This is my first time at doing this. Secret Command If you dont own it can be found here: emu-russia.net/en/dl_roms/sms/7074c14a47de76549692289e30deda6f/Rambo_-_First_Blood_Part_2.7zI bought this game way back in 1992 and back then this game costed me a whopping £12.99 sonic was selling at £29.99. I bought this game on a recomendation in a magazine but what really swong it was that it was 2 player co-op so me and my brother could play it together. The idea of the game is to get to the top of the screens freeing prisoners from huts using exspolsive arrows once at the top you have to kill off a few enemys and then blow down a Gate/wall to move onto the next level So the GRAPHIC's Hmmm they looked dated abit way back when I first got it but they are clear well defined and well coloured there is very very little flicker on this game. the Gameplay is played as a vertical shoot-em-up firing arrows or shoot your gun there some power ups to be had as well when you free a prisoner he will toss a bag of arrows or exspolsives all helpful. there are a couple downers here first of all it feels really slow to move around but you soon get use to that when you play it to death secondly when you die you lose your power up arrows. I find using my Sega Arcade Powerstick really good on this game it has a real arcade feel to the game and you just want to play it over and over again to get that little bit further again its brilliant in 2 player mode and makes it alittle easier but not much. The Sounds There some tunes playing away that aint to anoying but the the death sound is when you keep hearing it . But it satifing when you here the hut blow up and on looking to see what the prisoner throws out for you. Over all the game is abit like Ikari warriors and plays simalar as well its also like Commando but a lot slower and this aint no bad thing this game is alot of fun to play and when you start to reach level 3 and higer you get a good buzz factor from it so for a game that 28 years old it aint to bad ehh. This isnt a expensive game either on ebay from £4 www.ebay.co.uk/sch/Video-Games-Consoles-/1249/i.html?_from=R40&_nkw=secret+commandGo on get playing it you know you want to

This one of the first games I ever had, when I first got my SMS as a kid (around '91 I think). I've always liked it and still play it faily regularly to this day. Of the few games I've reviewed, this is one of them. More detail on my thoughts can be found there: www.smstributes.co.uk/viewuserreview.asp?gameid=338&userreviewid=232I don't understand any hate this game gets. It's pretty solid and has one of my favourite features in a game, 2-player co-op! The only real negative comment I could make about it is that it's a bit slow. Good first choice for Game Club I'll update the Sega8bit homepage, Basketball Nightmare has been on there a while now.

I had a look at your Review and it is as good as any that I would expect although I think the replay value maybe alittle higher but other than very good.
Me and my brother called this game "Lead foot"

Great pick Dave. Just spent some time with it for the first time in quite a few years. I knew the game as Rambo when I was a kid. It was definitely Sega's answer to Nintendo's Ikari Warriors (with much better graphics). It's a great 2 player game. During the first few rounds of 2 player you essentially get unlimited continues... then it gets serious. The rocket launcher becomes essential and you only have a few lives. I have tried to beat this game many times over the past 20+ years but can never seem to make it happen... always run out of lives in the city stage .

The movement of your character is painfully slow and makes the game more difficult than it should. Collision detection from explosions is all over the place too, which really doesn't help.
It's basically Commando though and is a nice effort for its time.

The game isn't so slow when played in 60hz, its one of the games that really shows the difference from playing in 50hz speed. I like the game a lot, but really suck at it, its really easy to burn through those 3 lives.

I've played it a few times today in-between doing other things, its an ideal game to have a quick blast on when you don't want to play something for too long. I finally managed to beat the first level, it took a few attempts to realize you need to kill a load of bad guys at the end before you can break the gate thing. I got right to the end of the second level straight away, but died at the end, it seemed easier than the first though. The cartridge is going to stay in my SMS for a while and get played every so often so I can see how far I can get. I love this sort of game, pure arcade style Sega fun!

pure arcade style Sega fun! it would have felt right at home in the Arcades me thinks. so would buying a scart cable for my sega improve this game and would it run at 60hz on a pal system?

A scart lead by itself wont let you play the games in 60hz, but I'd recommend getting one anyway as it gives a much clearer image. You need to modify a PAL Master System for it to be able to switch between 50 and 60hz. If you have a SMS1 then its pretty easy even for a novice, the SMSII is quite fiddly to do though.
Theres roughly a 20% difference in speed at which games play between 50 and 60hz. So for a game that seems slow at PAL 50hz, switching to 60 makes a really good difference. All the early games are effectively designed for 60hz speed.

I think, that probably, maybe, indefinably that there was an ever so slight possibility that this was the first Master System game I ever hated

I found this little cheat....
You will need 2 controllers pluged in,
Simply start the game normally with controller 1 and when you die and the Gameover scrolls quickly grad controller " and press start to continue this works through level 1 and 2.
been posted in the SMS Cheats and PAR codes section also

Finally got around to playing this after only ever dabbling in the first level in years past. Man, the difficulty sure spikes once you get to the city level and beyond. After an hour or so of failure I went all PAR and plugged in infinite lives so I could make it all the way through. I think the last few levels aren't quite as bad as the city level either, because in the city level the policemen are so fast and there is so little cover (being that it is on a pretty open street for most of it). At least in the final couple levels you have some reprieve behind trees and rocks and such.
Fun game, the control takes a bit of getting used to, but those familiar with The Ninja should know the drill with the clunky diagonal-centric movement. It was kind of annoying that you couldn't fully turn around to shoot the baddies, but since they couldn't do that either it made it kind of moot. The last boss is pretty fun but man, it can be annoying with all these bombs being thrown at you from every which way.
I played through both Rambo and Secret Command just to see the differences, and gameplay-wise there is NOTHING different in the least bit, even down to the main sprite (shows how much SEGA was originally going after Rambo in the first place...). The only differences were in the start screen image and the small images that fill the little film frame after each level. In Secret Command they are more golden and are inexplicably pictures of a Sphinx (getting closer in on the Sphinx as you advance). The Rambo pictures make more sense and are culled more from the film (Rambo tying the headband, carrying a bow, etc.). The endings to both games are identical, but that makes sense because by the end Secret Command kind of abandons that Sphinx thing and just focuses on the usual American war machismo with (SPOILER) the copters coming in over the sunset.
What I probably found most humorous was that in the end credits it specifically makes mention of two songs, giving attributes to the composer, lyrics(!) and production. I didn't play this in FM, but I doubt these songs have any lyrics in them there...kind of weird that they'd credit the lyricist here for some blips and bloops. Sega Sound is credited as the studio...anyone have any more background on this?
Anyway, 'twas a good time and I'm glad to have finally played it. I should rip through the game's spiritual brother, Time Soldiers, sometime in the near future. Thanks for the recommend and write-up, lambrettadave!
