print on a4 double sided, cut the paper down with a proper paper cutter, not scissors.
when you design the pages, you will need to use print preview a LOT, so that everything is in the right order, a scale model by hand will help.
*for clarity i have never printed manuals, I have made a lot of promotional literature to accompany websites I have made and the principles are the same*

I haven't printed any manuals either, but I have printed a lot of zines and comics. I second flatapex's suggestion to make a little "model" booklet so you can see and understand how the pages should be laid out. Just take some sheets of blank paper, fold it in half like a booklet, and then number the pages. Then unfold and look at the pages and you'll see which pages go side-by-side on the same sheet. Take your time and double-check because sometimes it can be surprisingly confusing.
