Don't get me wrong, the Genesis/MegaDrive Sonic games are amazing. However, there's something about the Master System Sonic games that I much prefer. Keep in mind I also have some nostalgia for the Genesis versions, but even with that, I got to go with the MS versions.
I recently found a copy of Sonic 2 CIB for cheap, so I'm excited about that as well. I know many people here in the U.S. probably never played the MS versions, and even if so, would probably choose the Genesis versions. What do you think? You prefer the glorious Master System versions, or do you like the Genesis/MegaDrive games better?

You know what, I think you have a point there! Personally I prefer Sonic 1 on SMS for sure. Sonic 2 I like both.
Keep an eye out for Sonic Chaos as well :-)

I definitely prefer the sms version. For me, sonic 1 to sms is the best sonic game The sound is good, the graphics is good and runs perfectly on the screen.
The other games has stressed sound and the graphics runs a bit to fast most the time. Sonic 1 to mega drive, had a ok level 1 but again , it goes very fast all the time.

Another fairly common opinion is that the SMS version of Castle of Illusion is better than its Mega Drive counterpart. Does anyone have any other examples? Shadow of the Beast maybe?

Plus 1 for both Sonic and Castle of Illusion being better on the SMS compared with the Megadrive versions. I always thought that Super Kick Off was better on the SMS too as I found the controls to be a bit difficult for the Megadrive.

This is one reason why it sucks here in America...lack of MS appreciation!
I knew Sonic 1 was regarded as one of the best MS games. For years I heard people say it wasn't that great. Argh!
What really got me thinking of this is Sonic Chaos. I was playing it the other day...and it was just pure fun. Simple, yes, but fun. I need to replay Sonic 1. I forget the level right off, but the music is amazing.

Sonic 1 is definitely better on the SMS - on the MD it's just too slow going with traps the moment you try to go fast. With the SMS version, it's an out and out platformer from the beginning and it shows in better level design.
Sonic 2 is the best 16 bit Sonic - it gets the level design right without making them bloated (as they became after this one) and keeps sensible access to the special stages for obtaining chaos emeralds (it gets silly in later games). I still like the SMS version as much though - it has (after the first zone anyway) tougher boss battles and I like the slightly garish colour scheme. The mine carts and flywheels are fun but it's a shame they couldn't do better with the glider.
Sonic on the whole goes downhill after 2 for me anyway, both 8 and 16 bit. Sonic Chaos certainly looks the part but damn it is far too easy.

Im with you. Sonic 1 on SMS is one of my fav games of all time. I also love 2 and Chaos. But, beware of Sonic Blast. Its a tec toy game and its awful lol. Im sure most people over here in the US still dont even know that there are Sonic games on the SMS. I was one of those years ago. I didnt know about these until 2000. When i found out, i was actually shocked, and proceeded to buy them all lol (even Spinball). I still pop in Sonic 1, multiple times a year, and have a play through and enjoy it the same everytime.

I just got my Sonic 2 in. Yep, I'm still horrible at it. I played it on Game Gear a lot years ago...never got far in it.
I've seen the Brazil game, played it via emulator...I have Sonic 1 and 2 and Chaos. Probably all I need for Sonic, eh?
As much as I want to play them, the little ones don't give me much time for games that have no save. The few days they aren't at home with me, I can really get time to play them.

Honestly, when I was a child, Sonic didn't interest me ... However, I have to go deeper into the various versions of the Master System to be able to give you an answer, but I find the versions of the Master system really appreciable, considering that Master System in less powerful than Mega Drive/Genesis.

I would say that for those that have played a fair bit of both the SMS and SMD versions this probably isn't an unusual opinion. In general I probably prefer the SMD games, but I would rate SMS Sonic 1 higher than the SMD version. It just feels like its design has been implemented in a more consistent fashion. Plus I enjoy finding the Chaos emeralds in the stages instead of the bonus stage (and SMS Sonic 1 has a better bonus stage too).
Sonic Chaos is enjoyable, but probably a bit too short and easy. Sonic 2 is another matter altogether and is easily my least favourite of the SMS games (and nowhere near as good as SMD Sonic 2). The stage designs are just so obnoxious!
Of course most people probably haven't played the SMS games and are unfortunately likely to dismiss them without giving them a proper chance.

Another fairly common opinion is that the SMS version of Castle of Illusion is better than its Mega Drive counterpart. Does anyone have any other examples? Shadow of the Beast maybe? That's pretty much my oppinion. Sonic 1 on the MD really isn't that great of a game, to me it always felt more like a "Look what the Mega Drive can do! Blast-Processing! Wooooo!" kind of technical demonstration than a proper game. The level design just feels to generic and the gameplay isn't really great. Sonic 1 on the SMS is impressive for a old 8-bit console. The gameplay is great, there's a lot of variety in the level design (more so than on the MD, just look at the vertical Jungle Zone) and i also think that Yuzo Koshiro's rendition of the Sonic music is actually better, wether it's the funky jungle zone music or the synth wav-ish Scrap Brain Zone, it's really great work. Can't say the same for the other Sonics. Sonic 2 on the MD was a massive improvement and is a lot of fun, while Sonic 2 on the Master System always felt inferior to Sonic 1. Sonic 3 and Sonic & Knuckles then are just killer, still the best Sonic game to day, imo. Compared to that, Sonic Chaos feels just extremely mediocre, not just because of the absurdely low "difficulty". And the same indeed is true with Castle of Illusion. Something about the Mega Drive version just feels off. It looks great but it doesn't play that great and some levels just annoy me (like the spider level) while i really like the MS version. Otherwise, in straight up ports the Mega Drive usually wins (Golden Axe, Super Monaco GP or Bonanza Bros. come to my mind) whereas the Master System keeps up if the developers don't try to just make a "8-bit version" but rather develop something more fitting to the console. A good example is Batman Returns, a rather mediocre plattformer (with bad controls) on the Mega Drive, while the Master System game is actually pretty good.

I'm with many on here in that I prefer the Master System version - it's more balanced and coherent and is more attuned, it seems, to the capabilities of the console. Don't get me wrong, the Mega Drive version is so too, but only to an extent - I find it frustrating that for a game that was heavily promoted as the very pinnacle of 'blast processing', there is actually quite an emphasis on good 'ol platforming - there is such a difference between Green Hill Zone and Marble Zone, for instance.
I like Sonic 2 for SMS, but I feel the Mega Drive towers over this and gets the formula just right, and thus the imaginary winners medal. Having Tails on the cover, but not being able to play as him when you could on the Mega Drive version, left a sour taste in my mouth as a child...

Does anyone have any other examples? Shadow of the Beast maybe? Shadow of the Beast on the SMS is a better overall adventure and I really like the addition of a menu screen. It's just a pity about the glitchy levels (keys sometimes being stuck in walls for example) and the fact that it's an 'up-jumper' (the up button is jump, making platforming awkward). The Mega Drive version is almost as good as the Amiga version which was a game designed to show off the power of the Amiga - better graphics, atmospheric music and a superb story (read the manual, it's great). Regarding Sonic, I have to agree about the SMS version having better level design but it still seems like a watered down version to me.
