Hey everyone! slightly odd question I know but just curious on how you would define a sports game as completed. For fun, over a long period of time, I plan on playing and completing every Master System game. I loved Ninjabearhug's SMS Quest videos (will they ever return?) and thought it would be fun to do myself.
Most games are self explanatory when it comes to completed! most games you play through until you reach the end credits. However, some games like Sonic The Hedgehog and Land Of Illusion have hidden Chaos Emeralds or power stars to find to give you a real ending of extra bonus points etc. With games like these, I will only count them as fully completed when I collect all the extras. With Asterix, I would play through as both characters as they have slightly different routes through the levels.
Now with sports games I don't know how to tackle them. For example, looking at the Super Kick Off Manual, it says there is a League and a Cup to play through involving 8 domestic teams and an International League and Cup to play through involving 8 international clubs. Would it be seen as the game being completed by picking one domestic team and one international team and playing all the way to the end and winning the leagues/cups? or would it only be complete by playing all 8 teams through to completion?
Just curious what you guys personally feel as completed when it comes to a game :-) nowadays some people consider modern games as completed when reaching the end credits, others only consider them completed when getting all the achievements/trophies.

I never thought about that, sports games are a bit tricky to count as finish (same with puzzle games, when do you have Columns finished for example?), though i guess even more today when sports games have tons of different game modes and things to do. I'd say if the game features Cups/Leagues, then play through them once and you have the game finished. It's a bit more difficult with games that only feature Player vs. CPU or Player vs. Player single matches. I guess you're finished after playing one match or if you're crazy, playing a match with every available team/athlete.

If there are leagues and cups, you need to win them all. If there are just CPU opponents, beat them all I guess. If there isn't some sort of a competition in a sports game, it sounds pretty depressing!

There are some difficult ones, transbot doesn't have an end for example.
When I won the cup on sensible soccer a while back there was a credit screen or something to say I had won, going for that is reasonable

Thanks for the replies guys! I will probably play as one team through leagues/cups etc with sports games.
What other games out there don't have endings? so far Transbot and Columns have been mentioned. I guess with Transbot I will class it beaten after completing both levels and defeating the AT-ST looking boss.
I just thought of Gauntlet! I believe that game has infinite levels and never ends?

You'll find Populous challenging, it can take hours per level and there's 32769 of them (then it loops). Plus you can't use passwords past level 5119... (a shame, because level 6912 is called SH ITHOLE) Ultimately you have to make a personal judgement on these. Do the credits mean you got to the end? Some games show them pretty easily when there's a lot left to play, some don't have any, some loop forever by design. Gauntlet loops levels past level 208. You might like to refer to www.gamefaqs.com/sms/916382-sega-master-system/faqs/61734 which covers games with and without endings, but is very spoiler-filled.

If there are leagues and cups, you need to win them all. That's a terrible advice, as if you want people to suffer Imagine having to play against all teams on Championship Hockey or World Cup Italia '90! Come on, one game is more than enough to be done with those What other games out there don't have endings? so far Transbot and Columns have been mentioned. - Astro Warrior has the same 3 level repeat and repeat with no proper ending. - Bank Panic i think has no ending. It becomes unplayable really quick and even if you use cheat device it has a bug at level 253 that can crash the game. - Montezuma's Revenge has no proper ending either, after Level 11 it just repeats. - Shanghai has no ending - My Hero has 3 levels looping with no ending

So tonight I have decided to play my first 2 or 3 (depending on how tired I get) games to completion in my attempt to eventually complete every SMS game and I'll start with the 3 games I got with my console for my Birthday (Ahh Nostalgia ) 1) Castle of Illusion (play to end credits and collect the 2 secret stars) 2) Sonic The Hedgehog (play to end credits and collect all chaos emeralds and play all bonus stages) 3) Michael Jackson's Moonwalker (play to end credits) Now I have completed Castle Of Illusion and Sonic before but...any excuse to play the classics again good openers for a quest I reckon. I can't honestly remember if I completed Moonwalker or not! I do remember the last boss being a right pain though shooting the turrets coming out the mountain or something like that.
