Hey guys, so after spending too much time on here, ebay and elsewhere, I've started looking at Japanese SMS games and FM sound stuff.
So I've got a few questions:
If I want FM sound, should I just mod a US system with an expansion board, or is there a cheaper/easier method?
If I want to play Japanese games, would it be easier/cheaper to buy an adapter so I can play them on a US system, or should I track down a Japanese Master System?
If I want to do both things, should I mod a US system for FM sound and get an adapter to play Japanese games, or buy a Japanese system and get an adapter to play US/Euro games?

m.ebay.com/itm/261822691606?nav=SEARCHAdapter for US games to Jap system. I modded my system myself for FM sound and did not find it to be very difficult. I know there is video of someone demonstrating the mod on YouTube. I have not seen an adapter for Jap games to US system in years. If you find one let me know where.

Will those special controllers for Woody Pop / Alex Kidd BMX work on a Japanese Master System, or do you need a Mark III for that?

Japanese controllers work on any system, compatibility doesn't go the other way. You'll need to have an RGB hookup to avoid video incompatibilities. Your best bet is an Everdrive on a modded SMS with region and FM options, unless you really want to buy all the Japanese cartridges.

As far as Japanese games, there's really only a handful I'm interested in, so I figured I might go for it.

Does the US version of Outrun contain paddle controller support?

SCART can be RGB or composite, it really depends on your TV. Running a Japanese SMS over RGB gives you a stock system with built in FM, rapid fire and 3D glasses adaptor, the best possible video quality and a Japanese cartridge connector. It's going to be a bit harder to find than a regular system though.
The Mark III really has no advantage over the Japanese SMS unless you really want to use a keyboard.
I think Out Run only works with the paddle controller when the console is set to Japanese.

I just got a handful of Japanese games in the mail. I'm amazed at how tiny the packaging is.
I decided to go with a Japanese Master System, so now I'm just waiting for it to arrive. I've super excited about it.
