I have 2 master systems with no game onboard. A instruction come on tv says to put off your system and put a game in. 1 says vers 1.3 and the other say version 2.0 On the back the type says (i believe) model 3010. By 1 was the hang on card in the console box added.

Are you sure about that 2.0? It's not on the list of known BIOSes.

It might be something rare... Let's see if anyone else has seen it. Do you know where that system came from?

Hello Rudi.
Could you post a picture of the label under the Master System? In which country is the console coming from? I have lots of system but honestly I haven't booted them all. Maybe based on your information I can retrieve another system with the same BIOS.
Thanks.

Thx I am from Belgium. The sega came in a lot with not too rare games. The normal tittles you find easely in Belgium. So i think 9 out of 10 that it was bought originaly here as wel. I looked in the slot. Did not see a big silver mass plate and on the motherboard i can see "SEGA 1986" with no more. If you want , i wil open it for pictures. Wont harm the console. Here is a picture from the label on the bottom. Hope it help you all further.

Just out of curiosity, have you experienced any compatibility/stability issues with 2.0? Certainly, Sega must not have had a lot of confidence in it if they quickly replaced it with something else.

The best way to know would be the dump the BIOS data and analyse the differences in code. I'll contact you Rudi see if we can find a way to dump it.

For the moment , all games work on this system that i tested. I know from my previous collecting experience that there were games that did not run on a SMS1 but did run on a SMS2. Am i correct? If so , can anyone give me a tittle that works on SMS2 and not on the SMS1 , then i wil test it on this SMS1.
Shure , i wil be glad to help dumping the bios.

Yes, you may try any of the Codemasters games (Cosmic Spacehead, Fantastic Dizzy, Micro Machines). Also, I think a few Tec-Toy games run only on SMS2, like Sonic Blast.

These days anyone can make a game. That is why SMS from the 80ties interest me so hard. In those days they had no "Windows". The consoles and bioses are absolute high tech for those days wich interest me even more. So i decided to send my SMS1 2.0 console to Bock for a bios dump. I am so curious and glad if i can help out to discover more.

In fact, we are using the term "BIOS" for the Master System but they are in fact merely "Boot ROM".
Their role is roughly to - display a Sega logo - detect which port (cartridge/card/extension) has a valid software - check the software checksum - clear memory - start the software on the right port
Once the game is started is never uses the "BIOS" again (it is possible, but there isn't much use for it). So the game are completely independent from that ROM. There is no OS or standard library per-se.
It was the case until consoles like Game Boy Advance.
Some machines like ColecoVision or MSX have a ROM with utilities that the game can use. But it's not super useful I believe.
