It's the end of the year (almost) and the end of this cycle of the GotW, and to provide the last selection it's the turn of Retrobob. Since the festive season may interfere with SMS gaming time, we'll let this one run until next year, and can start over again in January.
Over to you, Bob!

Castle of Illusion Starring Mickey Mouse An early Mickey Mouse game on the Sega Consoles, that (again) follows the old resuce the princess formula - this time from an evil witch. A considerably different game following the same formula was released on the MegaDrive/Genesis, this was the harder and frankly better version. Everything about this game is memorable, the intro, graphics, music and most of all the gamplay which will bring you back time and again. Most importantly, the gameplay is fun, the levels are varied, offering a challenges as you progress. For those of you who don't own the game, find it here... www.romnation.net/srv/roms/segamastersystem/m.htmlI first got this game for Christmas around it's release in the UK having read a review or two. I instantly loved it and don't actually ever remember finishing it, something I hope to rectify this week...

Great game, just beat this one the other day in my quest to run through the Illusion trilogy of doom. I have the awesomeness of the NTSC version, but I don't think there are any differences at all. The graphics and sound are simply splendid, well done all around. I had no problems with them at all. The controls were easy to get accustomed too and proved to be not bothersome in any way. The game itself is just a bit too easy for me. It only took me about 30 minutes to get through it. I found the hardest boss, in fact, to be the first one. Well, it's the first one if you choose the first door, otherwise it could be the second or third boss. At any rate, it's the twirling tree boss, and he's a spiderpig with large eyes. All of the other bosses are pretty much simple. The final boss is a bit hard to get used to at first, but doesn't take too much time to defeat. Still, aside from its lack of any real difficulty, it isn't exactly easy and it's definitely a lot of fun. This is the one that really shows off what the SMS can do in many different ways. Get it now.

Excellent choice retrobob, n.º 13 in my SMS list. I really love this game, the graphics are excellent, the music superb and the gameplay is flawless, it´s the kind of game that makes us wonder why the SMS didn´t had a more sucessfull run!?!

Capital K choice! This game rocks. Must have hired it out about 50 times back in 1992... Finally finished it when I finally got a copy of my own about 4 years ago. If all platformers were this good, the SMS may not have slid off the radar as early as it did.
Hard enough to want to play again without it being a walkthru but also easy enough to not get discouraged. One of the all time greats. I hate those friggin toy clowns though.... grr!!

Pretty cool game, this is one I hadn't played until this year when I picked it up with a bunch of other games, including Land of illusion.
I thought both would be crappy licensed games that were just jump, jump, boss, next level... Man was I wrong these games were damn awesome, with vibrant graphics pleasant music and gameplay that was actually quite suprising, though a bit on the easy side, though the low difficulty was expected considering these were kids games.
I liked Land of Illusion better than Castle in the end, but I was defintely satisfied with both games.

This could be the only time when the SMS version is better than the Megadrive version. In my opinion anyway, the levels are just set out better and seems more fun to play.

Castle of Illusion is awesome, one of the best games for the master system and i like it more than Land of Illusion. CoI may be a bit to easy and short, but the gameplay, level design and the graphics are near to perfect and i prefer a short but great game rather than a long and boring game.

Iam quite dissappointed, I had such high hopes on this game after LoI. I dont like the robocod door style between the levels, it doesnt feel like a complete story, but just some seperate levels. What also sucks is that there aint no powerups, like wall climbing and getting small. Its a decent game, but not superb.

C.O.I is awesome - great graphics and unlike a lot of sms platform games this is a lot of fun. For 1990 it's a remarkable feat on the system and was the standard for future sms games. If you want to become small and climb walls and stuff - try Land of Illusion. But for me the original could never be beaten.

Of course they throw in a bunch of new features. And the doorstyle makes sense. You're in a CASTLE running from Room to Room trying to find Minnie. How else should they do it? They could've gone with the old "One level after another in a straight line"-way, but wouldn't that boring? I like the chance to choose how i play the levels.

This game is awesome. Not just the gameplay, graphics, music, contols and general feel, but the quirks, secret treasure, secret blocks, throwing blocks and secret passageways are just incredible. I still remember it blowing me away as a kid and having to decide whether to try and get away with pausing it overnight after I finally reached the end battle with Mizrabel at about 11pm on a school night. Seriously wonderful game. I can also remember my Amiga playing friend ripping the piss out of me for having such a gay game. He didn't know the half of it. He got plenty back when commodore went bankrupt.
