You might want to make a little rule here. Technically, if you were totally insane you could just spend all your time endlessly killing minor enemies and not finishing off all the bases to max out your score. You should state some sort of rule so that it's a little fair in general.

I'm not sure whether to add that as a rule or not. While I do agree that it's kind of cheating, It might become necessary to drag some of the levels out to beat a high score, or max the game out even.
I gave it a little test earlier and according to my calculations it would take around 70+ hours of solid gaming to achieve 9,999,999 by killing the minor enemies on the first level alone, and I'm not sure that's what the game maxes out at. Personally I can't see anyone doing that, it would be much easier to work your way through the levels and toy around with the later enemies, which in my opinion isn't cheating, it's using your skills to get as high a score as possible.
What do the other members think? Add as a rule or not?

See, thing is though, I'm pretty sure after you take out most of the enemies, I seem to remember if you place Opa-Opa in a certain position and leave something sitting on the fire button set to rapid, you can seriously leave and come back with sick numbers. I seem to remember I did this once just to see.

What about the unlimited Weapon 1 secret? Technically it isn't a cheat code because nothing is entered, but it is using the game to a great advantage. I can see it going either way.

For those who don't know what the unlimited Weapon 1 secret is, you have to buy all speed power-ups and then whatever weapon you are using for Weapon 1 automatically becomes unlimited instead of running out after 15 seconds. I am fine with it being used for the competition or without, I would just like to know before I enter. What do you guys think?

I would call that exploiting the game mechanics rather than cheating, I'm not really a huge fan of this game though so I think it's better that fans of it choose the rules .

In this case, I'd vote for not allowing it- otherwise the high score thing here will be a bit silly (will be able to max out the displayed score very easily). I'd put my money where my mouth is if I owned the game, but I don't so I can't.

When I achieved my score (a while ago now), I used the weapon trick as I don't feel it's cheating. I think it would be useful to note that this game loops. So when you've beat the last boss, you'll go back to level one with the same score and power-ups, and the game carries on until you lose all your lives. If I remember correctly I looped the game about 7 times to get that score, but it can definitely be beaten.

All righty...
I've had a go on this game on an emulator, and rediscovered the problem I first noted 20 years ago... (!)
When you complete the game, and start a second round of it, my score and cash are resetting, but my lives and uprades stay as they were. So I can have a score of 8.000,000 before taking on the bosses at the end of the game, but after the title music and the restart, my score is very much lower again, and my cash has reset to zero.
I think I assumed last time I played this game that the game could only display 9,999,999, so that a score of 10,500,000 would actually show as 500,000. Now I'm not so sure- is it possible that the score resets to zero as well, and that the displayed score after a "restart" is just your score for the end bosses? Not sure...
I'm quite chuffed, though. First play of this game for 2 decades, and I saw a score of over 8million at one point, and got to round 38. I won't enter that as a highscore, though, since it was on an emulator. Confident I'll beat that when I get the real cartridge though!

Sorry to be a pain, but I don't believe you did get that score. Your score looks like 1471900. For some reason, when you get a reasonably high score the top score on the title screen maxes out. If you look at my photo you'll see the same thing: www.smstributes.co.uk/fun/hiscore/fantasyzone/ian_final.jpg

I got that score, but you're also right- but please read my earlier post.
This game bugs up when you get past 10 million, and doesn't display the score correctly (as stated above), so in this case my score of 1,417,900 was actually about 41,417,900 (it had "clocked" four times before reaching this point.
Try it out- get a high score, say 7 million, and then watch again later. It'll be less than 7 million again- this is why I was saying that this wasn't a great game for a high score on though.
Perhaps level number would be a better score? Although I believe that also "clocks" at 99 and returns to 01
