I'm from Canada it was my first system too and right now the only I have.. the games were a little hard to find here especially in ontario. I've been here since 2004 and started collecting games for the system around that time again and yeah I can't believe it's that long already too ShadowAngel! I remember how great it was to find this community and you nice people too

Great idea for a thread. As a matter of interest speedstartmq - how old are you? The only reason I ask is that I find your experience of the SMS when you were younger to be very odd (i.e. that you weren't really aware of it) - it was massive in the UK, in every computer game shop and loads computer game magazine from the late 80s though around 1994 (Mean Machines then Mean Machines Sega, Sega Power, Sega Force then Sega Master Force). Certainly throughout the late 90s until mid 00s it was very very common to be able to pick up games in Gamestation, when the same can't be said for NES games. Of the friends I had, it was probably not too far off 50 / 50 in terms of NES / SMS ownership, but if anything it would have been slightly in favour of the Master System. I really fine it incredibly difficult to understand how anybody who was a child or teenager at the time can't have known a fair amount about the SMS. In any case, I'm from Paisley in Scotland - was born here, then moved out to a small village called Bridge of Weir until I was 19 when I moved back to Paisley. I'll be 34 later this year (no idea how that happened... ), and am married with a son. The Master System was not the first console in our house (that was the Atari 2600), but was the first that my brother and I bought with our own money (our Gran bought us the 2600 against the wishes of my dad who didn't see any benefit to us playing computer games - this was also why we had to by the Master System ourselves as we were not allowed one as a present). My dad did eventually soften over the years and a couple of years after he was happy to get me a game or two for Christmas / birthdays. I had already played the console lots in the past, as I mentioned in a thread a couple of days ago one of my friends had one. The version we had was with Alex Kidd built in, and both my brother and I absolutely loved the game. I have so many stories linked to the Master System when I was young that I couldn't possibly share them in one thread, though most I have told at various points and in many threads through the years here. As with most people, I neglected the console for a good few years - probably from around 1996 until around 2000 when I got more interested again, especially as more and more information became available on the internet. Around that time, I started collecting bits and pieces, and when ebay came along and I joined the site in 2002 I began collecting more seriously. I completed my European collection (when I say completed I mean at least one complete copy of every game, I'm not bothered about varients) around 3 or 4 years ago now. I still have a couple of Brazilian games to get hold of, but I'm not particularly bothered as I've got pretty much everything in my collection that I want now. Once I get a new house (flat currently for sale), I intend to have my console set up all the time, a luxury I don't currently have (I used to, but wife and baby have too much stuff and are too likely to break things!!). That's about it I suppose!!

Nice comments everyone, fascinating stuff to learn how you all got here! At the moment it seems pretty mixed in terms of location, so I'm interested to see how this develops further. To answer your question kungfukid, I'm 23, so I was born early 1991. Given the time I'm a latecomer to the Master System's lifespan. People could say that by the time I was old enough I should have been playing the Fifth Gen of consoles (PlayStation, N64, SEGA Saturn) but I started in 1994 with the NES and the Mega Drive. I continued with these up to 1998/1999 where I got a PlayStation (around this time my grandparents gave us an old SEGA console which turned out to be SMS2 wit Alex Kidd built-in which my parents lost/threw away )and then a PS2 in 2002. At Christmas 2003 I got a GameBoy Advance SP and Sonic Advance 2, which kick-started my memories of SEGA games, and then a GameCube with Sonic Adventure 2 and then Mega Collection etc. Given that I was playing old games again I then went to the effort to find where my old Mega Drive II was, and found all the games for it. I also played Sonic 1 SMS emulated at school on a website and thought that was awesome. In 2009 I bought my own Mega Drive, realised in 2011 I could get an attachment for it to play Master System games and then here I am... Weirdly enough, I've gone to tonnes of places looking for old consoles and deals, and only once ever seen SMS stuff and I've seen more NES and other consoles. Given that the SMS sold very well in the UK as it turns out, I'm really surprised and I can only put this down to pot luck! As it sounds, you're living the dream eh? Wife and kids, fond memories, en entire collection to set up! You've gotta show some photos when you do, I love seeing a collection installed and set up! I've only got a mini collection myself kinda coupled with my Mega Drive stuff. I'd like the card version of Hang-On too but I'm more interested in seeing everyone else's stuff. http://instagram.com/p/qTlmWZAbtN

I'm 33 and live between Manchester and Liverpool in the UK. I got an SMSII around 1990 so I would have been 9 at the time. Before that I just used my Mum and Dads ZX Spectrum. The SMS was my only games console untilI I got a Philips CD-i in 1994 ish. To fund the CD-i I had sold my SMSII and games to my Dad. About 10-11years later I found my old SMS and games at my Dads house and started playing it again. I joined SMSPower forum in Dec 2005 and then here in Aug 2006. I collected for the SMS for about 3-4 years and still do keep my eye out for items. Still visit the forum here nearly every day When I had the SMSII I also had a Game Boy and later an Atari Lynx. I very nearly started collecting for the Lynx and joined Atari Age forums in 2003, I wasn't very active though - just checked and only posted 4 times!

