I know for people living in Europe it's easy to include Sonic in as a mascot (He had more games on the SMS than Alex) but because I live in the US, I had to vote for Alex Kidd. To me, he is a symbol of the SMS.

Thats the ponit I guess that depends on where you live. Here Sonic was the last SMS game released here in the US. There more Alexx Kidd titles than anything else.

Even though I am a huge Sonic fan, Sonic is more of a Genesis/Mega Drive mascot than SMS. Besides, only 1 Sonic SMS game came out here in the US, and it's so rare I've never even seen a US version. I have a Europe one instead.
Alex Kidd is probably the best choice because all of his games (exept for the Mark 3 BMX one) came out everywhere and even though they are still rare in the US I have managed to find Miracle World and Lost Stars.

Sonic, rare? Blimey, I never saw that coming! Its very common in the UK. You NEED to import Sonic 1 and 2. In fact, I'll sell you Sonic 1* and 2! They're so easy to get on eBay and the vast majority of UK sellers have the open-mindedness to post worldwide.
* Sonic 1 has no instructions

Well I've already got Sonic 1 complete and I have Sonic Chaos complete, but I only have just a cart for Sonic 2. Is yours in good shape and does it have the hanger tab thing on top?
How about Sonic Spinball or Dr. Robotnic's Mean Bean Machine? I seen 'em on eBay a few times.
Anyway,
Everything I read about SMS says that Sonic 1 was released in the US but I haven't seen one here, even on eBay.
All SMS things period are rare in the states. They aren't at games stores anywhere, even places that sell used games. If I'm lucky I'll find some at a flea market or a thrift store. There is only one game store I know of that sells SMS, and it's a 3 hour drive to get there! Thats where I bought my SMS as a matter of fact. eBay is pretty much the only source you can rely on.

Opa Opa was the original official Sega Mascot. Just read the Zillion instruction manual. He showed up in a bunch of other games, too.

well, im one of the lucky SMS gamers who live in Europe, and though i own all Sonics SMS outings, i still voted for Alex Kidd. Like someone above said, Sonic is more of a general Sega mascot, but Alex Kidd for me personifies the Master System! personally, i would have liked to have seen WonderBoy in the choice though!

I think the best one is Alex Kidd...Sonic is better for Genesis or Game Gear...and Shinobi it´s not a mascot!!!

what about the snail in the maze game???

The snail maze game is only in the 1st version of the SMS 1, other SMS 1's have Hang On/Safari Hunt or the one I own just has Hang On, so I don't think thats really a worthy candidate.

well, in europe if there´s one game that makes me think in the SMS, that´s AKMW. Alex is the true mascot of the SMS.
