So I was thinking on getting a PAL Master System since Master System prices in the US are fairly steep. Anything I should know when I get the system? I'm getting the II so I know I can't play Sega Card games, but at least the majority are the cartridges. Also, will the hook ups work fine or will I need a different adapter, and rf unit?

Check if your tv can accept a PAL signa first, it may well not be able to display it.

Yes, if your tv can't accept a PAL signal, picture will be in black and white. Unfortunately the II has only an RF output.
You'll also need a power converter (220v->110v) or a different AC adapter suitable for US sockets.
I'd suggest to get a model I and specifically the one with Alex Kidd game in memory. It's the best Master System!

I wouldn't bother with a PAL one unless it has been modified to play games in 60Hz.
