I registered at the WaterMelon Co. boards a few months ago (the developers of Pier Solar). I started a thread yesterday to collect the "votes" how many people would love a new Master System game, developed by WaterMelon.
If anyone here is registered there, please post a comment on their boards and say "Yes I want a new SMS game!" ;D If we can find enough people, maybe WaterMelon will think about to create a (new) SMS game.

It's always nice to see new games for old systems, especially for SMS! However, I disagree on the part of begging developers for a new game, as they will possibly end up with something rough just to satisfy people's request. A new SMS game needs love and maybe doesn't worth the hassle for companies like Watermelon-Corp due to be for a not so popular system as MegaDrive is. There are many unfinished "amateurish" games like the DARC, the Lost Raider and a few more which I definitely would prefer to support and see them released someday. Anyway, here are some ideas for new games: shinobiman.proboards.com/index.cgi?action=display&board=general&thread=7652

One of WaterMelon´s slogans is: "You want games, we make them!" WM is a company, who realizes the wishes of their investors (the forum members). Pier Solar is a good game in my opinion, and they take the time by realizing their actual projects. And if they see that many people wish a new Master System game, they make a game one day maybe (with all the time they need for it) Anyway, I respect your opinion of course Surely the most people must see the results of WaterMelon´s actual projects, which are finished in 2013, before they are convinced of WM´s work. The Mega Drive homebrew scene grows up slowly (with Pier Solar and Oh Mummy Genesis) and it would be awesome if the same happens with the Master System homebrew developments.

Sadly, they will be busy for the next year or so doing the Pier Solar HD remake, which in my opinion looks like garbage. I don't like the idea of an "HD" remake for a retro style game like this. But whatever. They're just money grubbing at this point.

Its no bad thing they are making the game available on other platforms. If they were money grabbers they would be making Iphone games like everyone else is now. I'd love to see more homebrew SMS games. Ideally not an RPG though, well not a turn based one at least. I think its important that any game needs to have something original about it, so its not just a game you want only because its for the SMS, but one you want to play because its a fun and interesting game in its own right.

Yeah, I'm holding out for the DC Pier Solar. Given how long that game took, I'd be surprised if they could put out an SMS game any time soon and the SMS is a pretty niche market for a physical release, compared to other feasible retro consoles.
Most game concepts can be realised to a fuller extent on more powerful consoles, so you'd have to think of a game, from the ground up, which doesn't require more power. Not just a platformer or shmup with tiny crappy graphics.

Haha. How true. I hate how everything is going towards iPhone games and really cheap casual games. Its really diluting the quality of games. I must admit though. I did buy the original Pier Solar, so maybe I'm just jaded because they keep re-releasing it. It is a quality title, except for the unbalanced difficulty spikes in different points of the games. I will likely pick up the one on the PC just to be able to play it without having to haul out the genesis. I would love to see a Master System RPG developed. Even a simple one or a group developed one.

I thought about a scary horror game like Clock Tower. The Master System has no real shocking horror games.
Master of Darkness and Dracula are only a little bit creepy for younger people, but a bloody horror game with real bad killers does not exist on the SMS. I would love it and WaterMelon could realize it.

No, I talk about a survival horror, here is a video of Clock Tower for the Super Nintendo with some of the scariest moments: By the way: If you are on the WM boards, post a comment in my thread there please ;D

@gordman: Please don't get me wrong, I'm not against WaterMelon and I'll reply to the thread you created, expressing my interest on a new game. I just tried to highlight the new games that already exist and need more attention. I'm really sad of the SMS Homebrew projects which almost always stay at their early steps and never get completed (Lost Raider has a serious excuse). We have the games and just need to be finished! I understand the daily routine may keep the developers away from finishing a game, as it's not their real job, but can't accept the fact having always the same unpleasant outcome. So, that's why companies like WM are needed. However I think we must encourage "amateur" developers... Btw, I have never tried Pier Solar but it looks great. I'm jealous of the many worlds that fat plumber has, so I'd love to see a AKIMW 2!

That´s true Gallos, I know exactly what you mean. You said it, the guys who participated in the Coding Competitions on SMS Power have a real job and (sadly) no time to finish their projects. Lost Raider looks good to me, nice screenshots at all! The key could be that not one or two people create a homebrew SMS game, but 4 to 6. Especially our members from France have much talent and could realize a bigger project as a team. Don´t give up hope, I´m sure we will see new SMS games in the future, physical releases of course The good thing about WaterMelon is, they post videos on Youtube (like technical updates) and talk active with their investors. Fonzie is a real nice guy. I think they are not homebrew developers anymore, because they bring the word "homebrew" on a new level. Pier Solar is a good game. But if you don´t like anime style, you will not like the game maybe ;D Here is a video from WM. Fonzie gives some updates about their actual "Project Y", a beat´em all game for the Mega Drive:

Most game concepts can be realised to a fuller extent on more powerful consoles, so you'd have to think of a game, from the ground up, which doesn't require more power. Not just a platformer or shmup with tiny crappy graphics. This is something I've thought about quite a bit. One the face of it developing a game for the SMS does highly restrict what you can do, and its true a lot of game concepts couldn't be done, adhering to the standard two button controller is a big issue in itself. But then the same could be said for the Mega Drive or even the current consoles, should people only make games for the highest spec PC's available? With a massive amount of power available from more recent consoles, it means you can create anything you want, with little limitation. But as has been seen lately, this often means they make the first generic idea that comes to mind. However if you have a very limited spec machine to work with, you have to put a lot of thought in to what you are doing, which can lead to more original ideas (in theory at least). A game can be set in any era, any country, any planet real or otherwise, with any characters and story you want. Yet the more recent machines have games that are set in realistic modern era simply because they are capable of presenting that, which leads to a lot of similar unexciting games. On retro consoles since you can't really make a game appear like real life even if you want to, that gives a freedom to create something totally crazy and unrealistic instead, which Personally I much prefer. Because the SMS has limited RAM, you can only put a limited amount of graphics in a level. While that may seem like a bad thing, it also has the upside of meaning you don't have to create as much artwork as you would for a later system. A character can only have a few frames of animation rather than hundreds, a level only so many unique background tiles. So there is less to do on that front, which means you can spend more time on perfecting the relativity low amount of imagery that can be done. Then there's the obvious bonus that making a game for a retro console gives it a lot more attention than if it were made for a PC or phone. If the game is good enough, as seen with Pier Solar, it can then transcend its original platform, and stand up on its own merits. I think there are positive and negatives to making a game for a retro machine, but the same is also true for any platform.

I like to give you an update for this: Only 11 people said yes, and one said no. To impress WaterMelon, the thread needs more positive posts.
And I need to say that I am absolutely on Playgen´s side. When I think about games like the ToeJam & Earl games, then I know that we will never have games like these on the 2K10 consoles and later.
