Yeah, I'd definitely say Virtua Fighter Animation. To call it even a button masher is an insult to those kind of games!
Danan: The Jungle Fighter and Rastan are both pretty easy when it comes to hack 'n slash games.
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World is pretty easy but so short that it really is a quick finish.
High School! Kimengumi is really easy as well once you figure out the location of objects and order of doing things.
Maybe the easiest is Astro Warrior since there are only a few levels before it repeats on end. Same goes for Transbot, Safari Hunt and many of those early looping games.

The way I went, and it's both because I'm in Canada and because I prefer the English-only manuals and back artwork, is to go for a full US (NTSC would include JAP games as well...) and then starting buying all the European games afterwards. I'd also buy the Euro version of a US game I already owned if it had different artwork (like After Burner, RC Grand Prix, Moonwalker, etc.). Now that I have my collection and am content, really all that matters to me is that I have every PAL/US game out there, so whenever I get the urge to play a game, I can. Once you step away from collecting for a bit you realize that all the variants and everything don't really matter much, they just take up space!

Yeah, lovely list, so many beautiful covers. If I had to pick one it would probably be Golvellius. Love how epic that cover looks. The guy who did that art and many of the other good looking SMS covers (Golden Axe Warrior, Miracle Warriors, Lord of the Sword, etc.) was interviewed somewhere on the internets years ago, seemed like a swell guy from what I can remember.

Label on the right, the main reason being because that is how it was packaged when sold. The fact that it is also readable top to bottom is also a nice bonus.
I used to group everything alphabetical by publisher, but as I got more and more Euro titles it became tough to find the game I was looking for in that order. Now it's just all alphabetical.

Probably shouldn't be saying this on a SEGA forum, but I've been playing a ton of Wii U this generation. Nintendo really killed it this year, they put out so many great first party games while the other platforms were languishing without quality titles. Pikmin 3, Captain Toad, Donkey Kong Country, NES Remix...I've been doing more Nintendo gaming this year than any other year that I can remember. Great to see them doing so well.

My goal at first was also just a complete US set, but once I got that I started the Euro trek and found there were a lot of great games that never made it over here. Also did the same for Japan, and while the yields aren't are strong there (most of the good exclusives are in a language you can't read) there are still some really awesome JAP exclusives like Galactic Protector, Megumi Rescue, The Castle, Rygar and Alex Kidd: BMX Trial. Right now I have a complete US set, all the remaining games that were released in PAL, and about 75% of the JAP collection. I have a few more Tec Toy exclusives but that market has always felt a bit alien and expensive to me. Still, I'd like to get a few more of the exclusives that I'd actually like to play, and then round off my Japanese collection one day. As of now though, it's the law of diminishing returns - I have almost everything I'd ever want to play, and to get the remaining games it's going to cost an arm and a leg and a lot of hunting. Probably best to just enjoy what I've got.

There probably isn't a lot of need for someone in Canada, but if there is, I'd be happy to help.

I am not the best at most of these games, but I am proud as a Canadian that the one title I was able to set the high score mark in was Great Ice Hockey.

Hey Zap, awesome to have these online in such an organized fashion. Thanks for doing that.
Love the little newsletters. I have the complete Visions and Newsletter set minus that very first Out Run issue. I've been searching for years and have only seen it a couple times, but each time they were asking $600 or something silly for it. Would love to one day finish the entire set. Loved how small and personal the rags felt before it started to blow up with SEGA Visions. Great memories and a sense of community in those little pages.

Road Rash and Lemmings both do things the system isn't designed to do. What exactly did those two games do that others couldn't? I'm interested to know. I was always impressed with the 3 different updating displays all on-screen at once in Cyborg Hunter.

Great idea and initiative - I have the same gameplay philosophy as you. I've toughed it out and completed the hardest of SMS games on real hardware without cheats (Cloud Master, those later Shinobi games), but these days it is so tough to find the extra time to game that I don't want to waste it re-doing stages. Not being invincible is important, since that's the thrill, but knowing you're not going to have to start a full game over is a nice thing. I also like having level select hacks as well, so if you do have to leave a game before completion you can just jump right in the next time you fire it up.

Columns was the first SEGA game I ever owned, since I had an NES growing up and my parents got me a Game Gear for all the summer traveling we'd be doing. For many months I was hooked on that game, and used to always hold it in higher esteem than Tetris. I like the simplicity of it, not having to worry about shapes but instead colors. That's how SEGA marketed it at the time, too, highlighting it as a portable puzzle game with colors, something the Game Boy could not offer. I've never played Super Columns, but I don't think I want to. Sometimes simplicity is a virtue, and that's a big reason why I keep returning to my Master System library year after year.

Nice pic barney, and congrats on (I think!) finishing off the Italian card collection. I still remember getting my blue Rambo to finish that sub-set and the whole thrill.

Nice to see the love for this game, pretty underrated if you ask me. Always loved the different perspectives throughout, like how each dungeon had a little different mechanic or look. It sure does get challenging during some of the boss fights, but you feel like a boss at the end when you can get those boots and just walk wherever the hell you want!
As an aside, the game is available for $0.99 on iPhones. I've played it quite a bit, but I'm stuck at a boss because it's really tough to move around when a big part of the screen is devoted to the touch D-pad. Still, great to have this little SMS game on the go!
