I think I must have been 10 or 11 when I first got my Master System 2. It may have been a birthday present, might also have been for Christmas. No matter, it was a joyous occasion if ever there was one. It was the SMS2 with Alex Kidd built in. I also got a couple other games with it. Passed down from my cousins who had already moved on to the Megadrive. Lucky me. Those games were Time Soldiers, Sonic 2, Rampage and Basketball Nightmare, the last one being my pick for the game club. I mostly remember getting my behind kicked every time I popped this game in. To be honest I got owned by nearly every game back then. I looked forward to playing this thing again. Sadly, unlike Time Soldiers, it’s not the original copy from back in the day, but it’ll have to do The first thing I noticed was the flicker. It isn’t as bad as the Double Dragon flicker-hell but it’s a close second. Luckily, it doesn’t affect the gameplay much. It’s fluid, relatively fast-paced and most of all, fun. I like the character design, the FMV-esque dunking scenes and the awesome (yet repetitive) tunes. Haven’t managed to get past stage four yet, although 4 tries is not really a die-hard effort Your thoughts, memories, love and hate please Attachments:

Alright... a new game!
This is one of those games that I've only played just long enough to make sure it works. I think this is the first import (PAL) game I bought as a collector.
Can't wait to give it a proper go this weekend. Good pick knuckles.

I played this for the first time over the weekend and I thought it held up pretty well for an 8-bit sports title. The cut-scenes are really nice and game feels pretty fair against the computer. The flickering can be distracting though. Whoever thought intentionally flickering the next active player was a good idea should be shot. It may just be me, but I find it very hard to play defense.

offence is indeed easier than defence. But I think that's pretty true to life for basketball I also love the fact that even though you're in the air, doing your litlle cut-scene dunk...you can still miss the shot. I also like the cover-art, we all know that SMS games aren't exactly known for their glamorous covers.. action fighter anyone?

I was a bit puzzled as to why one would sometimes miss a shot alright. Ah yes, Action Fighter. Not one of the more exciting box arts that’s for sure.

Phew. Bummer. I waited a long time to finally play this game thoroughly. Here are my thoughts...
First off, concept, awesome. Really cool idea. I thought the different characters were really cool. The cyclops, kappa, great integration of myth into basketball of all things. Design, pretty cool overall, I like the different courts. The dunk screens are pretty cool, but it's the same thing over and over so nothing too special. Still, for this time, I'd say they're pretty solid. There is, however, a great deal of flicker.
Speaking of flicker, it seems the neurons of the players are flickering on crystal meth. I have never seen such a horribly programmed basketball game before. It almost makes Great Basketball look like a work of freaking genius. The characters move erratically, I really can't explain it. They shimmy, jerk, and otherwise move at odd angles all of the time. Sometimes it gets so confusing in messes of players that you want to pull your hair out.
And then the gameplay. Phew boy, this SUCKS. Great idea, but oh how they wasted it. First off, it's really cool playing against monsters and such but, ummm, why are they all pretty much the same damn thing? All they really changed here was the sprites. LAME. There is no real difference between any of the teams, other than maybe a tiny bit of speed increase later on. Not that it matters, this game is piss easy. Took me about twenty minutes to finish it off. Why?
Wow, talk about DESIGN FLAW. This game has a huge, huge problem. I'll get to that. First off, why in the hell does your team do ABSOLUTELY FREAKING NOTHING 90% of the time? I have never seen such a horribly programmed team. They do freaking nothing for you, you do all the damn work. Second, character selection is horrid. The logical thing is for your arrow to appear above the player closest to the ball. No such luck, it doesn't seem to have any reason behind it and appears wherever it goddamn wants. Passing is pretty pointless, but at least the foul system isn't as sensitive as Great Basketball. Third, ummm, why do I seem to miss a strange amount of dunks? I swear 50% of the time I was freaking missing. Really, is it even possible to miss a fecking dunk? Fourth, and finally, the biggest flaw of this game involves a little glitch I discovered. Play is generally the same as any other basic basketball title, just with better graphics and cooler design. However, all you have to do is this. Any time the computer gets the ball, just move your character directly in front of their path. Roughly 90% of the time, they'll STAY THERE RUNNING STATIONARY. This allows you to constantly press Button 2 until you steal the ball or foul. If you foul, just do it again, it's not like your character can foul out. Using this trick, once I discovered it, I was almost able to totally shut out the LAST TEAM. Hahahahahaha!!! Man, what an overall bummer. I haven't been this bummed out by a SMS game in awhile. So much potential, shot to hell.

I used to play Basketball Nightmare a lot way back when I first bought it for £7 from a friend way back in about 1992/3. My memory was that I found it fun but easy, and that there was a lot of flicker as others have mentioned here! Well, I've stuck it back in the system and have to say that my thoughts now are..... that it's fun but easy, with a lot of flicker! lol! Not a game I'd put in for an evening of hardcore gaming, but good for a go when having a spare 20 minutes.

I used to love Basketball Nightmare when I was a kid. The dunk sequences rocked my socks.

Ugh, you must have had a childhood of horrors. lol. I thought it was a pretty good game at the time, but whenever I try to play it again, I lose horribly and can't stand the flickering. EDIT: I might have to play it through with your trick of standing in front of them. Might be fun to give it a playthrough again.

Seriously, use my trick. Don't really need it on the first 2-3 teams, but use it, trust me. The computer always seems to want to move its player with the ball (following your shot and their first pass), straight to the middle of the screen. Not sure why. At any rate, just keep the character YOU'RE controlling to the left. Once you see the computer character coming, just stand right in front of them. You have to be in front of them to steal. Just by standing there and pressing Button 2 you'll do it. At times, the computer will pass when it realizes what is going on, but you can just do it again. On another note, I'm curious what a two-player run of this game would be like. I like the different team idea, even though they're all just palatte swapped.

I don't like Basketball. In fact, i despise Basketball as a piss poor Cat sport, harsh rules, no body contact, nothing.... In video game form i like it as long as all the shitty rules are disabled, give me fouls and a hockey or speedball kind of gameplay and i can enjoy it. This way i guess i should like Basketball Nightmare. But i don't. The gameplay is lame, the CPU is too easy to beat, you just need to know where to stay and you score every single time or steal the ball. I remember a german game magazine stating that the game was unfairly difficult. Whatever they played it wasn't that game.
And the flickery graphics make the game even worse. I really prefer Great Basketball to this but don't like to play it. I think fun Basketball games started with Ganbare Dunk Heroes on the NES and NBA Jam shortly after, before that, the games sucked as much as the sport does in real life.
