Does anyone have this? The SEGA CLASSICS COLLECTION game features polygonal updates of many of our Master System favorites - Space Harrier, Golden Axe, Fantasy Zone, Columns, Alien Syndrome, Bonanza Bros. and then a few other arcade hits like Virtua Racing and Tant R. It's fun to see these new games with updated graphics, and I have to say some of these are really great. The Space Harrier remake is, sadly, the worst, since the graphics don't look all that good and the explosions are so elaborate that they often obscure everything on screen. That's my only caveat thus far with the collection, though.
Golden Axe is simply AWESOME. Very, very fun, and it looks great. It plays just like the old one but looks totally current. There's a nice bit of story even added in, too. The magic scenes are really detailed too - they make Final Fantasy spells look weak by comparison. Fantasy Zone is a great remake too, with some new 3D bonus stages added in (a la Sonic 2) that really add to the fun. Columns plays the same as ever, but I was disappointed that there weren't many options...you can't even set the difficulty!
So from what I've played thus far, it's great for us retro gamers. I found it for $5.99 at EB Games, I'd definitely recommend it. Has anyone else played it?

I played it once and thought all the games were pretty crap, including Outrun & Golden Axe. Definitely better on the MS and MD imo...

You are like the only person who likes Golden Axe on this collection. Lots of people say its the weakest game.

Had a lot of story to it too, and Death Adder's final bow was awesome. Lots of creepy detail in his world, with the snake and the shadowed opponents. All the animation is nice, too. Gilius looks awesome. I played OutRun today, and it was a worthy upgrade. Very faithful to the original, and the improved graphics actually help it out. I was expecting a little more from the music, though - it sounds virtually identical to the Sega Ages version. Considering the full orchestration that Golden Axe and others got, I was hoping for more. Still, another nice port. Virtua Racing looked similarly sharp and at this point is the best version I've played (compared to the 32X, Genesis and Saturn versions). Looks arcade perfect to me, but I haven't played through it all.

I just finished ALIEN SYNDROME - another lovely port. That is one bloody game...sometimes it becomes hard to see with all the alien blood splattered all over the screen. Still, great fun, and the weapon power-ups played great and their effects looked striking on screen. So much love for this small collection!

i bought this one for outrun alone.. its an okay purchase if you're an outrun fan like me. Golden axe has potential in 3D, but the controls are crap + ugly character graphics and cutscenes.. i would love to see the Golden Axe update appear on PSN/XBL in Full-HD with better graphics... Gameplay wise it wasn't that bad. Fantasy Zone is okay as well, all the other games suck.

As long as we remember these games were produced as budget titles in Japan, we can appreciate them. I got mine new for $10 Canadian, which is something like 70 cents a game. They are absolutely fantastic for that price. Put me down as a fan of "Classics" Golden Axe as well - sure, it ain't no masterpiece, but it is fun and an interesting version of the game.

Yeah, amen to that. I didn't think the Golden Axe controls were crap, either. It certainly worked well for me. I've been playing Fantasy Zone a lot. Man, that game gets pretty tough near the end. I can do quite well, but that eyeball boss does a number on me. I can make it to him with losing one life, but I drop the other six instantly on that guy. The tough thing is is that once you lose your speed powerup after the first death the game falls into shmup syndrome. That is, without the speed powerup it is nearly impossible to finish otherwise. Oh well, I'll keep plugging and eventually emerge victorious. I mean, it's Christmas, right?!

I'd rather play with traffic than play this travesty again. Horrendous, with no fun or atmosphere of the original classics. It's like re-making a great film like Blues Brothers, in other words Blue Brothers 2000, but saying it's just like the classic original, but better.

Tell us what you really think, Phil. ;D The Fantasy Zone port is virtually the same. You can play it like the arcade version, or with the added 3D bonus levels in the normal version. The best part is that the bosses are fully animated like the arcade (unlike the SMS version where hit registers sometimes aren't even noticed) and there isn't any slow down. It's actually a much more challenging game, too. I went ahead and got the Sega Genesis Collection for PS2 as well, this one looks great also, since it has many classics, RPGs and even some obscure finds like Golden Axe III, all presented as they were originally on the Genesis. I'm looking forward to playing Sword of Vermilion most, actually. Yu Suzuki is the king.
