I have been fighting a few battles on the US side of gaming. Along with trying to get Ultima IV recognized as a legitimate US released title, Im trying to debunk the Sonic UPC. Well, something just popped up on Ebay with a weird change. www.ebay.com/itm/NTSC-USA-NTSC-Sonic-the-Hedgehog-SEGA-Master-System-Video-Game-System/301154925179Most of the reasons the seller lists for US vs EU are falsified or just off base. But this UPC goes to prove that it is an unnecessary requirement to say that you have a "US" version cause this new one proves that there is no reason for them to have been added to the cases other than for stores to have a way to scan the item in their POS system and that some stores probably didnt even use an additional UPC or (in this case) they had personalized UPCs for their specific store.

Nice find, this must be seen by everyone who's looking for that insignificant Sonic UPC sticker.
Btw, seller doesn't seem to be familiar with SMS as last explanatory photo shows the Australian release not European, that's not a Euro phone but anyway...

that seller is a fool for sure.
thats clearly a pal manual, i should know i have 2 of them. white gridlines? not on mine the foreign upc means nothing the euro phone number for tips is either fake or makes for a unique variant
if there was ever proof beyond the ntsc collections bought in uk stores (how many imports have been made by variant collectors? not many when ntsc versions are more expensive, how many americans have moved to the uk and brought their ntsc collections with them? not many)
interesting, very interesting

This IS a nice find. To go along with your theory of why UPCs should be unnecessary, my copy of Golden Axe Warrior was obtained in the US sometime in the 90's while I collected as a young child. It does not contain the UPC sticker that many claim must be there to verify it as a US version.
It is cool having the UPC just knowing you have a copy from a very limited US run, but I agree that it shouldn't be necessary, just a bonus.

Just for reference an old discussion about same subject: shinobiman.proboards.com/thread/8504/the euro phone number for tips is either fake or makes for a unique variant If you have a closer look it's just a sticker. Australian releases are full of these hints 'n' tips phone numbers: www.ebay.com/itm/251505503848

Yeah I mentioned a lot of the same things you guys said on my post about this auction on Sega Age. Plus the fact that the seller says something about dark grid lines on the box vs light grid lines yet if you look at the close up scan of both the one he is selling and the one he says is not official, they are the exact same thing. People are grasping for straws on Sonic to try to make themselves feel better on the fact that they paid $500+ for a sticker on a box.
