One of my favorite things about the Master System are the beautifully drawn covers many of the boxes have. Whoever was responsible for all that art between 1988-1989 deserves to be singled out and mentioned. It seems like there were a few people in SEGA's camp who were firing these out, since groups of games have distinctive styles.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land, Alex Kidd: The Lost Stars, Psycho Fox and Dynamite Dux all seem to have the same cutesy animation with airbrushed and tidy primary colors. Lord of the Sword, Golvellius, Altered Beast and SpellCaster, by contrast, draw inspiration from classical painting with more realistic brush strokes, rougher edges and a reliance on earth tones.
Looking at the similarities between both pairs, it's pretty clear there were specific artists that contributed a number of works for SMS covers. What I'd like to do with this thread is a) try to recognize these individuals by name, and b) try to organize similar covers into a list to try and figure out just how many each probable artist did for the system.
Can anyone help?

Captain Silver might just be the game to bring both together, since the Euro version has that former cutesy style, while the US version is done in the more mature latter. Perhaps it was some bad communication on SEGA's part and both artists just ended up doing the same thing, so they just released both versions?

This would be quite awesome. John might still know, I'll contact him about it. Someone did this once and found a few artists from NES games and purchased the original art. It would be cool if some still existed.

I think this is an excellent idea! As you say, these people do deserve some recognition for the covers that we've all known and recognised for some 20 years! I always liked the Lord of the Sword, Altered Beast etc. covers. For some reason my favourite cover has always been 'Shadow of the Beast'.

I'm pretty sure the Psycho Fox , Basketball nightmare, Laser Ghost, Summer Games and World Games covers are done by the same artist.

Hmm, awesome? I won't say much more than this, I have located the original creative director, who is still working as an artist. We'll see what comes of it.

That's awesome, Stan, you have to pursue this! I know there would be a lot of people here interested in all that art. Man, that would be awesome.

Yeah, we'll see, and as it always seems to go, awesome stuff like this comes in a flood. Not only have I located that guy, my Steve Hanawa interview is picking up again and I have a huge chunk of it written, I've located info on the mysterious Beeshu Vs. Sega case AND now I have a contact with another person who worked with Sega back in the day, in fact he's friends with Steve and worked on the three Activision titles. More on that when I get word...

Nooooo, he said he doesn't have them, I misunderstood his first email. He's willing to talk all about it. Apparently Tonka, who was who he mainly worked for, had the art. Probably gone by now.
