...used to cut the hang tabs off your Sega games as a kid?
I admit I was guilty of it growing up, but I have since learned the error of my ways.
I did it because I was a little kid and that's what I saw my dad do with his games. I'm guessing he did it to make it easier to stack them on a bookshelf. For those of you who did it, why?

I did with Psycho Fox which I'd brought for £35 from Toys R Us. It kept crashing at random so my parents drove me back a week after purchase to trade it for another but I'd cut the tab off the top. they refused to refund it.

As I was young, my mother had a boyfriend who was such a butthole.. he had cut off the tabs from all of my SMS games and I was angry but he did it and said ´at my home, they have to be cut´. I still hate that buttmunch.

Nope, I used to fold them down to make them fit. Never considered cutting them off! I bought a couple new that had the tab removed, notably Power Strike - purchased in Toys R Us so it was probably done so it fit easily in their stock room.

I never cut them off. They didn't bother me, for one thing. For another, it seems clear they're not really meant to be cut because of the way the edge of the case meets the hang tab - I'm not sure how to put it in words exactly, but there's just not really a straight line across there, it kind of indents down into the main part of the case slightly.

I've bought a few games where they have been cut off and I don't mind it, but personally I wouldn't cut them off - they've never bothered me at all, and I'd probably feel like defacing the game a bit if I cut them off, even if it is only the packaging. It's such a small thing though so it's not something that gets to me if it's not there. However, I've almost always kept all the original boxes and manuals for games that I've bought, be it console games or those big box PC/Amiga games. Other people have a more practical approach to this and are perfectly fine with throwing boxes and manuals out and keeping only the disc/cart and sometimes cover. That's fine if it works for them, but personally I dread seeing those CD/DVD wallets that some people have, with 200+ disc only PS games in them

I never did it as a kid, and still don't understand it today - as a collector it drives me nuts! At least most boxes can easily be swapped.

It never even occurred to me to cut the tags off, but at the same time it's never particularly bothered me when I've bought games with the tags cut. As long as the game works 100% and doesn't smell of cigarette smoke I'm happy.

I'm one of those really irritating people who need the tags kept on for collecting purposes.
Can't stand it when they're missing.

Yes I did. I do not cut them now, but I do not care if the case has them or not.

I didnt have an sms as a kid but I did have a mega drive.
Never cut the hang tabs off, some were a bit looser than others though, not sure if anyone else ever noticed that?
Gutted I sold my md and games about 1998 as I needed money for xmas presents for my family, everything was in really good condition (and I mean virtually like new)
These days I am less fussed about hang tabs, its nice if i have boxes with them for expensive games (mainly because if i ever need to sell them, the collectors will want them) but thats it, I see it as part of the history of the game and sort of what was done back then

Yep, I did it too all my boxes back in 89, now I look back and ask myslf Why? VHS videos were very ´IN´ at that time, and maybe the people had cut the tabs of because they look more like VHS cases then.

I'll admit it too...once upon a time, in order to "save" space I cut them off to fit them into the boxes they were being stored in. Should have just bent them over, but to lazy during the packing process.

Should have just bent them over, but to lazy during the packing process. Probably the reason why in the mid-90's (around 1994 it started i think), Sega suddenly began putting two small plastic teeth on the top of the case which held the tab when you bend it down. A neat idea that came way too late. I never cutted them off but i remember that quite a few stores (mostly department stores, not game stores) cut the tabs off before selling the game. Probably also to make them fit inside those glass casses.
