My first dilemma was whether to play with emulator something I've never played or to name a game from my rather limited "collection" so I'd have reason to dig out the real thing. I decided it would be more to the spirit of the club to choose the latter. Reason I ended up to Super Kick Off is that though I have played it annually (like almost all of my games), for at least a decade I've been stuck always using the same settings (full speed, soggy field and medium wind). And with those - and playing short games - I've too long had the bad habit of sticking to the simplest "sure goal" trick. Now I'll have excuse to try everything possible for change. For those not familiar with the game, let me point a detail: if you choose different language, the (club) team and player names are different. Depending where you're from, some of those may sound humorous. Beginners may want to start with 25%/50% speed (and soggy field with no wind). Personally I've always been sorry I never could gather a large group of people to play this with as you could play 8 player tournament/league switching the teams as needed. One thing for all of you to keep eye on that I've always wondered: which referees give easiest/most yellow and red cards? I recall Juhola didn't give cards easily (I remember that one because it's a Finnish name).

Awesome! This is not a game I'd have thought of playing but certainly one I had back in the day. Good shout.

Ha superb random choice! I grew up hearing about how Kick Off and Super Kick Off were the pinnacle of football games at the time. I haven't played it, so will be interesting if it can come close to the only retro football game I've ever enjoyed - Sensible Soccer. Maybe the experience of Italia '90 on my mate's Mega Drive was just too traumatic! Will have to give this a go on my day off next week

Interesting pick! It's good to see things mixed up a bit, I'm not sure we've had any sports games on Game Club before.
I'm a big football fan, so I'm down with Super Kick Off. It was a game I actually owned when I was younger but I wasn't much good at it. I had one guaranteed way of scoring so I would always win but nowadays I try to score a variety of goals. I'm not a huge fan of the top-down view on these older football games but this game plays a lot better than most of others on the system. Tecmo World Cup is easily the best footy game on the SMS but Super Kick Off is pretty fun. The wide variety of options and features give it good replayability.
I'm going to play a few games now and see how I get on.

Hmmm, so not quite as fun as I remembered. Slow down is pretty bad, lack of music is noticeable, passing is non-existant, winning posession is pot luck and defending is a nightmare, as control of your players only ever seem to switch after the opponent has already run past them! The gameplay is basic really and the controls are frustrating. I gave it a go but I think I'll go back to Wonder Boy.

I have never played the sms version , I actually just bought this for the megadrive last week , put many hours into the megadrive version , mostly because you could edit player names , appearance and the kits . It was clever from developers as they didn't have to pay to use naming rights , just let the customer add their favourite players .
Was planing to play the megadrive version over the weekend so I will pop this on while I'm at it . Only played world cup 90 as a kid , played that to death , will be interesting to see how they compare .
Their was a thread a while back and someone had posted all the scores from the magazine reviews and I think super kick off actually had the best score , 96% or something crazy like that so I'm expecting good things .

A Finnish brochure mentions Mean Machines gave it 96%. I've been quickly reminded why I've played SKO with the soggy field option. Ball gets real fast/slippery on the others. Edit: I just found that Mean Machines review

Edit: I just found that Mean Machines reviewThis made me think, and I've found a review in my much loved: Mean Machines - The essential Sega guide. I used to love this game as a kid but have to confess to not playing it for a while. Remember having lots of discussions back in the day about whether this or sensible soccer was better. Fond memories. Am a little behind with he game club, still need to give the Wonder boy game a decent outing yet, but will hopefully get around to that and dusting this off in the next couple of weeks.

A Finnish brochure mentions Mean Machines gave it 96%. Mean Machines was crazy like that. I really wanna know what stuff they smoked when they came up with their "reviews" and ratings I always disliked Kick Off and never understood it's popularity (or that of Micrprose Soccer which has the same "too fast" & "ball jumps and flies around with no control at all" gameplay). I mean what happens there doesn't even resemble proper, real football, it's more like a bunch of super excited ants running around a small paper ball trying to move it around. Sensible Soccer was probably the first football that got everything right. Anyway, even now after trying it again and giving it yet another chance, i still don't like it. Also is it just me or is the music in the menu totally ill-fitting for a football game? It sounds more like it belongs into Land of Illusion or some other cutesy platformer.

Okay i tried this but i found it awful, maybe its one of those games you had to have played as a kid to appreciate it now?
I loved world soccer and i think that certainly fits into that category.

Sports games really seem to be about what you first get used to. I've always disliked NHL games due Slap Shot being one of my first games (and still a great favorite).
Also, being used to the SKO music, I've never found it that bad or unfitting. I associate it with Italy and Italian football - either because it kind of sounds like sped up Italian anthem or because I got the game couple years after World Cup in Italy.

I played this for the first time last night and I just can't get the hang of it. The control seems all over the place, and the graphics and sound are pretty poor too. I had World Soccer as a kid and latterly played Sensible Soccer, I think both are superior to this. I endured a couple of matches on this but don't think I'll be returning to it.

Sport games aren't really my interest but have given it ago, sadly it's not for me - it seems slow and I have no idea what I am doing! Nice to experience a new game and genre that I wouldn't normally try. I have played FIFA on PS4 before and still not sure what the buttons do, so I don't think I stood much chance on the SMS. Thanks for picking it though

Slow? The common complaint about Kick Off is that it's too fast in combination with the controls being too difficult and not a lot of fun - unless you turned the speed down, then it's just slow and still kinda uncontrollable. Dino Dini really made the whole thing work with Goal! where you can press the pass button which automatically holds the ball to the player, you aim into a direction, pass and with some timing can do some nice tricks. It was Kick Off done right but came after Sensible Soccer which by then already revolutionized the market (and then came ISS on the SNES and Super Sidekicks 2 - the only two old football games i still love (ISS Deluxe in the first case)
