I can't seem to find any info about this online, but...
There's a copy of Aleste for the Sega Mark III that I've been eyeballing, but I wasn't sure if you could play Mark III games on a Master System. I know you're probably thinking "Why not just get the SMS version?" Because it's damn expensive, that's why! Plus, this gives me the opportunity to own interesting Japanese cartridges! ;D
However, I can't really think of any other games I'd want to get that are Japanese-exclusive, so that *one* MKIII cart would be a little awkward on my shelf...
Anyway, I digress. How does one go about playing Mark III games on the SMS?

You can buy an adapter to play Western carts on a Japanese console, but not the other way around. Have a look out for the Euro version of Power Strike, it doesn't draw quite the same bidding attention as the mail away US release.

As mentioned above, it only works one way, you can play western games on a Japanese Master System but not Japanese games on a western Master System.
Grab a Japanese Master System - then you can play Mark III games, western MS games, use 3D glasses without the adapter, have a built in rapid fire function and finally, you get to listen to FM sound tracks in select games.

What frank said. The Japanese system with Bock's little back port expansion to play Western games is really worth it for any serious collector. This is an odd reason to like it too, but it also doesn't have a "Reset" button (replaced by a Rapid Fire one) which was good for me because I've had a number of times where, on a western system, I've accidentally resetted the game when I actually meant to pause it, since the two buttons are close together. Sometimes if you bumped the system it could reset on its own too. Not the Japanese SMS. It's just a better build and there's a lot more interesting things under the hood, like the FM sound chip, that just opens up a whole new way to experience Master System games. Oh, and if you boot the system up without the game, you get to listen to an extended version of the Space Harrier theme along a moving green grid. BEST SYSTEM EVER.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention the Space Harrier bios, that rocks!
I find the Tototek adapter better, just easier to use and you can whack it into a cart. Also means you don't have to disfigure your MS case. Bock's is better for developers, but for people just wanting to play games the Tototek adapter is the way to go.
Another option is to grab a Japanese Mega Adapter (Power Base Converter), which will let you play Mark III games on a Japanese Mega Drive console. Unfortunately these are hard to come by and often expensive. There is a third party device available, once again from Tototek, that allows you to do the same thing also.

Alright, you guys have got me intrigued...
I did a little reading on the Mark III & it does seem to be a nice console. The cartridges are also WAY more interesting than the SMS ones.
Unfortunately, there don't seem to be many (if any) Japanese-exclusive games. Also, there's no way I'm selling my Master System...I love that thing way too damn much (so sexy!) to get rid of it in favor of a Japanese system.
Ohhh well. Once I get rich & my console-collecting knows no boundaries, I'll get one then. ;D

Don't get trapped into thinking the Japanese system is the Mark III. The Japanese Master System is the console you want.

I didn't know there was a Japanese version of the master system! All the info I've turned up says that the Mark III was Japan's SMS...does the Japanese Master System look any different from the regular one?

The cartridge slot is not as wide, and has two flaps that seperate in the middle. There's a 3D glasses socket at the front, and a rapid fire button instead of a reset button.

See I was worried about getting rid of my Master System because it's sexier than the Mark III...but that is even sexier!!
