I know I've seen this thread before. Reading back through the old posts, I'm surprised to see I never responded. I guess I figured I already put most of the info in my introduction post. So just incase anyone cares, I'll share my info again. I'm from Pennsylvania. Originally from Harrisburg now living in Lancaster (Amish Country, no I am not Amish). Moved to Singapore in 1990 and to Shanghai, China in 1993. Came back stateside after graduating in 97. Side note: While living in Asia I used to tell people I was from Philadelphia expecting it would be easy to know/understand roughly where I was from. Surprisingly, most European people/friends I met had no idea where Philly was. But the majority of them actually knew Harrisburg because of T.M.I. (Three Mile Island) because of the near nuclear accident. No I don't have three eyes or gills!
I'm here because like all of us I have such fond childhood memories of the SMS. Started playing again in 2008ish (Fried my original SMS1 in 98 if I remember correctly, by plugging the wrong AC adaptor in to it ... "collecting" began shortly there after. Found the site while trying to research some history of my beloved system. Joined the forum roughly a year and half ago, after lurking for a few years. This is the first and only forum I have joined. Although I lurk around smspower too. To the old guard - If you haven't posted here already, please do so. I'm sure some of the newer members would love to know who you are and why you're here too!
Edit: Forgot to mention I'm 37 and feeling older every day!

33 years old french gamer from Lyon We bought the master system in 1987, it was the pack with Hang On included as a sega card and snail maze included in the system. We sold the console + the sega card of spy vs spy (which I loved playing with my mother) to buy a japanese megadrive in 1990 with a master system converter a couple of months later. I can't remember where we bought the master system (I was 5 years old ) but I still have all of the games we had back in time (except for spy vs spy and hang on )and one of them has a sticker of the shop (shinobi): Le Nain Jaune, which is a toy shop in the center town that still exists ! (but does not sell videogame anymore) I started collecting again at christmas 1998, buying Phantasy star CIB in a videogameshop (in the same street than le Nain Jaune !): Score Games. I remember I paid 10 francs for it (which, by the time, was 1£ ) and was incredibly happy because I had wanted to play it since, like, forever: the pictures in the game catalogs and the complete solution in Player One (a videogame magazine from 1990s) always attracted me. After that, I bought a couple of games I always wanted to play in the same shop until a Cash converters opened nearby my parent's house (it was a 5 minutes walk) where I started to buy any master system games they had for 2 euros each including brand new games with the sega seal or rarer stuff like out run 3d or power strike II, good old times One of the first games I bought on ebay was the sega card of spy vs spy, it was in 2001. Before that, I had bought a couple of megadrive games on ibazar (which was a french auction site that ebay bought) I started to go on internet board in 2001, mainly fighting game forums. And in 2004-2005, registered in a dozen of retrogaming boards, including sega8bits.

England, living near London these days. I never really saw video games until my sister got an SMS2 in 1990 or so, and I've been hooked ever since. I bought my own from Tandy a year or two later, and then never had money for upgrades so I kept on playing up to 1997 when I went to university, got on the internet and learned about emulation (as an easier alternative to "proper" videogame piracy). I've never quite managed to move on from there, I've never got into collecting but I love figuring things out to discover and preserve all we can from this almost forgotten generation of video gaming.
I got a Mega Drive in my work Secret Santa this year, I'm not sure about it though, it seems a bit too fancy...

I'm from Northamptonshire, UK. Whether it matters much is debatable, since I postdate the Master System by nigh on a decade and therefore have no first-hand memory of it. I'd never even heard of it until years after I'd grown accustomed to the internet (I'd heard of the Mega Drive, but only through word of mouth).
My first game console was the PS2 and as such was able to play PS1 games but otherwise, like any philistine, my retro gaming fix was restricted to emulation. And, once again like any philistine, the only Sega games I played were the Sonic series and anything directly related to it.
No useful Sega Saturn emulators existed at the time, however, and so in order to play certain games which weren't available on any other device, I had to get my own Saturn. I ended up with a job lot of Saturn titles, some of which I already owned on PC or had emulated, but it occurred to me I was having much more fun playing these games on a Saturn than I'd had with any emulator, so during the following years I started buying other vintage consoles.
In order to satisfy my appetite for 8-bit games I eventually got myself a Master System, and I think the decision to buy one of these over a NES was indeed determined by the region I'm from. It's just so much easier to build a decent collection of Master System titles than it is for NES titles- something that could probably be said for any Sega system vs. its Nintendo competitor (save for perhaps the Saturn/N64). Though as with any console, I only pick up the games that I think I'll like.
I think the first SMS games I played were the 8-bit Sonic titles during my emulation years, but since getting a Master System I've discovered some of my favourite games like Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, Psycho Fox and Wonder Boy 3.

