What year did you get your first SMS? Mine was Christmas day 1987. Held on to it and played through 1998 until I fried it. Plugged in wrong AC adapter and "pop". Kept all my games stored away for years. One day the mood struck me and via eBay came another SMS in 2011.

Same day for me, Christmas 1987! I got the Master System with Hang-On/Safari Hunt, as well as The Ninja and Ghostbusters. And two great kittens! Pretty tough to beat that Christmas for sheer excitement.

The first SMS I bought was from a Cash Converters on 5th August 1997 (my 16th birthday). It cost £15 and was the standard SMS2 model with Alex Kidd built in.

1989, don't know for sure when during the year. Probably late '89. My father picked the console for me and as he didn't know it included a game he bought one that interested him which was Kenseiden, that game was insanely awesome for 6 year old me that had just experienced Mario at a glance before.
25 years later the same console is still going strong and is connected to my TV, though with the exception of the AC adapter that I had to replace a couple of years ago.

Pretty tough to beat that Christmas for sheer excitement. Yes, Hang On/Safari Hunt included, also got Choplifter, My Hero, F-16 Fighting Falcon. My dad was cheep always trying to buy the card games! A day or two after Christmas went out to Toys R us to spend the Christmas money I received from grandparents. Had my heart set on Wonderboy but it was sold out. Came home with Ghostbusters and Great Football. Never actually got Wonderboy until 20 years later.

I got mine around 89 I think. My mom absolutely refused to buy me an NES for some reason but actually went out herself and got me an SMS for Christmas one year. At the time, I was mildly disappointed cause everyone I knew had an NES but a few days later, I realized I had the better system. All my gaming stuff went into the trash, sadly, in 92 when I joined the Navy and my mom thought it would make me give up gaming. Still havent replaced my premier issue of Sega Newsletter either. I got another SMS 3-4 years ago and dont regret it for a minute!

Most you guys got your Master Systems before I was born, so I'm a little late to the party. I spent many years desiring an SMS before I finally got one off of a Craigslist deal in 2012, and it quickly became one of my favorite systems.

I'm making an educated guess here but I think mine was my 9th birthday - November 1989. I went through the database and none of the games I had were released later than 1989. It was the the version with Hang On and Safari Hunt on the front of the box!
Only had about a dozen games at most throughout the time I had it -
Psycho Fox Ghostbusters Wonderboy Wonderboy III AKHTW Golden Axe Cloud Master Altered Beast Fantasy Zone Teddy Boy Double Dragon Shinobi
Actually a really great selection in hindsight.

I got another SMS 3-4 years ago and dont regret it for a minute! You probably got it in 1988, since you got the first issue of Sega Challenge mailed to your house. That issue is dated Winter 1988. As far I know, the only way to get it was to send in the card that came with certain games. Afterburner was known to include the card. Not sure which game came with the card I sent away, but as it stands we are one of a very small group of people to have gotten that issue when it was available. Hope you can one day get again. It took me YEARS.

I got my SMS in April, 1987. It's interesting, because Christmas of 1986 I got an Atari 7800. Two weeks later, I took it back and my mom got me a NES with the return money. I loved my NES until one day in Macy's I saw a Sega display. Choplifter was playing and I was like O-M-G. The graphics were far superior than anything I had seen on my Nintendo, so I convinced my mom to again take a system back (I guess they had a 90-day return policy). With the money, this then-spoiled 8th grader got the Master System. Still have it and love it to this day. A footnote: A couple of months later I got the NES again (probably around June or July 1987). From that day on I just had to have every system.
