. I say go for it. Such a fantastic system.
