Hi again, everybody. I was able to get a C64 emu (VirtualC64) running recently and so have been checking out it's game library. I'm somewhat impressed with the variety of games available for it and that many of them seem unique to it; at least, I haven't seen many of them anywhere else. There were also some very good ports made for it as well as some not so good. I was also excited to find a working version of Sky Travel for it, a really neat little astronomy program that, unlike many similar programs of it's time that aren't usable after 1999, still works today and is pretty easy and intuitive to use. Anyway, since I just started exploring this system I'm nowhere near being able to offer up a top ten or anything. Still, I'm very interested to know what you think is cool for it. Certainly let me know what games you like for it but beyond that were there any interesting programs or applications (like Sky Travel) that you think are essential to the system or just worth checking out?

Remember getting a C-64 from my cousin in the early 90s with tapes filled with cracked games. I don't think I ever tried them all even though I did give it a good shot. Remember fondly the anticipation while loading each game not knowing what game would be next and if it would be good or not.
There are really too many games to mention, but I'll mention a few that come to mind.
Football Manager Commando Libya West Bank (Bank Panic on the SMS) Agent USA Auf Wiedersehen Monty (mostly for the music) Last Ninja 1-3 (again mostly for the music as the game is hard as hell) Bombjack Donald Duck's Playground Turrican International Karate Decathlon Bruce Lee Zorro Boulder Dash Airborne Ranger Great Giana Sisters

The go-to emulator for the C64 is VICE (also emulates PET, VIC-20, Plus 4 and C128). These are some of the games I recommend:
Impossible Mission Mayhem in Monsterland Creatures 1 and 2 Great Giana Sisters Armalyte Zynaps Ghostbusters (the original version and IMO the one that best re-creates the intensity of the film) Retrograde Nobby the Aardvaark Prince of Persia Berzerk Redux River Raid (great port of the 2600 classic) Aliens (UK and US versions) Paradroid Chuckie Egg Buggy Boy Blood Money

Raid Over Moscow! If you work out how to get your planes out of the hanger, it's amazing fun - it has a few different stage types but mainly it's a Zaxxon style scrolling shooter with some over the shoulder fixed screen stages.
I had a Spectrum so don't know of this one got a C64 release or is compatible, but Night Gunner is an excellent game - WW2 bomber game that mixes fixed screen shooting gallery with SMS G-LOC style ground attack runs and overhead bombing.

Thanks for the recommendations, everyone! Some I've checked out already but many I haven't yet. Regarding my choice of emu let me first say that I'm on a mac. I think I tried installing Vice awhile back and either couldn't get it working or just found it too complex for some reason. VirtualC64 is the first C64 emu I've used that seemed relatively quick and easy to get up and running and figure out. I have tried a few others because I've wanted to checkout the games for it for some time now but, like I said, this is the first time I've been successful. The other thing that bugs me is that for some games where the F3 key is needed this emu doesn't always recognize it, which is why I can't open that damn hanger door, Transatlantic Foe. Fortunately, I also have a copy of ROM for my Apple IIc but I really would've liked to have got it going in the C64 emu too. Speaking of Zaxxon, I think the C64 has the hands down best port of it that I've seen. It's really decent compared to the others and even Super Zaxxon (which even the arcade version isn't that good because it plays too fast) is slowed down and pretty good here. Well, I'm off to download a bunch of your recommendations to checkout latter, Thanks again for the suggestions!

Thanks for the suggestions, evil Batman and EV! I've thought about getting an actual C64 but for now I think I'm going to stick with emulation. Cool method for loading tape programs though! I just took another look at Vice again and after several attempts I couldn't get one game running; whereas VirtualC64 was pretty easy and intuitive for me to figure out and I got it going right away. Though I still haven't figured out how to swap disks yet for multi-disk programs Any help here would be greatly appreciated. I can see why people here prefer Vice though because it seems to have a lot more options and features (light pen emulation?) than VirtualC64. For any mac users here I suggest installing it and comparing the two for yourself and then let me know which you think is better.

Just updating this because I figured out how to swap disks using this program. You simply drag and drop the next disk image into the program window. I was trying to double click the image at first. Thanks again for all your suggestions everyone!
