I was 11, and it was June or July 1993 when my father bought me and my brother a Sega Master System. I had an Atari 2600, all my friends had the SMS so I wanted it. The SNES and MD were out too, but I was spending months looking at those game catalogues, and finally I got my SMS. The first two games were the ones that came within the console box, Alex Kidd in Miracle World (built in) and Rescue Mission with the Light Phaser. At the time I was crazied with Mortal Kombat in arcades, and two or three months after I got my SMS, the news came from my favourite videogame magazine: MK was coming to the SMS. I could not believe it, until I saw those boxes at a store in my town. They had two copies only, but I had to wait two or three months until Christmas. Then, when we went to buy it, they were gone! I felt really bad and to relieve this I told my mother to buy me James Pond intead. But she said no and eventually we managed to find a copy of MK in another store, in another city. Great memories Other games I bought in 1993 that I remember, if I'm right: - Mick and Mack Global Gladiators - Shadow Dancer both great games I also played some games borrowed from friends, one that I remember now was Impossible Mission

1993 was when i was into the Mega Drive and later that year we got a PC with so many great games, i left the Master System left alone. But 1993 was a great year for that 'outdated' system, i remember Gamers (the german sega magazine) drooling all over Micro Machines, giving it an awesome rating - so me and my brother wanted it And Zool on the Master System is indeed better than the Mega Drive Version at least (The ads were always fun, Zool was meant to be the Sonic killer even in Amiga ads at the time)

If a kid has the money and wants a game, it's easy now. You can ALWAYS get it. Even in the unlikely event that it's not in 'GAME' or another majory retail chain, you can just pop online and buy a copy. Back then - yes there were companies advertised in magazines you could send off for - but many parents didn't trust buying that way, but game retailers certainly didn't stock copies of EVERY game for a system. In most cases they probably barely had 20% of those available for any given system at any one time. I remember a good few times going to the shops with the intention of buying a specific game, and ending up having to either return home without, or grudgingly make do with something else!! On the other hand, it was through buying those alternative games that often led to the happy coincidence of unintentionally finding a new favourite game!

It was my first game I bought this way, and so I did for almost all the other SMS games I bought later. I can't remember now why I searched for MK in local stores instead.

Here where I lived the SMS was long dead saleswise, though I still enjoyed playing it alongside my Genesis because they used the same RF and AC cords! Why pay for an adapter??? My Genesis had one hell of a Christmas 20 years ago... 7 games! Has it really been 20 years since some zealots thought MK was too violent, not just for kids, but in general... even movies of that era were rarely as violent as many games of today! Anyhoo... However, one of my friends who had an SMS had gotten a Genesis that year as well, as was more than willing to sell me his old SMS games luckily, He wanted cash for another Genny game and I had XMas money and ! I remember buying AK:MW, AK:HTW, AK:SW, Aztec Adventure, Fantasy Zone, Ghostbusters, Golden Axe, Rambo III, Wonder Boy for $50 and that was about the price of a new Genny Game, he felt he was getting a deal gettin rid of his old "8 Bit ***t" and getting another Genny title, but I saw it as 9 Games and some real beauties for about 5 bucks each!
Wow, in all, christmas of '93, I got 16 games, 7 Genesis and 9 SMS!

Love that story, don't know if it's just youth or if it's the natural inclination for some people to want to get the newest thing available at the expense of anything old. Oh well, their loss is our gain Did you friend ever regret selling off his 8-bit games? Or did he just do it again when the next generation of games came around?

I had my SMS all the way till PSX lol, still played it almost every day upto then aswell. Remember borrowing Mortal Kombat from a friend. Loved Streets of Rage (why don't they make these kind of games anymore?) and everyone loves Wonder Boy! I did the same... after all, it was my first Videogame Console!!

1993 flashback... I remember seeing master systems in woolworths for £29.99 with alex kidd built in. By now I had left school and my master system had long gone to pay for a megadrive which id sold in early 93.
So stood in woolworths with my bag of pick and mix I once again dropped into the world of 8 bit and bought a master system. I never bought any games for it, instead I just played the built in game. From memory I passed it onto my young neice in 1994.. wish i'd kept it now obviously 🙄
... just remembered why I gave the sms to my niece- it was due to the fact I bought a snes. I bought quite a few games over the next two years, like f zero and mario kart and played it to death.

It's quite sad to think that it was now 20 years since the beginning of the end of the commercial life of the system, though I'm obviously delighted that so many keep the system alive to this day through forums such as this! And by now it's closing in on 30 years soon... Can somebody please inform the operator that this simulation we are living in is broken and going too fast?!?

Wow, old thread back from the dead. Not sure how I never participated in this the first time around.
I gotta be honest, by 1993, I was ready to move on to the Megadrive, but my parents wouldn't buy me one. They seemed to think they has "invested" into the SMS platform and couldn't understand why I would want another system. The last game I bought for my SMS was Master of Darkness, which I picked up for £3.99 from the "what everyone wants" dept store bargains bucket. I used to go there for all my SMS games from 1991 onwards, on this trip I found they no longer had a section for SMS games (nor a Megadrive section either as it happens). I had given up hope if finding any new games until we got to the checkout, where in a basket right at the end, they had some SMS stuff. Master of Darkness, Klax and Heroes of the Lance. I got them all, and all I can say is thank goodness Master of Darkness was decent, cos the rest were absolute stinkers 😂

I got them all, and all I can say is thank goodness Master of Darkness was decent, cos the rest were absolute stinkers 😂 Ah somebody else that isn't into Klax. I generally enjoy or have fond memories for all the SMS games I had back in the day, but not that one. Might have something to do with predominantly playing on a black and white tv. In retrospect it seems like a decent port, but I've never gotten into any version of it. I picked Klax instead of Operation Wolf as 1) I didn't own a light gun and 2) I think mean machines gave it a decent review. Looking at the list of games that came out it seems 1993 was still a pretty decent year for the SMS. It was certainly still my primary game system and would be until I got a Mega Drive in 1994. I remember playing stuff like Desert Strike and Wonder Boy in Monster World around that time so I was certainly still enjoying the system even if I really wanted a 16Bit machine. Perhaps the craziest thing is this thread opened with the comment that it is 20 years since the SMS started to wind down in 1993. Well now we're closer to 30 years than not. So that's nearly three decades I've been sore about Klax!
