Tecmo World Cup '93 by long a mile. I'd go as far to say as it's best the 8-bit football title ever. I would disagree, i think overall the best 8-Bit Football game is Konami Hyper Soccer on the NES, followed by the wacky Nekketsu (Nintendo World Cup) games, at least those are still a lot of fun in Multiplayer. Otherwise i think sports games just age very badly and there's rarely a reason to go back to past times to play them but if you have to play a football game on the Master System, stick to Sensible Soccer in my oppinion. It's the best of the bunch and at least somewhat resembles actual Football, unlike most of the other games (Great/World Soccer and World Cup Italia 90 are an insult to the sport)

football/soccer games need to be fun when played against another person, talk of ai etc is all but irrelevant as it is simply there for practicing how to kick your friend's backside across the room and hand it back to him on a plate. This is a good distinction. Would it change anyone's opinions if we differentiate between 1-player and 2-player?

For my two cents, I'd say that Sensible Soccer is the best version - seems to translate well everywhere, including the Game Boy.

I loved Italia '90 - the tournament, not the game. It's 8 a side on the SMS for crying out loud!! Even the Mega Drive version was terrible, a friend had it and we laughed at the keepers during penalties - you could dive before the kick was taken, leaving a mysterious hovering goalie! Honestly, I'm in the "sports games age really badly" category. I haven't played Sensible Soccer on the SMS but that's the only retro one that I still find playable (if incredibly easy) today. I'll have to give Tecmo a go though, that doesn't actually look too bad.

Another vote for sensible soccer. In my opinion it's not just the best for the system, but the best by a mile. Very playable in both 1 and 2 player.

So I tried Konami Hyper Soccer and it is, to be fair, a pretty good game. The graphics are nice but a bit flickery. The music is great. The gameplay runs smooth but just isn't as fast-paced and fun as Tecmo World Cup. Nintendo World Cup is pretty unplayable.

From playing these, I seem to remember the rare Brazilian FIFA was actually the most enjoyable when you consider everything together (sound, gameplay, graphics). Most SMS soccer games are pretty sad.

It isn't but it needs to be treated as a multiplayer game (i said that before, they aren't a lot of fun in single player). Against the CPU it's pretty weak, you can win every game by 20-40 goals...unless you have no clue about the Super Shot. But it really shines in multiplayer thanks to no rule and being able to take out players. The sequel is better since it adds a lot of wacky stuff on the playfield like rocks, water pits, meteors, lightning that hits your players (though i think that is already in Nintendo World Cup too) among other silly things. All those Nekketsu sports games are fun because they are so weird and unusual. The hockey game is a no holds barred brawl fest and the basketball game puts three baskets over another and features weapons, in my oppinion still way better than NBA Jam.

I'm going to have to go with Super Kick Off, for me it is closer to the original Amiga version and is good on the Sms too. I like Sensible but for me the Sms version is lacking compared to the Megadrive/Amiga versions. I have fond memories of playing World Soccer with my mates back in the late 80's too.
