 Sega8bit 08 Summary (with pics).
« Thread Started on Jul 8, 2008, 7:41pm »

Sega8bit 08 - Sunday 6/07/08.

I arrived at the event at 12:30 ish to find Aypok and Peter (Aypoks mate) setting up an SMS, I recognised him from his forum picture so we didnt have an embarrassing 'who are you' incident. I set to work setting up the couple of SMS's I had brought with abit of technical assistance from Gareth (profpeach/ pub guy) as I couldn’t find the scart channel using the remote. I had also brought with me a paddle controller and western carts of Woody Pop and Alex kidd BMX Trial, reproductions by the way. (RetroReserve nearly had an aneurism when he spotted the Woody Pop cartridge ;) ).

My 1st of 5 pints was ordered at this point, I’m not the shy-ist person but It's actually pretty nerve racking meeting people who you feel you sort of know but have never actually met before, a strange feeling.

Retroreserve arrived soon after whom I also recognised from his picture. Mr Reserve then left to go and check into his hotel. Now my memory is pretty sketchy on this but I don’t think anyone else showed up till way after 1:00.. I started to get a little worried as I thought perhaps nobody was going to show up :-/

My worries were soon dispelled as Phil walked through the door, I have never seen a picture of Phil but straight away.. "I'm Phil". After this point I can’t really remember the order of arrivals.

I knuckled down to abit of Putt and Putter practice, I think (maybe wrong) Aypok was giving Peter a run through of some of the games in the comp.

I think Ian arrived next (?) and thank god he brought his laptop with all the details of the game comp as I hadn’t brought anything to organise it with :-[ He also brought a whole stack of cartridges and his Pimped 'Fantasy Zone' SMS (which actually looks much better in real life :) )

Then it was Maxim, I was pleased Maxim made it as he isn’t a regular sega8bit poster but I had spoken to him quite allot over on SMSPower :) + correct me if I'm wrong.. He had the furthest to travel, all the way from London. He brought with him a wii with SMS emulation which I found to be much better than I thought it would be.

Kiff and Ninjabearhug arrived and I didn’t recognise either of them! At first I thought they had just come in the pub for a drink and popped through to see what we were up to, then Ninja introduced himself.. looked nothing like his picture! So then I assumed Kiff was Ninja's friend whom he was supposed to be bringing, oops.. sorry kiff. I realised soon after when you were speaking with Playgen.. who I also didn’t recognise! lol. Also thanks to Kiff for bringing a box full of free SMS goodies for people to take away, that was a great idea and I wish i had done the same.

Playgen was last to arrive as he had a spot of car trouble on the way down (was it 2:30 you arrived?). I’ve spoken to playgen quite allot over MSN so I was really glad he made it over to the event.

I just want to add at this point that I found everyone to be great to speak to, it seemed like a real mix of people (even though we were all of similar age, male and white) but from what I could see everyone appeared to be really getting on well together. For me that was really what matters about this kind of thing, not really the gaming at all.

The gaming comp lasted most of the day and we didn’t in fact manage to finish it! Ian did a really great job of sorting out who was playing who and the scores. It was a shame it went on for so long as people understandably had to start leaving from about 7:00 or 8:00 onwards for their trains etc.. This will be a lesson learnt for the next event. less games and less rounds. Having said that I had a great time playing against everyone (devastated that Phil beat me on my first round of Putt and Putter! >:( ;) )

Ian won pretty much every round with just Maxim and RetroReserve winning one round each. I really thought I would win at least one round, but I was up against some pretty seasoned SMS professionals ;) (I will post up the full results when I’ve spoken to Ian again.)

I would have liked to have stayed later into the evening and had a drink with the people who didn’t need to catch trains etc, I felt kinda bad leaving Ian and RetroReserve as they were staying over in Manchester and I was the local person who could have shown them around :-/ sorry guys. Hopefully I will be able to get a hotel for Sega8bit 09 wherever that is held. I can only see the sega8bit events getting bigger and better after this great 1st year.

Now for the pictures, I am totally responsible for the lack of photos, I feel like I have let people down with this and it's almost criminal we didn’t have a group photo!. (I have photoshopped a few of these just to get rid of any bad red eye and shine etc).

As above but you can now actually see Aypok and Maxim (both sporting excellent t-shirts that I want!)