I think you mean December 2005? 1995 would have been impressive as it would predate SMSpower

Living in Guildford but originally from Cambridgeshire. The SMS 2 was my first console in what must've been xmas 1991, prior to that there was my Dad's ZX Spectrum and I loved playing arcade shooters on holiday. My parents bought me the SMS 2 bundled with Operation Wolf because I loved the game in the arcades.
Started buying games for it again in about 2005 when I found a retro shop in Norwich, then ebay. Only interested in buying games I want to play though.

When I had the SMSII I also had a Game Boy and later an Atari Lynx. I very nearly started collecting for the Lynx and joined Atari Age forums in 2003, I wasn't very active though - just checked and only posted 4 times! The Lynx is a great system and it's not too hard to get a full set; only about 75 commercially released games (excluding homebrew). AtariAge is a forum of many forums. Virtually any system you care to mention is covered in some fashion and, even if it isn't, you can start a thread on the subject and expect to receive intelligent and informed responses. Most forums have unspoken social rules about the systems you can and can't talk about, but AA is pretty much open to anything. I'll add a bit more about my backstory since everyone else has gone into more detail. Like Rupert and Kungfukid, I'm 33 (or will be next month) and I've been involved in the retro scene for about five years now. The first retro system I bought was a Commodore VIC-20 because my parents had one when I was very young and it packed up before I was old enough to remember it so it was kind of a lost experience. After that came the C64, Amiga, Sega, Nintendo, Atari and now it's got to the point where I have pretty much every retro system in the mainstream market. I recently built my own PC for the first time and there was a part of me that hoped it would herald a future of emulators, hard drives, cloud storage and a lot of free space in my home, but it hasn't happened. I'm still an OCD hoarder with kitchen drawers/cupboards full of retro gear and boxes that I have to move from my sofa to my bed every morning and vice versa every night.

I'm 32, from U.S.A., and I came here to get back in touch.
As I stated when I first started (which was this year), we had a SMS and NES growing up...got them the same Christmas. However, the NES scene was much bigger. I don't recall seeing SMS games for rent to be honest.
The games we got that year were the ONLY games we ever had or played. I don't know anyone else who had one. Years later after a divorce I sold off most of my video game collection (almost 100 systems, nearly 1500 games). A very tough decision but I had to take care of my daughter.
The SMS went and I later regretted it. At one point a local store had numerous games come in, but I wasn't back in the scene so I didn't really care. Now I'm back in, having bought a used system. I haven't played it in a while, but I've been collecting games for it and I feel I've discovered a second childhood.
I hope to have a complete collection someday, but I have a lot going on to where that will take a long time. Either way I'm going to have fun with it and enjoy the forum.

New Zealand! Im 31 so was in the right age group to grow up with SMS. After playing all my friends and neighbours consoles I probably nagged to get one, lol. Got it one Christmas and was addicted. Played it all the way up until getting a PS1 as we skipped the SMD era.
NZ is a Sega country, I only had 1 friend that had a NES and another that had a SNES. I started collecting again last year which brought me here trying to locate more info. I think I started playing again to relive memories and there is alot of games I never knew about, plus I just kind of like collecting stuff and at least you can do something with it when you get it!

I am from Newcastle area, I am 41 and started out with a Harvard colour master which was a pong machine, we then got a rowtron electron, and a 48k speccy, in 91 I bought a SMS2 for £49.99 but around that time there was a slight shortage of games and consoles but it soon picked up the only problem then was deciding on what to buy for it.

I am 43 and from West Bromwich in the Midlands area of the UK, after magnet,led/vacuum table top and LCD games I received my first console (Atari 2600) and then my first computer (ZX Spectrum) my third machine was the Sega Master System which like my first two machines I have very fond memories of. Today I play very few modern games preferring to U-turn and relive games and Systems I either owned or missed altogether, that is why I am here basically to read about peoples opinions and memories of the SMS games I used to play, I am a member of around fifteen retro gaming / arcade forums and listen to almost as many podcasts but I do try to get here and post at least once a month

Finland here, I'm 37. I'm afraid SMS lost to Nes here and I'm not even sure if MegaDrive won SNes in Finland. But not big margins in either. Still, Saturn and Dreamcast weren't imported at all. I'm here because at christmas 1990 my dad was too cheap to buy me MegaDrive
