Well guys, I've hit a bit of a snag...
Raiden, perhaps the title I'm most interested in getting, is nearly unavailable for the Japanese console. I've also been told that, when they are available, they can reach up to $70 for card-only examples!
The US version is much more readily available. Also, it seems that Blazing Lazers is much cheaper than its Japanese counterpart, Gunhed. I do agree that most of the Japanese titles are cheaper, cooler, etc., but what can be done?
Regarding this region mod...I've heard it involves much more than grounding a pin, because the pins on HuCards vs. TurboChips are actually switched! I am an amateur at this stuff; the most I've managed to do was disconnecting the pin on my NES's region chip, and (messily) soldering the power input on my keyboard synthesizer. Is this mod something I could tackle?

The Turbografx totally pwns other 16-bit systems as far as shmups go (with the exception of the Thunder Force series, and Space Megaforce on the SNES, which is pretty much the same game as Blazing Lazers.) Soldier Blade FTW! I've been playing it on my iphone. ;D

Well, Blazing Lazers is by Compile and they share out a lot of common themes between their shmup games. Space Megaforce is Super Aleste - similarities crop up there with Power Strike (Aleste in Japan) and Power Strike II.
The SNES is pretty lame for shmups (unless you like slowdown and half-arsed Darius games), MD and PC Engine are pretty even - they both have some neat exclusives and share plenty. Thunder Force IV is reason to have an MD on its own though, that game pretty much owns the hori-shmup market! I can't say the exclusives on PC Engine have swayed me to getting the console over and above stocking up on games for more mainstream (i.e. common and affordable) systems.