From left to right Phil, RetroReserve, Ninjabearhug and Ian all deep into intense SMS action!

Me, looking really strange, I don’t even think this looks like me (?) thanks Aypok ;)

and the Winner is... Ian proudly lifts the sega8bit 08 trophy (which he actually bought anyway, hmm.)

I really hope we can do this again next year and hopefully more people can attend and we can really make this into a great retro gaming event. Thanks again to all those who came, Ian for sorting the comp and ProfPeach for letting us use his pub and the TV's.

That's a great account of the event - nice write-up.

I'm just glad you didn't mention my embarrassing speed run on Alex Kidd In Miracle World. Oh, wait... :)

This looked really awesome! And I love your account of the day! :) Makes me even more anoyed that I had to miss it! Why couldn't the stupid stupid university have waited another week before interviewing me!!! >:(

Would you like to go back to the same place for a future event? Or somewhere different?

Are any of the other site admin planning on turning this into a feature on the main site? If not I have some free time tomorrow I can try to get it done in.

I really wish some programmer somewhere would realise there is still a small market for the Master system out there - how many of us would pay even £50 for a brand new game that came out twice a year?? I know I would! Online petition anybody?? :)

I am still floating around mate :)

I don't post as much anymore because I totally changed my collection views a while back now. Sold up all my sms stuff (and gave all the remaining bits and pieces away on Sunday), now I am mainly playing arpund with Gamecube dev stuff. I shall make more of an effort to be around from now on though.

I am definately in the first picture (thats me in the grey t-shirt over play gen's shoulder) but you are right that I am not playing.

It was a great day all in all, a very good group of different people turned up. It felt kinda awkward at first (the 'is that who I think i is' stage) but as soon as the games started rolling people were talking more freely. I really think we should organise another one for whenever people can make it. I don't suppose it has to be an annual thing, could be more frequent.

Great pictures and great write-up...sounds like you guys had a blast. Too bad you didn't have it two months earlier, as I could have totally been there. No worries though, maybe Prophet and I need to organize a North American variant. ;D

I liked the place and would happily go back; the food was great, the staff very friendly, easy to get to (for me), the other people there seemed fine (not the kind of riff-raff you get in some places - one group of people were sitting around playing a board game, which I thought was great!). Oh, and it has free-play table-top arcade machines, which were cool :).

The only problem is that it might be a little too small if we get more people next time. There was enough room to house all of us that attended, but moving around was occassionally a little tricky.

EDIT: As for photos of Kiff: I'm sure one of my photos shows him standing around. I'll check when I get home.

It was a great day, so glad we did it, well done again Rupert and Ian for organizing it. I was aiming to get there at 12 myself, left the house at 7.30 which I thought would give me plenty of time. I got there a bit after 2 I believe, after breaking down on the motorway for about an hour, then getting stuck in traffic during which a few leaps out of the car to coax the radiator fan into action were required, then predictably getting lost in Manchester for a while too.

The pub is really nice, a great choice of venue. I didn't make the most of it though, totally forgot to try the arcade cabs out, and didn't order any food, for some reason I wasn't hungry at all, perhaps from excitement or maybe because of the vast quantities of sugar filled coke consumed.

It was so good to finally meet people I've known on here and spoken to on MSN for years. I recognized Rupert and Retroreserve straight away, but everyone else either looked a bit different from photos that have been shown on here, or I had no idea what they looked like at all. It was quite overwhelming meeting so many at once, but of course everyone is really nice, there must be something about the Master System that attracts the most friendly and intelligent people :)

It was a rare treat to be able to play SMS games with other people, if only my gaming skills were better! I can't believe I didn't even finish the first level of Miracle World, let along score the best time. I can zip through it perfectly normally, I blame the pressure of being the first person to play kicking off the competition!

The day was over all too soon, its definitely an event that needs to be repeated. Personally I don't want to wait a whole year either. As nice as the pub was, perhaps next time we could meet up at someone house or something, and perhaps even make a weekend of it.

What about the idea of making it a weekend next year?

Start Sat afternoon, stay over night and play again Sunday.

Would be good fun to go out for a few beers after a days gaming and it would mean a lot more gaming time

Not really, I just thought it would be funny to name the cup in honour of our resident crazy russian who couldn't be there with us ;D
