The code masters games use a slightly higher resolution pal mode. This wasn't part of the original graphics chip. The games won't play properly in NTSC/60HZ. There are Model 1 consoles with the later graphics chip in them, I found models with Hang on and Safari Hunt built in would work fine. Hi Playgen! long time no speak, hope you are doing good these days! It's interesting you manged to get it to work with Hangon/Safari Hunt model, no such luck for me! I'm good thanks, still around but not much spare time any more! All my SMS games are in storage boxes, and haven't been played in a few years. I didn't have to do anything special. I used to buy consoles cheaply and mod them to sell back in the day. Every one with Hang on and Safari hunt built in I had would just play the Codemasters as normal. Only in 50hz though. I guess you could probably work it out from console serial numbers as to which ones are the later ones with the updated chip.

Thankfully a lot of the best Master system games are still available cheaply. Games like The Ninja, Fantasy Zone, Shinibi, Rtype, Asterix are really common. Many games released on both the Master System and Game Gear are totally different such as Areial Assault so it's worth checking them out. Even when the games are generally the same the bigger screen resolution can make them more enjoyable such as Sonic 1 and 2 with a bigger view of the levels, and Castle of Illusion which is squashed when played on the Gamegear. If you've got a CRT television, check out the light phaser games, as there's a great selection of gun games not released anywhere else. Rescue Mission for instance is a very unique game.

Sorry for digging up this old topic again. What is the reason it won't play on genesis? I'm pretty sure that wasn't ever figured out. It was 9 years ago so my memory on it isn't fresh (that's flown by quickly!) but I think it got to the point where we were just happy it was done and worked on all Master System consoles. I probably didn't test it on a Megadrive until quite late on. The version on the cartridges was the final update, nothing was done to it afterwards.

The retron 5 has some quality issues from what I've seen, failing cartridge ports and such. It was enough to put me off getting one.

The fatalities are a proper pain to pull off. I haven't tried in a while but clearly remember trying to do them in the very limited amount of time and not managing. Do any of the emulators let you pre define a series of button moves to a single different button? Back in the day there was a control pad that let you record a series of button presses.
Alternatively don't some emulators allow you to change the speed? Slow things down and you'll have more time to press the buttons and get a snapshot. Playing in 50hz speed would help for a start. Plus use a save state at the point where you can use a fatality, so you can just play from there until you get it right.

I broke out my copy of Digger Chan the other day and fired it up.....so much fun and an absolutely beautiful job Playgen and Aypok! I thought your post about where each one went was interesting. I was wondering if you had a final tally on how many you made and where they went? I remember something around 100(ish), but was curious if you had the exact amount and where? I have my gem of a copy and will never get rid of it. Just awesome. Glad you like the game :-) I do indeed have the final numbers: Country SoldUK - 34 Germany - 24 USA - 13 France - 11 Sweden - 9 Australia - 7 Spain - 6 Belgium - 5 Canada - 5 Finland - 3 Brazil - 1 Denmark - 2 Greece - 1 Ireland - 1 Italy - 1 Norway - 1 Portugal - 1 New Zealand - 1 Total 126 I didn't know what to expect at the time, given that there hadn't really been much homebrew released on any platforms. I could have sold more for sure, but actually making them was the real limitation. Since I wasn't doing it for any profit, it meant I couldn't really spend the time it took to keep making them or justify spending out on buying everything to make them. I'd like to see more homebrew games get made, there's still a demand for them.

To be fair I did play Chuck Rock a fair bit as a kid, but ended up getting frustrated with it when the difficulty kicked in. I forgot to mention the sprites, they do look as if they just used the 16bit originals and simply scaled them down in Deluxe Paint, and maybe tidied them up a little bit. They don't appear to be redrawn specifically for the Master System. It feels like an unfinished game to me, they probably had a very small amount of time to do the conversion.
I think the main appeal of Xenon 2 on the Amiga was the music, the plodding pace and enclosed levels just ruin it(am I remembering right that some paths were dead ends, leading to unfair deaths unless you remembered the correct route?). It must have sold alright though, given that it had two different releases, lots of disapointed 90's kids!.