I'm from the U.S. Although the NES sold a lot more here, I was lucky to have a couple of friends who also preferred the SMS, so between the three of us, we were able to borrow each others' games and check out a lot more titles than we would have if we were completely isolated. We preferred Sega to Nintendo primarily because of Sega's arcade pedigree, but we were also interested in computers and technology in general and could see that the SMS had superior capabilities. I will say this - even though it was a distant second place in the U.S., I think Sega (and Tonka for a while) did a great job in getting the system out there, as they were fighting an uphill battle against Nintendo's thug tactics for several years. I'm here mainly because I still really enjoy playing Master System games, and I'm also fascinated to learn about other peoples' perspectives on it. Having not really known about its great success and bigger library in other regions until recent years, it's almost like a bunch of brand new games have come out for my favorite system from back in the day. An U.S. Player that preferred the SMS? You have my respect man. Im from Brazil. SMS ruled here. Poor nes.
PS: Tec toy yet sell Master System today, here.

Hello, I'm from Leiria, Portugal. In here, the NES was as rare as the SNES, both killed by Sega. I got a master system 2 when I was 5 years old, my first console. Came with Alex Kidd iMW and Sonic 1. I have a small sms collection, which I Every so often add a game or two. Came to this forum because I love the system and wanted to discuss more about it with people.

I am from Belgium. Started with Synclair ZX. My first console was the Master System 1. And there a new world opened. The reason why i am here? Sharing the hobby with ppl that have the same hobby. My interests in Sega Master System go further then the games , consoles and hardware. I admire ppl from those times becose if you can imagine ... in that time there was no windows , no self building game kits or heavy computer systems. It was all about programming. And for that time , that was top of the mountain. Specialy Sega with there advance technologie for that time. They even had 3D on there consoles wich came back 35+ years later. Talking af beeing ahead of there time. I wonder how far they would be right now if they did not have the dreamcast CD/DVD incident wich flipped the ship upside down. I am 42 years old now and seen the evolution of consoles and games grow till what they are today. Still gaming. Must be in my blood.

Well,
I'm from Portugal. And at first I registered mostly because I ocasionally lurk around the forums and like to ask a few questions here and there.
Lately though, it seems like I've been doing too much youtube self-promotion >.>
...sorry about that.

Yeah I check out Manchester occasionally, but not really for many games as I don't have much space for many more. I have been to retro play a few times on the top floor of Afflecks and I love some of their old video game range and related merch

Yeah I check out Manchester occasionally, but not really for many games as I don't have much space for many more. I have been to retro play a few times on the top floor of Afflecks and I love some of their old video game range and related merch I like afflecks but it has changed a lot from when I first went about 15 years ago, it was mostly goths back then and my ex was a goth. The games place is interesting, seen some cool things there and some quite good deals. The down side with Manchester centre as a whole is there are too many people trying to be cool for the sake of it, I like the bookstall just down the road from afflecks down towards the arndale market (plus it's only a couple of minutes walk to the massive branch of the works- I read a lot)

I'm a Yorkshireman, (UK). I first had the system as a kidd. A couple of years ago, I was re-united with my Mega Drive which I'd left at a previous house. Then a few events happened which spurred me on to collect consoles, games and accessories. I soon had a reasonable collection. MegaDrive, Master Sytem, Game Gear, Dreamcast but no Saturn yet. The Master System id my favourite of all my consoles, one of which is from I think, 1978. I've only got more games for another console than the Master System, and that's the Xbox 360. When the Xbox One came out, 360 prices dropped massively, so I scooped up a lot.
My Master System is placed next to my Xbox One, and still gets games bought for it now, and gets used by even my children. Even though there are plenty of videos on MODs, It's still nice to research stuff, and I'm hoping to maybe see other ways to do stuff. I'm mid through a project to put a pause button on the controller, and possibly a reset button to. eventually, just to see if i can, I'd like to attempt swap out the BIOS chip and have it so I can choose any game to built in.
