Who else used to buy the computer mags and drool over the game screen shots from the neo geo?
Ive just been watching you tube videos of this console and it was an amazing piece of kit. Its such a pity the games and console were out of the reach of most people, anyone own one of these now or then?

I've had a few over the years, been thinking of picking up a Neo Geo X lately if I can get it cheap enough.

Not on the X as it has a lot of controller lag with the arcade stick which they've never fixed. If you are willing to pay out for an X you are better off going for original hardware, so much better. The carts are like breaks and a real joy to collect.

I used to drool over the images. They looked fantastic! I wish I had one back then and even now.

Don't bother with the X, it's just an emulator box with plenty of issues. Either emulate on a PC or get the real hardware.

They were insanely priced. The system was around $700 US. (If I recall correctly) with the games around $100 or so.(Once again if memory serves me well).

I wonder why? They could of gone for the higher end market but still at an affordable price. Just imagine if they had..

I wonder why? They could of gone for the higher end market but still at an affordable price. Just imagine if they had.. SNK never planned for the Neo Geo being released to the public. It started out as an Arcade hardware and then SNK released the consolized version to Hotels and other such venues on a rent basis. People in japan went crazy about it, flooding SNK with mails asking where it is available. Once SNK saw that a ton of people were willing to shell out an insane amount of money, they released the AES to the public. It was even more expensive everywhere else because SNK initally didn't even care about other countries than japan for this system. Other companies licensed the console and then sold it which again had an impact on the price. Also the console just was very expensive. While it used the same CPU Setup as the Mega Drive (68000 & Zilog Z80) it uses a different more expensive version. The Mega Drive uses a Motorola 68000 clocked at 7,6 Mhz whereas the Neo Geo uses a version with 12 Mhz. Is has more video ram and in general uses D-Ram whereas the Mega Drive relies mostly on cheaper PSRAm. The Graphic Chip was lightyears ahead too: 16 Bit Color Depth with 4096 colors on screen at the same time, higher sprit size, more sprites at the same time, more backgrounds, layers, all that. The SNES has 15 Bit capability (32768 Colors but can only display 256 Colors at the same time. Also the games were larger. Most Mega Drive games between 128 Kilobytes to 4 Megabytes (the 32 Megabits Cartridges) the most. Neo Geo as time went by went up to 716 Megabits (King of Fighters 2003 with 89,5 Megabytes which even outclasses the biggest Nintendo 64 Cartridge which is Resident Evil 2 with 512 Megabits, 64 Megabytes) Same goes for the sound with the Yamaha YM2610 providing 15 channels and 2 KB Ram. It was expensive because the hardware was expensive and years ahead, despite featuring only 2D Graphics. There's a reason why the Playstation or even the Sega Dreamcast struggled to get games like King of Fighters or Garou: Mark of the Wolves running (The DC version of Garou is abysmal and it was already scaled down but it still has input and audio lag up to 2 seconds SNK knew perfectly well that the Neo Geo console wouldn't sell a lot, that it would be limited to a couple hardcore gamers which is the reason why they never had a problem releasing their games to other consoles, they never saw Nintendo or Sega as competitors because they weren't in the mainstream console business and knew they would make more money if they release Art of Fighting to the Mega Drive and SNES than selling Neo Geo cartridges to the few people who could afford the system. I remember in the early 90's some shops advertised the Neo Geo in gaming magazines, it was usually 1000 DM (today's equivalent would be 792€) for the console and a game. In the late 90's when SNK was in financial struggles games become scarce and import only, i remember reading magazines that games like King of Fighters 2000 where sold for 600 DM (around 395€ today) Today, the best way is to go for a consolized MVS and hunt down the arcade boards, while that has been a known thing in retro-gaming for a couple years, the games as jamma boards are still cheaper than their cartridge AES equivalents.

You might be right, but as I recall in the US the games were initially more in the $200-300 range. Also, in the US, the advertisements for the Neo Geo were very aggressively competitive with the Genesis and TurboGrafx.

It's pretty crazy, huh? It's funny how the NES has been relegated to a tiny bar in each graph without even bothering to include a numerical value.
What they really should have done was just have large screenshots of the games. Anyone could see at a glance that those graphics were astounding, and largely impossible on the other systems.
