So my choice for the game club is Power Strike! This is one I never played as a kid but only recently a few years back when the high score club was alive and kicking (I'm currently in 3rd place so that's a great excuse for me to dust off my copy again). For those who haven't played in there's a pretty decent synopsis of what it's all about here - www.shmups.com/reviews/powerstrike/index.html For me it's definitely a tricky game with a strong difficulty curve but pretty fun and rewarding once you get the hang of things. And you can find the sega8bit high score club thread here - shinobiman.proboards.com/thread/7924?page=1Look forward to everyones thoughts on this gem for the master system! If posting this up today gets even one forum member discovering new game they love having not played it before then it's a win in my book! Power Strike was released in pretty much every region as far as I know so if anyone doesn't have a copy I think it's definitely one worth tracking down,

One of my favourite games of all time. I'll see if I can repair my MD arcade stick over the weekend and give this game some respect!
Literally just bought an xbone so I'll not exactly be focused.
This game is awesome though. Incredible graphics and music.

Thanks for picking a game ddevilfingersIt's a great choice too. Surprised it hasn't already been picked. This is one I also never played as a kid or even knew anything about. It's only really come to my attention in recent years. Which is a shame really because I think that it's such a good game that had it had better promotion, it could have been considered a real classic. I've been getting into shmups quite a lot recently and I can really appreciate how good this game is for an 8-bit system. The graphics, speed, music, controls, everything really, are excellent. My only criticism would be its difficulty. Even when I play it now it's rock solid, for a youngster it would be near impossible. Although I think its sequel Power Strike II is better, this is still an excellent game. Everyone should give it a go, I think they'd be mightily impressed by its technical accomplishment. I'll definitely have a go at getting a high score as I know I'll have plenty of fun in the process.

This game shows that the sms can produce a decent shump and I would say this is better than the megadrive version especially the music.
I got to level 3 on this and still come back to this time and time again.

For a long time I couldn't get past stage 3's opening waves. But next to arcade shmups, it's very easy. Whilst tough, it was still fun. Those tunes kept me coming back if nothing else!

Actually, despite what the website says, it's not a conversion. Aleste was first released on the Master System and got a MSX2 Port about half a year later. I guess the name got changed because Aleste might sound weird to people, i mean what is an "Aleste"? Whereas Power Strike sounds like your 80's "Yay, shoot 'em all!" title. And it's a spiritual sequel of Compile's Zanac which was released on the MSX and later ported to the NES (but curiously never to the Master System) Aleste is obviously a classic on the Master System and might be the best Shmup. I like the level design and the adjusting AI which was something pretty new for it's time but it's still rather challenging. Apparently even Compile thought that, the MSX2 Version that came out later featured a lower difficulty but also 2 more levels and cutscenes so it's the prefered version. But still, the MS Version is really good. I also like the music It's a shame that Aleste 2 never got released for the Master System,

I'd always assumed the SMS version came after because of the "reprogrammed by Sega" on the title screen. I think it's on the Japanese version too, so it isn't just changing the title to Power Strike.
Stage 1 from the MSX version looks like the bigger loss, as the other stage is quite short and has a dull slow scrolling background, with no boss. It's plenty long enough on the SMS though, the final two stages are pretty epic with all their "is this the real boss yet?" fights!

That's what I get for taking shortcuts Glad to see there's some discussion going - I've not played it for a few years but I'll give it another shot over the coming week! It's a great game, and very surprising it hadn't already been picked for game of the week!

I really need to get this game, I've got Power Strike 2, I'm guessing this is similar? (Which would be amazing as Power Strike 2 is one of my favourite SMS games!)

There are similarities - chiefly the little P chip power ups for your yellow cannon. Power Strike 2 fires both your weapons at once while the first has them mapped to a button each. In addition, all special weapons bar #1 have a time limit (resets when you pick up another power up).
Power Strike 2 is closer to Super Aleste on the SNES, whilst Power Strike is more like the earlier Zanac.

Flu and soldering is not a good combination so I haven't replaced the worn out microswitches on my MD arcade stick. So it's MD pad time (slightly more comfortable on the wrists than the SMS pad for holding down two buttons for 45 minutes this game) and a new high score over in the high score thread!
You know the little orange enemies that spam blue bullets from the far sides of the screen? Well if you don't lose a life, late in stage 4 they start coming across the screen barfing out orange bullets and... they sit at the bottom of the screen barfing upwards until you dispose of them. Or they dispose of you in the case of my high score run. Good thing this game gives you loads of extra lives!

Hi. I replayed Power Strike few days ago. And I have forgotten how hard it is !!! Ok, it's a good shoot em up, I like the colors, the design, and i think the "small" bosses at the middle of each levels are a good idea. But there are sprites, lasers, enemies EVERYWHERE. It's just insane ;-)
I finished the game (I admit with emulator and a lot of quicksaves/quickloads), but when I see the highscores, I don't know how is it possible to finish that game without cheat. Guys, you're really good !

Damn I must suck! I've made a renewed effort to play the game again since the game club seems to back up and running. I've owned this game for maybe 10 years and still cant get past the second round (not that I've played for at least 8/9 years). Is playing it in 50 hz mode significantly easier then the U.S. 60 hz? Sometimes I wonder if my O.E. control pads are junk... D-pad seems worn out maybe? Now I'm just making excuses for myself!

Power Strike is the perfect shooter on the SMS, I prefer it to the 2nd game which is far too fast. It's got some decent music and power ups and there's not too much slow down...
