Explaining the tricks mostly requires you to have a knowledge of how the video system works. Many of the tricks involve updating the background tiles dynamically, for example.

I always thought Alien 3 too - mainly because of how vast the game is, and just generally how well it was put together. Micro Machines too for the speed. The first SMS game that nearly made my jaw hit the floor though was definitely Mortal Kombat (closely followed by Mortal Kombat 2), which just looked like nothing like I'd ever seen on the system before.

Always thought Road Rash was amazing. Phantasy Star was also awesome, Asterix, land of illusion, micromachines, prince of pérsia, desert strike...

I would agree with Road Rash and Robocop Vs Terminator, perhaps R-type and Ghouls`n Ghosts too as it must of been difficult to replicate such good ports of arcade games without pushing some boundaries.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs is a near perfect port of the SNES title from what I've seen but it was only released in Brazil. I'd love to find a copy of that one day.

I would say Prince of Persia had the best SMS graphics of the games I saw. Sensible soccer was the best 8bit sports game by miles. I agree Road Rash was as good as it could get on the SMS. Maybe throw Desert Strike in there.

Besides the obvious - Phantasy Star which transcends beyond master system fans...
Any game "ported" from the arcade, Shinobi, R-type, Rampage, etc.

What about games that had no business on the SMS hardware... Like Altered Beast.. The music is good but the SMS hardware just can't handle the speed that game had to play at

Well, I don't know enough about how it works to know what software would push it. However, I've long been a fan of the lightgun genre of games. I've probably played most of them from arcade to many different home systems and I can tell you the master system has some of the best. The gun is very accurate and can usually be found cheaply for between $5 and $15 out in the wild. Pick one up and check out the cowboy game Wanted or head back to the 1930s in Gangster Town where you not only get to shoot down gangsters but also their ghosts as they attempt to escape their bodies and float upward. "Oh no! You ain't going to heaven, buddy!" BLAM! So badass!
