I've been playing this for a few hours now and this game seems pretty damn impossible ;D. The third level is getting me so angry that I've started launching my pad across the room so I'm leaving it for now. I've beaten the pirate boss thing three times only to die straight away after becasue I've run out of time, and believe me I haven't been dragging my heels . Anyway, enough about my gaming inabilities, how bad is the slowdown in this game. I couldn't believe how terrible it was when I hit the first level boss. You jump to avoid it, and by the time the game has registered you've jumped the boss has nearly done a full circuit of the screen again. Must have had 20 attempts at that boss now and although I always beat it I haven't once got past without taking a hit because of the slowdown. Also you can't duck while on a slope. Very annoying on the drone gun part toward the end of the third level! I think this is the worst game I've played yet on the SMS, I'm going to persevere and try and finish it but I don't know how long my patience will last with this one ;D. Has anyone managed to finish it?

I recently read somewhere, someone saying this game is unplayable on SMS. I loved it on the Genesis. I've never really given the SMS version a go.

The slowdown is definitely bad, the overly long jump animation really doesn't help. However playing in 60hz does make it a bit better - but not by much. I don't think its the worst game on the sms, but like Altered Beast its overly ambitious for the hardware. If they just scaled the sprites down a bit more, it could be a much quicker more enjoyable game.
The second Strider is a lot faster, but the level design is pretty weak. Combine the speed of Strider II with the levels of Strider I and you'd have a good game.

I take back what I said about this game being impossible. I've finished this now and other than two sections (Level 1 final boss and level 3 final section) the game is pretty easy.
The slowdown is definitely worst on the first level boss, but if you use your slide move to dodge its attacks rather than jumping its pretty manageable.
The jumping animation on this game just takes so long though, its painful to watch sometimes when you can see an eenemies bullet and you know you're going to land on it. You can't do anything to avoid it!!!

I thought the first boss was a piece of cake, just jump about and constantly mash the fire button. Theres no much more you can do since the game slows down so much, I beat it first time. I'll have to see if I can finish the game then, seems pretty easy so far. Did this get a US release? They just released the Euro Strider with a barcode sticker on the back I believe, just like Sonic. Strider II didn't get a US release at all.

Did this get a US release? Yeah, but it was just a Euro version with a UPC sticker. Yeah, the boss is easy to kill, but to kill it without taking a hit is pretty hard and requires some perfectly timed sliding. When you hit the circular robot boss thing that shoots at you while you orbit it on level 3, press jump to orbit faster and avoid bullets, that's where I was messing up at first ;D.

I agree, it's the worst slowdown on SMS!
Otherwise, it's a quite good game...

I agree, it's the worst slowdown on SMS! Otherwise, it's a quite good game... It's very short though, not much replay value either, no collectables or anything so not much you can do about getting a higher score. I finished it in about 9 minutes once I'd worked out how to get past level 3

I remember that there is a way to beat the first boss easily without loosing any part of life even if I'm not sure, I didn t play this game for many years. Walk slowly before you are in the boss room. When you arrived the screen shift to show you the boss. Don t move! you are at the top left of the screen, the boss can t hit you but you you can

I vote for Xenon II as having the worst slowdown/flicker of any SMS game I've ever played.

Its is a little too slow to enjoy to be honest,if you look at almost all games which came out a little later like JPII:Robocod the speed and number of things on screen does make Strider look really poor to be honest.

Haha yeah, what a game. Terrible frame rate that is made even worse with the slow jumping animation. It was like playing a game in mud...in slow motion. I always thought the pitch black backgrounds (at least at the start - I haven't got very far) were really ugly and just made the game look even worse. Some games, like Ghouls'n Ghosts say, use the black backgrounds to thematic effect. In Strider, it just feels like they chopped the BG because it would be (even more) unplayable otherwise. I've never played it on any other format, but the SMS version certainly doesn't make me want to, either.
And I've always thought the Altered Beast port was pretty damn good considering the limitations of the hardware. The music is great and I think it plays true to the Genesis port, it just has a frustrating design at its core, with all the bouncing back and forth between enemies. I sort of like how the enemies just explode into blocks. Points lost though, for sure, for it not having the "RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE" sound byte.
