Phil the pill is up from the mill. Hmmmmmm, well time to unearth that old line from my youth, he's drunk as rubber duck and ready to kill at the wheel or something with an ill rhyme of some sort placed into dactylic meter with four foot iambs. Give to us straight, my man.

Sorry everyone for the delay but I'm finally here with my choice for GOTW and the lucky game I've chosen is.......................
STREETS OF RAGE II,
I can hear the sniggers from here but why? Streets of Rage 2 in my opinion is a pretty decent side scrolling beat'em up, superior to the likes of Renegade, Double Dragon et al.
The wrong thing to do is compare it to the glorious, wonderful and down right brilliant original. Yes the graphics and gameplay hold nothing to the first outing, but so what, SOR 2 is still heaps of fun to play.
Ok let's set the scene, since Axel, Blaze and Adam defeated Mr X and crushed the crime syndicate, all has been peaceful in the city. But a year on, Adam is suddenly kidnapped and it's up to his younger brother Skate along with Axel and Blaze to once again go head to head with the syndicate and save their friend.
Now before you get too excited, you and a buddy can't tackle the streets together, like the original you must brave it alone. Seeing as I don't have any friends that suits me fine, but if you do have friends, well one will just have to watch you kick the sh*t out of the bad guys.
When I played the game for the first I was slightly disappointed by the graphics, although the backgrounds are quite detailed, the actual sprites are pretty small and not very well defined. My ear drums were pleased to hear however the familiar music which made the original game so special, yes Yuzo Koshiro makes a welcome return churning out some more heart pumping tunes.
SOR 2 offers quite a range of nifty moves with each player having a number of special ones such as the body slam and back drop. Some are tricker than others to master, but like in the first game I found the standard jump kick the most effective one to use. Not only that, but you have the likes of lead pipes and knifes at your disposel. Other helpful items such as extra lives and energy can be found by breaking tables and barrels. Yes it's all familiar stuff.
As for the actual gameplay one thing that you'll find annoying is that sooner or later you'll find yourself trapped in a corner contineously getting knocked to the floor. With better play-testing this could have been avoided but hey no games perfect! As with most fighting games you'll end up saying, well I'll just play until the end of the level and an hour later you're still at it! It's pretty repetitive stuff, but with the great music, range of locations and bosses on offer the game is a challenge to complete even on easy setting. Yes I must confess I've only ever completed the game with a PAR cart! I found myself using life after life just trying to defeat a couple of enemies especialy those women with the whips.
In conclusion if you liked the original, this offers more of the same, maybe not as well executed but still a fun and challenging game, recommended.

Well I don't own the original so I have nothing to compare this to.. Maybe that's a good thing.
I am an old school Double Dragon gal, so found this game a little disappointing with no 2 player option. Phil is "on" about the music and colour/graphics so that's all OK too. Maybe my dislike for this game is the old chestnut, " I am crap at it". There, I said it. I dont have the manual, so I might be missing some key attack information, but I think my mashing of the buttons just doesn't cut it here.
Still, if I can find the time this week I'll take the old girl out for a burl..

You know, I didn't play this through the last time I popped it in, but I didn't think it was that bad. Hope I can find some time to slam it this week!

I don't like Streets of Rage on the Master System. Its not a bad game, but the single-player mode is not a lot of fun, those games are a lot more fun when you play them with a friend. So i prefer the mega drive version over this one

I like the game, the only problem is that the game is a thousand times inferior to the Genesis version and also inferior to SOR in the SMS, witch is a pitty considering both games were released in the same year. Nevertheless, the game is fun to play and is always a pleasure to hear a yuzo koshiro soundtrack on the SMS!!

The Gamegear Version is much better. SMS Version plays very unfair and difficult.

I've never played the Streets Of Rage games on the GG, I always thought they would be the same as the sms versions.

I think you could say most SMS games were inferior to the MD counterpart in terms of graphics and sound. For the SMS being such a limited system this is a pretty decent attempt at producing a solid beat 'em up. The 2nd best scrolling fighting game on the sms, which shouldn't be compared to the MD version, but judged on its own merits.
People keep picking CACK platform games for GOTW and I try to pick something, a little less obvious and I get a very luke warm reception. I'm sure some fool will pick Vigilante, Kung Fu Kid, Black Belt, Renegade or Double Dragon sometime in the future...........You have my pity......

Well Phil I have the game on my Tototek and I liked it I often play it but some of the levels are longer than the 16bit version.
If this had a two player game it would be way better than double dragon.
There are plenty of moves and a lenghty game involed, I have completed it and still return for more.

Merçi Phil. Très bonne critique. SOR2 est décevant, difficile (parfois on peut plus bouger comme tu dis) et possède des graphismes assez terne. Je lui préfére de loin le 1er.
