I wanted to put the feelers out on a potential new location for this years event. Earlier this year The North West Computer Museum opened. I’ve been a couple of times now and asked the chap there about us using some space there for our event. He was open to the idea but had not done anything like that before so I said I would get back to him to discuss further if people were interested. This thread is to find out how many people would come if the event was in this new location. I took a few photos of the room we would be given to use, he said he can move all the existing computers out of the way for us. The location - 4th Floor Leigh Spinners Mill Park Lane Leigh WN7 2LB There is a car park at the Mill and the nearest train station I think is Atherton, 15 minutes drive away (i’m sure car drivers could help those people out with a lift to and from the station?). Here are a few photos of the Museum from the couple of trips I have made - http://instagram.com/p/Co-PCXjIIa0 http://instagram.com/p/CoKqrlgosAI He said we can use is a side room that is full of BBC Micros, which he can move out of the way for us - my second link shows that room on one of the photos. 6th photo in second link. The man at the museum said we can make a contribution to use the space, I’m not sure exactly what he is thinking but the normal entrance charge is £7 so perhaps if we all paid £10 each instead.. I’m not sure? With that said, can people respond to this thread to say if they would be interested in attending if this was the location. Also say if the answer is no but would have come if it was the old Manchester location again (The Flour and Flagon). Or if you have any other suggested location.

Hi James, Great idea mate although being forced to miss last years meet (still not speaking with the wife!) I would turn up if it was being held in a field with no electricity points on a rainy day. I don't know if it's useful but I did make a little video of the place when I visited a few weeks ago (see below). I think the back room with the BBCs in should be perfect and I'm guessing he probably has spare CRTs too. Anyway, I'm good with wherever we go but I do think this place would be ideal. Keep us posted mate. youtu.be/kOcwzDAYz_U

It looks like a great location. I'd be happy to make a contribution for using it. Do you know what sort of time we could have the room for? Would also be great to get an idea of what hotels/restaurants are nearby.

+1 what 8bitboyuk said (I'll be there wherever it is). I do think that this would make an ideal venue to hold the meet though.

Ian, there is a Thistle Hotel at Haydock which is a 10 minute drive away and it's on the M6 junction so that would be where I recommend you stay mate. Or somewhere nearby. There's a big race course so bound to be hotels about. Then just a few minutes drive to the museum

I’ve been active on and off since 2007. Never had the chance to attend any of the meet ups. The location is 50 minutes away from me so I’d definitely be down depending on the dates

rupert Did you find out what times we could have the venue for? We should probably start a poll to find out what dates work best for people.

ian And anyone travelling up from The South. Don't know if this is useful but marked the Mercure Haydock Hotel on the map at Junction 23 of the M6 to show the distance from the Museum if we end up having it there mate. It's about 7 miles but the hotel is right next to the M6 so easy enough.

Today I spoke with the museum owner about the event. They recently hosted a group of Amiga enthusiasts and are happy for us to use the space. I said we would not require exclusive access, which was a question they asked( I.e. close the place off just for our use, I don’t believe this is needed). Doing so would limit us to weekdays anyway. I suggested our group size would be 6-10 and we would likely have around 4 systems set up which we would provide (although I’ll ask if they have CRT’s spare we can use to make it a little easier) I suggested the date of Saturday 5th August as the poll suggests that’s the most popular date ( shinobiman.proboards.com/thread/11303/sega8bit-power-event-2023-preference) - this was a good date for them as they are on holiday the week after so will be closed. I also said it would likely be from around lunch time onwards and they said they can stay open later than the usual 16:00 close time for us (seemed more than happy for this). Cost wise, it’s usually £7 per adult to enter the museum but they said based on ~8 of us meeting there for this event they would charge about £4.50 each. This is pretty great as I was kind of expecting us to be asked to pay a premium however I guess it’s good for them too to encourage this kind of activity. They also mentioned although the there is a cafe within the mill building they could provide us with some hot or cold food on the day in the museum if we arrange that in advance either sandwiches or jacket potato’s that kind of thing. Obviously will have to work out the details but I expect that would be a cheaper option and easier. Please let me know thoughts and I can confirm the arrangement with them.

Fantastic James, well done mate. 5th works great for me. That sounds great and also good news about the fee. Doesn't sound like you needed to haggle too much either. I think the owner is a pretty good guy. I'm happy with jacket potatoes and sandwiches. etc mate. Only worry is if we need to take TV's. Bugger that up all them stairs haha. .