I think the most disappointing games were the bad ones I ended up buying as a kid, as there were so few opportunities to get a new game. The rubbish games I've picked up as an adult, I can weirdly enjoy how bad they are, as I have plenty of good games to fall back on and every bad games makes the good ones shine even more brightly.
I can remember really wanting The Terminator to be a great game, as I was somewhat obsessed with the two films. I had rented the game and struggled to get anywhere in it and didn't like it. But such was the draw of the Terminator I ended up buying it (in a Telstar double pack with Speedball 2, so annoying the packaging got thrown away!). The awkward game play just annoys me so much, and if you persevere its such a short game. Its a real shame as the graphics are great, and I actually like the concept of a single life as its a good match for the atmosphere of the film. It really should have had tighter game play, with perhaps the ability to take cover and fire at Terminators with good timing and skill rather than them just swarming on you at high speed. Then the levels could have been a lot longer too, it just feels like a rushed game to me with lots of stuff missing.
Chuck Rock was a disappointing purchase too, having already owned Miracle World and Castle of Illusion from the start, and getting Sonic not too long later, the watermark for platform games was set pretty much impossibly high. However even without those comparisons its just not a great port. Its far too slow, the black backgrounds and lack of music make it seem soulless.
Xenon 2 I didn't enjoy for pretty much the same reasons as Chuck Rock, its too slow and grim looking. I'm not overly convinced it was a great game on the Amiga, but it just doesn't work on the Master System.
Among with a few other £10 games like Bank Panic and The Ninja, I also got Transbot with my brand new Master System II. Being quite new to gaming I expected all Master System games to have an ending, and the concept of playing just for a high score was alien to me. So I actually thought my copy of Transbot was broken as it kept looping, where were the other levels? I even opened the cartridge up to check it!
Running Battle I actually like a lot, because I didn't own it or even rent it as a kid. I can't recall coming across it at all, so my only experience of the game is as an adult who finds it entertaining how inept it is. It looks like a bad nes game, plays terribly and even the cover art is amateur. It really feels like a new programmer at Sega's first ever job, and they had to do the graphics, cover art and story too, and they weren't given any proper instructions.

You can just use a normal sms 1 or 2 power supply that you (presumably) already have on a Japanese Master System. No need to buy a converter or anything.

Its crazy how fast time has gone, it seemed like only a few years ago when you started messaging me James! I've been on here 12 years but I was visiting long before that when I wasn't a member of any forums. I remember this site and smspower from probably near enough the very start of them, visiting them on a 33k dialup modem!
I can't seem to find my first post, so no idea if it was actually interesting or not :-)

I think this is the first meet up I've missed, really wanted to go especially with the awesome venue. But I couldn't afford the trip this time, I would have needed to stay overnight somewhere instead of struggling to drive home. Glad you guys enjoyed. Next time!

I bought the game back in the day for the Amiga, and wanted to like it but found it a bit too annoying. The SMS version is a pretty much faultless conversion, but like the other releases is a bit of a letdown in single player I feel. The game really comes to life in two player though where the more frustrating elements of the game make for funnier competition between you.
It does work on later versions of the MK1 console, typically if it has Hang on&Safari Hunt or Alex Kidd built in.

I think Sonic 1 is an awesome game, and has more of the fun levels than the Megadrive game which gets slower paced much earlier. I agree with the Sonic 2 level design being flawed. It feels like a backwards step from the first game, and I'd rather it kept more in common with the 16bit Sonic 2. The Neo Geo Pocket Sonic game demonstrates what a sms version of the megadrive game could have been like. I've tried to like sms Sonic 2 over the years, but I just don't enjoy it that much.

I've had quite a lot from Italy and no problems, it wouldn't have been the cheap postage option though so that probably makes a difference.
