Hey, system masters! In a discussion in the hardware section we happened upon the subject of the homebrew scene for the SMS, or relative lack thereof. Essentially, a few of us agreed that it would've been nice to have more 3D games for the system and that it's a shame there isn't more of a thriving homebrew community for the SMS that would take on that mantle. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to provide a forum here for people to dream big and let us know what your dream homebrew game for this system would be. I for one was saying that I wasn't so impressed with Zaxxon 3D and would've preferred a 3D version of the original isometric game. Perhaps we could call it Haxxon Anyway, weigh in and let us know what new life you would like to see breathed into the Sega Master System. SMS forevver!

You're not alone. There's a fairly active thread here (Well, till this summer anyway) about just that. I've never been into RPGs that much but I know a lot of SMS fans love Ys and Phantasy Star.

As a kid late 80's early 90's, I used to draw characters, maps, scenes for a game I wanted to create that resembled Rastan. So I would have to say Rastan 2 would be on my wish list. Quartet 2 would be another one I would like to see. Of course any 3D brew would be very interesting and worth the time invested.

Well, another area I think the SMS suffered a lack is in good flight/flight combat games. Yu Suzuki made great racers but I'm not a big fan of his efforts at flight games, so After Burner is out...and F16 is just baffling. I wonder if a Star Fox 1 type experience would be possible on the SMS?

The system is not designed to do 3D graphics (polygons). You can get about 5fps wireframe graphics with a lot of work. Zaxxon for the 3D glasses would also be hard to do because you would need some perspective shift in the graphics which would be basically impossible.
Try to think of gameplay, not graphics that the following generation still needed extra processors to achieve.

Oh sure, I understand it's not a 3D machine. I guess I was thinking more of the pseudo-3D that Sega attempted with sprite scaling games and maybe the mode 7 of the SNES. It's probably still an impossibility. I don't have enough tech knowledge about it to know but I think someone's attempting to make a 3D mech battle homebrew for it so maybe.

I think a "Snatcher" type game would work on the system.

I think a "Snatcher" type game would work on the system. Oooh! Snatcher...I just got a Sega CD emu up and running and have never played. I'm really averse to video games that make me read too much (I love reading, just not usually in a video game) but I've heard so much good about it that I think I'll have to try to get past that and give 'er a go! I think another good idea for a homebrew SMS game would be a rhythm-based party game, kinda like Parappa or some of the Warioware stuff but with button hits only instead (obviously). The system's got the possibility of the cute, colorful graphics necessary to pull it off...and for those who've utilized the FM chip it could be even more interesting.

I am still dreaming of a super scary survival horror game with ugly and brutal monsters/killers, genre related a mix between the Super NES´ Clock Tower and Silent Hill 2. It could be amazing in 8 bit if it´s good programmed.

Now that you mention it, I do not think Sega Master System had any "Horror" titles. There may have been, but I am unaware of anything outside of Ghost House. I would also like to see the Phantasy Star GG games (Adventure and Gaiden) ported over to the SMS.

Remember how the first Alien movie was the scariest because you never got to see the alien all that much, just evidence of; pointers to and just the briefest flashes of it here and there. Concentrating on atmospherics, mood and sound design, I believe this could be achieved on the SMS.
