That's an interesting point, Rastanfarian. Secret Command's artwork is bad in the sense of being technically inept. American Pro Football's art is bad in the sense that it seems like an insult! Perhaps it was intended to be an insult.. Speaking as an Englishman (but not on behalf of all Englishmen) i've grown up thinking American Football is a joke. The fact it's called 'Football' makes no sense to me. All the stoppages in play and the need for all added entertainment acts as the sport itself isnt enough to hold peoples attention (just my opinion). The over the top body armour looks comical as I was brought up watching Rugby with my Dad. So I can fully understand why the cover looks that way for a European audiance. I don't intend this post to cause offence, it's just my opinion. Edit - maybe not intended as an 'Insult', but certainly not looking on it as a serious sport.. Which could be insulting to some fans.

The fact it's called 'Football' makes no sense to me. That's why i call it American Handegg I don't think the cover was meant as an insult. Weren't most cover arts created in the USA? Would an american really insult the one sport they all follow like a religion? I think it was supposed to look funny and that's all there is to it. The same art style for example has been used in the manual for World Cup Italia '90 (Mega Drive version), similarly unfunny and make wonder why they are even there.

True, I don't really regard it as a serious kind of insult. More like kind of a joke... the way it's drawn definitely plays on the stereotype of athletes being dumb. It's definitely got a vibe of funny ridiculousness. On reflection, I think it's unfortunate that there doesn't really seem to be a place in the video games market these days for silly sports games, which at one time were quite abundant.
Rupert - I've tried to watch Rugby but don't really know the rules, so couldn't follow it. I think the pads and helmets in American football are warranted considering the speeds the players are moving at. From what I've seen of Rugby, people aren't full on sprinting at each other and colliding... Rugby is more like everybody hugs and slowly falls over and then occasionally the ball squirts out of the big muddy pile.
However I will agree, the name 'football' doesn't make that much sense for American football as there are only a couple of plays in which someone actually kicks the ball.

In the interest of not going off subject I am going to create a "football" thread in the off-topic section and respond to the recent discussion of football by Centrale, rupert, ShadowAngel, and myself there. If anyone cares please feel free to take a gander and reply if you feel the need!

You have just over a day left to put your votes in if you haven't already.
Can I get some opinions on the format of the final - I can just do a straight forward poll like the others or there is an option to hide the results, this means the winner will be a surprise at the end, rather than possibly a forgone conclusion on the first day of voting. The only negative I think would be if there was 2 or 3 games fighting it out then nobody would know.. Thoughts?

I prefer hidden votes in general because it stops tactical "my choice doesn't have any votes but my second choice could go through so I'll vote for that" voting.
Vote for your favourite and let's see who wins when the dust settles!

The only negative I think would be if there was 2 or 3 games fighting it out then nobody would know.. Thoughts? I would defiantly hide the results. If two or three games are fighting it out, voters are more likely to pick what they consider to be the best of those two or three. I prefer that we actually vote for what each individual actually believes is the best box art. Reading back through some members explanations for their choices, it is clear that some people have a difficult time separating "nostalgia" and "artistic value". Again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I don't mean to criticize anyone's choice but too often I believe the choice was made on something more then the box art itself. Just my two cents, I'm cool with whatever the masses decide. Or even what you decide yourself. You've put the hard work into this Tournament and if therefor you make that decision on your own you will not hear me complain.

Stage 2 voting has closed. The votes have been counted and the results are in!There were 202 votes placed in Stage 2, bringing the total voting on the tournament so far to 1371 votes! There are some great box arts in the final, is it what you expected before this tournament started? Have any box arts been overlooked or fallen short due to a tournament format being used? Equally have any got further than they should? Honourable mentions from Stage 1 (for receiving more votes than other games that progressed)Shadow Dancer: The Secret Of Shinobi (8 votes) Power Strike EU version (8votes) Gain Ground (10 votes) Ecco the Dolphin (9 votes) Sonic The Hedgehog Chaos (9 votes) Cosmic Spacehead (9 votes) Buggy Run (8 votes) Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six (8 votes) Honourable mentions for Stage 2 (for receiving more votes, or the same number of votes as games that got through to the final)The Cyber Shinobi (8 votes) Double Hawk (7 votes) Streets of Rage (7 votes) Speedball - Virgin Games (7 votes) Time Soldiers (7 votes) The final is a hidden result poll so the results will only be revealed once the poll locks on 26th Jan (An extra couple of days voting to fit around other commitments I have). The blind poll should Hopefully reduce any tactical voting and also keep the winner somewhat of a surprise Please go and cast your vote for your winner!

Cyber Shinobi, Shadow Dancer, Time Soldiers, and the Speedball covers also surprise me that they did make it further. Thanks again rupert for all the work you put into organizing this!

I think we both agree that Erik Larsen artwork on a Sega Master System cover = EPIC! Therefore Spiderman Sinister Six cover should have won!!!!!
